Relatively uknown in the US, recommended to us by our friend Pascaline Lepeltier, the Sancerres of Vincent Gaudry are certainly among the finest in the appellation and we are proud to offer superb new arrivals from the 2018 and 2019 vintages.
Based in the village of Grand Chambre near Sury-en-Vaux, the domain was established by Vincent's grandfather with only a few hectares of vines, then passed to Vincent's father Georges who gradually enlarged the estate to 9.5 hectares. Vincent joined his father in 1991—he was 16 years old—and took over completely in 1993. Very soon thereafter, in 1995, he began conversion to organic and then Biodynamic farming (the first in Sancerre). The estate has a high percentage of old vines, which are replaced by massale selection, on all of the three main terroirs of Sancerre - Caillottes, Silex and Terres Blanches.
Plowing is done in the spring, green cover is maintained the rest of the year and Biodynamic preparations and herbal tisanes are used for vineyard treatments. (Even his barrels are produced with the Biodynamic calendar!) Vincent's great farming is preserved through careful vinifications that reveal the complex fruit and beautiful minerality that the terroirs of Sancerre can offer. Most vinifications are done in temperature controlled stainless steel, a few in barrel, all with wild yeasts, of course, and minimal sulfur is used.
In this week's shipment, the whites: 2019 "Le Tournebride," a blend from all three Sancerre terroirs to drink over the next few years, a beautiful wine and great value; 2019 "Melodie de Vieilles Vignes" from 60+ year-old vines on kimmeridgian marl, this is just brilliant in 2019 and will sell out quickly; 2019 "Constellation de Scorpion" from silex soils with a vibrant minerality that begs for a long decant or time in the cellar.
Vincent also makes sensational reds from Pinot Noir and Pinot Fin with whole-cluster fermentations that bring structure and elegance to the gorgeous fruit: 2019 "Vincengétorix" from Pinot Noir and Pinot Fin, a superb blend of complex fruit and mineral flavors; 2018 "Les Garennes" from Pinot Fin on "caillottes" soils, an extraordinarily elegant and silky wine - astonishingly delicious!

Vincent Gaudry has been certified organic and Biodynamic for many years, perhaps the leading domaine in Sancerre in regards to farming. The cuvée "Le Tournebride" comes from all three Sancerre terroirs: terres blanches (Kimmeridgian marl), caillottes (weathered limestone) and flint (silex). The grapes are hand-harvested and ferment with wild yeasts in stainless stell vats, the wine then ages about ten months and is bottled unfiltered. The 2019 "Tournebride" shows a bright very pale gold color with elegant aromas of citrus, white flowers, pear, green apple and quince with hints of anise and fig with time open. The palate is subtle and pure with floral white fruits, a bit of melon, almond and firm citrusy acids—light but with nice density—with a crystalline, stony aspect that continues in the long clean, sapid finish. This is a very elegant Sancerre and a great value which will accompany any mild-flavored fish dish, white meats and goat cheeses. David Lillie
(Arrives 7/26) Vincent Gaudry's extraordinary Sancerre "Constellation du Scorpion" is from a small parcel of old massale-selection vines on silex soils over limestone and is fermented and aged in old barrels. (This is a Sancerre for terroir lovers, be sure to decant if drinking now.) "A bit closed on the nose, a little reduced, as expected for this cuvée on Silex. It is also more austere and restrained on the palate, less broad and wild, more herbal than Mélodie. A great backbone of acidity with more bitterness, less fat and roundness than Melodie. Needs a decant. After 4 min in the glass, it opens up - very floral (seringa), and more on the white pomelo. Real aging potential - as silex tends to really ask for 2-3 years and more in bottle." - Pascaline Lepeltier.

"Opulent, almost tropical nose with gentle notes of sage, anise and kefir leaves. Much more focused and vibrant on the palate than the nose was suggesting. Acidity is on point from the start with a tension and saltiness as soon as the wine touches the lips, then develops more citrus than tropical, especially pink grapefruit, thyme, Asian pear that really lingers on the acidity. It is not a light wine, there is weight from the concentration of the vintage, but there is no lack of vibrancy or freshness. Tasted at Millesime Bio in Montpellier, January 2020, this wine was absolutely sensational! 100% Pinot Fin, the small-berried old version of Pinot Noir, grown on "caillotes" soil, whole cluster fermentation in wooden vat. Deep red/black color, beautiful aromas of cherry liqueur, raspberry and violet; palate chalky and dense with black raspberry and cherry fruit, velvety and long very mineral with a superb finish. Not inexpensive, but worth the price, just a brilliant wine! Enjoy until 2035. David Lillie
