Mongioia 2016 Moscato d'Asti Crivella
Crivella is made with fruit from Riccardo Bianco’s oldest vines, including some planted in the mid 1800s by Riccardo’s great-great-something grandfather; such old vines are extremely rare, and while they produce very little fruit, it’s impossible for Riccardo to even think about replacing them. At a tasting in the shop a customer said, “Like Sauternes with bubbles!” which was a lovely way to describe the wine and its rich and unctuous character. made lively with fizz, and crisp with balancing acidity. A great match with cheese or not-so-sweet desserts, like panetone, or fruit pies. While there’s no botrytis, Crivella is much more complex and detailed than all but the very best Sauternes. I’ve certainly never tasted anything like it — a stunning wine. Jamie Wolff

The 2010 Château Bellegrave is something serious. Not an outright meaty wine, it's savory in more of an alluring, herbaceous, mint-and-tobacco way. An hour open reveals a nose of red fruit, flavors of dark minerals and plum, and a bracing structure of lean edges and good acidity. The crucial stuffing, the attractive, semi-plump middle, forms after three hours or so of air. At this point, the wine's aromas and flavors have expanded, too. Dashes of extra-dark cocoa and dried cherries hum under more pungent and lasting aromas of black pepper, leather and smoke. A subtle, bitter kiss of ground espresso and an even subtler peck of mint give pleasurable nuance to a palate of dates, plum, and red currants. No cellaring needed, drink this today - just open it at 5 if your meal begins at 8. David Hatzopoulos
A great Bordeaux from a great vintage, here's Neal Martin's 2019 review in "Vinous" - "The 1990 Pichon-Baron is a sensational wine that must have had the First Growth rattled when it was released. At 28 years old, it is still reveling in its precocious growing season. The multidimensional bouquet features blackberry, graphite, cedar and mint flanked by iodine and warm gravel on a summer day. Wow! The palate is medium-bodied, delivering a mixture of red and black fruit, a fine mineral undercurrent and a long, precise finish: blackberry, cedar and graphite remain in the mouth for a good 60 seconds. Still a fabulous Pauillac after all these years."
Fornacina 2015 Brunello di Montalcino
I've tried to resist the temptation of a potential cliché, but: this made me think of Burgundy, because this is a really elegant Brunello with no sign of heat, beautiful balance – it’s intense, but not at all too rich, with good lift, and a clear sense of place. I’ve tasted Fornacina for about 10 years now, and terroir emerges in the wine; the relatively high altitude (400+ meters), and the high PH of the galestro soil, must play a role in how fresh the wine is, even in a hot vintage like 2015. The wine is very fragrant with “frutti di bosco”, or forest fruits (wild strawberry, blackberry, etc), clay and “sotto bosco”, or forest floor – leafy and earthy. After 4+ hours open, it’s showing even better: a very refined wine, aromatic, dynamic, and delicious. Jamie Wolff
Boggione, Claudio 2016 Barolo Brunate
The 2016 Brunate is super-aromatic, hitting Nebbiolo’s typical indicators of bright cherry fruit, rose, rich earth/clay/limestone, some balsalm and minty notes; the wine develops even more complexity with air. To me it sings Brunate – that is, a wine with evident power and a serious nature, but also austerely elegant, and balanced between power and finesse without any strain or obvious effort. This is a classic wine that will repay some years in the cellar, but on day 1 it was very good, on day 2 excellent, and on the third day quite spectacular. This may not be the most practical schedule for home drinking, but pouring into a decanter or pitcher in the morning will yield a similar result by dinner time!I can’t resist pointing out that for a Barolo Brunate of this quality the price is very reasonable. But you can do even better: take a 10% discount for any 12 bottles of wine from our inventory, AND – for 24 hours only – we are offering a 15% discount for a 12 bottle case of Boggione. Jamie Wolff
Barbichon NV base 17 Champagne Brut Blanc de Noirs
From year to year there seem to be few greater values in Champagne than those of biodynamic grower Thomas Barbichon in Gyé-sur-Seine in the Aube. From his 9 HA domaine he produces wines of purity, elegance, and precision. The current disgorgement of his Blanc de Noirs is Pinot Noir-dominant. The 2017-base Barbichon Blanc de Noirs is comprised of 93% Pinot Noir and 7% Pinot Meunier. The farming is Demeter certified. The robe has a faint peach hue. The nose is attractively floral and red-fruited with aromas of wild strawberry, sour cherry, and crushed herbs. The palate is bright and vibrant with flavors of orange oil, a fine line of minerality, with a soft mousse and fine bead. The finish is expansive and tangy with a hint of biscuit on the back end. Lovely Champagne and an excellent value. John McIlwain
Laherte Frères NV Champagne Chavot Extra Brut Rosé de Meunier
Aurélien Laherte decided to retool his previous Brut Rosé Ultradition Champagne and focus on one exclusively made from Pinot Meunier. This Champagne combines 60% immediately pressed Meunier blended with 30% macerated Meunier and 10% still red Meunier (most rosé Champagnes only opt for one of these methods of production). This wine has a deep salmon robe with delicate flavors of wild cherry, salty plum, dried tarragon, and a sharp streak of chalky minerality. A Champagne with both finesse and structure, you can serve this as an aperitif or pair this with lighter meats or a rare filet mignon!
Filaine (Fabrice Gass) NV Damery Cuvée Speciale Base 18
The tiny Champagne Filaine is one of our favorite Champagne houses. And the singular Fabrice Gass is one of our favorite Champagne characters. His wines are made up of Pinot Noir/Chardonnay/Pinot Meunier from the south-facing village of Damery on the slope of the Grand Vallée de la Marne. The wines are made in the manner of 100 years ago. Fabrice farms without chemicals, ferments in wood, and due to the age of his barrels, naturally avoids malolactic fermentation. This disgorgement is based on the 2018 vintage and balances nicely the classic richness of Damery and the ripeness of the vintage with a steely minerality. The palate balances ripe red fruit and a pervasive sense of chalkiness with a creamy texture on the broad, rich finish. John McIlwain
Lunotte 2020 Vin de France Pochetières (Cot)
Wow, we actually got some Cot "Pochetières" from Christiphe Foucher at La Lunotte! (The only other store in the world that has this is in Manitoba, Canada?) The wine shows a dark red/black/amber color with aromas of fresh blackberry, just off the bush, with violet, earth and citrus, pure and lovely. There's a tingle of CO2 on the palate, then pure light-bodied, lush blackberry/black raspberry fruit, beautifully low in alcohol at 11.5%. There are minerals and blood orange with earth and berries in the clean refreshing finish. Serve quite cool and be happy! David Lillie (Natural, zero additives or preservatives, best consumed on day opened. Easy to do.)
Vignes du Maynes 2019 Mâcon-Cruzille Manganite
Made from Gamay Petit Grains planted in 1953, grown on a limestone parcel high in magnesium, in the Clos des Vignes du Maynes in Cruzille, organic since 900 AD (!), now certified Biodynamic. The energetic Julien Guillot vinifies his reds without sulfur or additives of any kind, producing complex, mineral, elegant wines that transcend their appellation. The 2019s here are extraordinary, showing the elegance, purity and balance typical of the estate with the wonderful density and ripeness of the vintage. The wine shows gorgeous red and black fruit aromas with cranberry, earth, stone and musk and hints of mint, chocolate and spice. The palate is bright and intense with blackberry, citrus, stone and earthy flavors, that continue on the very long mineral finish. Always one of the greatest Gamays produced anywhere, the 2019 Manganite is a young wine that will benefit from decanting or five to fifteen years in the cellar. Highly recommended!
Meinklang 2020 Burgenland Weßer Mulatschak
A blend of Welschriesling, Grauburgunder, and Traminer biodynamically grown on a rocky loam soils. Hand-harvested, the grapes macerate for about a week followed by spontaneous fermentation and aging in stainless tank on the lees. The wine is unfined, unfiltered, and only 25 mg/L of SO2 is added before bottling. A nice balance of florals, apricot, slightly oxidized apple, and savory leesiness with just a whisper of texture.
