Cordero di Montezemolo 1982 Barolo Monfalletto
Old Cordero Barolo is great wine (recent vintages are in a fairly heavy, oaky style that we don't love so much, but the old stuff...). A couple of years ago we had several cases of this wine, which afforded multiple tasting opportunities; at this price the wine is a steal.
Rinaldi, Francesco 1982 Barolo Cannubio
Tasted 4-5 times recent years, this is still young, but beginning to show some lovely old-wine truffley/forest notes, along with more delicate rose and strawberry aromas. There's plenty of material balancing ripe tannin, and a long long finish. I love this wine, and I think it's a great buy for this level of quality. JW
López de Heredia 2001 Rioja Tondonia Reserva
75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha, and 10% Graciano and Mazuelo, aged 6 years in barrel and 4 years in bottle. Rich aromas of wild cherry, rose oil, black raspberries, and toasty baking spice, with a full, silky, structured palate of cherry skins, tart cranberry, plump ripe strawberries, wild nettles, sweet tobacco, black tea, orange rind, and warm, woodsy earth. Generous and satisfying in its present youthful stage and an exciting candidate for long-term cellaring. AR
