While there are a multitude of fascinating growers in Champagne (and quite a few characters), one of our absolute favorites is the singular Fabrice Gass from the tiny house Alexandre Filaine in Damery. Thoughtful and without pretense, Fabrice makes memorable wines in the manner Champagne was produced 100 years ago. Farming is organic, though not certified, fermentation is with native yeasts in very old barrels from Bollinger, where he was employed for years. Further, the age of the barrels and the low pH of the must prevents malolactic fermentation, lending cut and drive to the wines. And continuing with the one-man-band theme, the bottles are hand-riddled and manually disgorged. A visit to Fabrice’s tiny domaine is to see meticulously farmed parcels and well-considered vinification. And while the winemaking is as traditional as it comes, the wines are inspiring in their concentration, depth, and poise, with ripe red fruits, creamy texture, and a profound stoniness at their core. Filaine (Fabrice Gass) NV Damery Cuvée Speciale Base 18
The tiny Champagne Filaine is one of our favorite Champagne houses. And the singular Fabrice Gass is one of our favorite Champagne characters. His wines are made up of Pinot Noir/Chardonnay/Pinot Meunier from the south-facing village of Damery on the slope of the Grand Vallée de la Marne. The wines are made in the manner of 100 years ago. Fabrice farms without chemicals, ferments in wood, and due to the age of his barrels, naturally avoids malolactic fermentation. This disgorgement is based on the 2018 vintage and balances nicely the classic richness of Damery and the ripeness of the vintage with a steely minerality. The palate balances ripe red fruit and a pervasive sense of chalkiness with a creamy texture on the broad, rich finish. John McIlwain
Filaine (Fabrice Gass) 16 Base Damery Cuvée DMY
DMY (formerly Confidence) is the same cépages and blend as Filaine's Cuvée Speciale with an extra year or two on the lees and aged under cork, rather than crown cap, lending a burnished character to the wine due to the slow ingress of oxygen. DMY is rich, broad, and sapid, with an impeccable balance between red fruits, citrus notes, and powerfully mineral structure and spice. A special and rare wine. John McIlwain
