New Arrivals and Returning Favorites - And Soon No 25% Tariffs on EU Wines, for a while anyway...!

Share

No, it's not New Year's Eve all over again, but it's somethng to celebrate - the cancellation (for a four month period) of the senseless, counterproductive, job-killing and consumer f****** 25% tariffs levied by the T**** administration on EU wines! We're not sure when this translates into lower costs, as NYS wine/liquor prices are filed with the state on a monthly basis, and our importer friends will have inventory to move at tariffed levels...but it's great news, especially for the small organic/biodynamic estates that depend partially on export markets to survive.

Returning Favorites:

And be sure to try Thierry's unique Vin de France Terret, made from the forgotten variety, Terret Gris, preserved lovingly by the Navarre family.

Blard & Fils 'Micraster' 2019 is one of the brightest, purest Savoie whites that we've ever tasted. Zesty, well-fruited, with a lean mouthfeel from a family team. Last bottles in the city, so grab what you can!

From Italy, the volcanic influenced Agnanum wines are back in stock. The plummy, bright Rosso is running out... so this is one of our last drops! Cantina Murgo, a rather new addition to our inventory here, is also getting low! A medium-bodied, lovely Sangiovese from Umbria, with soft dark fruits. Last but definitely not least, the Monte Bernardi 'Retromarcia' Chianti has just made its way back. Always delicious...

These are chalky, crystalline Chenins that any lover of the Loire should try - and they are sensational values!

Peybonhomme 2018 Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux Quintessence

The Hubert family are owners of Chateau Peybonhomme-les-Tours in Blaye and Chateau La Grolet in Bourg. The farming here is among the best in Bordeaux, certified organic and Biodynamic. The vineyards are a fantastic oasis of greenery compared to the rest of Bordeaux, and are located on slopes of clay over limestone giving the wines good concentration and firm minerality. The Quintessence of Peybonhomme is a selection of the best juice from tastings each year and is primarily Merlot and Malbec from old vines, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, a portion of which is aged in new oak. The 2018 is a bit more dense and forward than the 2017  - it's a beautiful and lively Bordeaux showing deep aromas of ripe cassis, blackberry, black cherry, cocoa, spice and earth. The palate is supple and ripe, lifted by cool acidity, with complex black fruits, earth and mineral flavors with a long finish. The wine broadens and gains complexity with time open so decant if possible. A versatile food wine, this beautifully balanced Bordeaux will accompany anything from roast chicken to pork dishes to steak. Put a few in your cellar for 10 - 15 years for a mature experience,..

Navarre 2019 Saint-Chinian Le Laouzil

Thierry Navarre's touchstone "Laouzil" is a blend of equal parts Grenache, Carignan, and Syrah from old vines planted on brown schist ("Laouzil" in the local dialect) soils in the rugged mountains of Roquebrun (Saint-Chinian). The grapes are de-stemmed and aged in neutral barrel before bottling with minimal sulfur. The robe is a lovely red/black in the glass. The wine shows seductive aromas of spiced plums, dried rosemary, and deeper notes of coffee and dry earth. The rich palate is bursting with black fruit flavors, peppercorn, and savory herbs with a structured texture of dense minerals and bright acidity on the long, persistent finish. This is a fascinating wine of terroir that Thierry says will be perfect in 5 years (though it's delicious now!).

Navarre 2019 Saint-Chinian Cuvée Olivier

2019 is a great vintage for Thierry Navarre's Cuvée Olivier, from his oldest vines of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan grown in his mountainside vineyards in Saint-Chinian. Deep and very complex aromas of black raspberry and blueberry with hints of roast meats, espresso, violets, chocolate and citrus. Lovely palate of ripe red and black fruits, earth and citrus lifted by firm acidity. This is a beautiful Languedoc red — rich, ripe and complex and surprisingly "fresh" with good acidity and fabulous length. Organic farming, minimal sulfur. Highly recommended.

Peybonhomme 2018 Premières Côte de Blaye Cru Bourgeois

Biodynamic farming,  native yeast fermentations, superb value – all phrases not typically associated with Bordeaux. Yet, each year the Hubert family provides us with just that in their staple cuvee from the Côte de Blaye. The Cru Bourgeois is a blend of mostly Merlot with Cabernet Franc, and a bit of Malbec. Generously aromatic  owing to the limestone/clay soils in which it is grown, the 2018 offers crushed violets, cassis, and rhubarb on the nose. The palate shows the warm vintage with finesse. Cascades of ripe red fruit, black currant, and spice, with supple tannins and an undercurrent of chalky minerality. This is a great addition to the dinner table alongside grilled meat, roast chicken and stews or sipped on its own, drink over the next 5 to 8 years.

Grolet 2019 Côtes de Bourg "Origines"

Our biodynamic friends, the Hubert family, make the lovely  Chateau La Grolet "Origines" from old vines of 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec. The 2019 shows a deep red/black color with high-toned aromas of ripe cassis and black raspberry with cedar, brown spice and earth, really quite pretty. The palate is supple, elegant and well-structured with cassis and red fruits over firm acidity with earth and mineral flavors. This is a real Bordeaux of terroir that is delicious now especially if decanted many hours in advance or opened the night before. Cellaring for five to ten years will create a lovely mature wine. Navarre 2019 Vin de France Terret Cépage Oublié

Thierry Navarre, and his father before him, have preserved old varieties native to the Languedoc in their hillside vineyards above Rocquebrun in Saint-Chinian. The 2019 Terret Gris shows a slightly amber, gold color with notes of fresh apple and pear, with dried herbs and minerals in a slightly oxidative style. Serve as an aperitif, with mountain cheeses and with fish or chicken in sauce. This is a unique and delicious natural wine that is highly recommended.

Barth, Laurent 2018 Alsace Racines Métisses

Laurent Barth's 2018 "Racines Metisses" is a delightful blend of many grape  varieties from his tiny organic estate in Bennwihr. Always around 50% Pinot Auxerrois (fermented separately), with Muscat, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, and a touch of Riesling. The idea here is to make a wine that is easy to drink, says Laurent, and he nails it! The wine shows bright citrus, lime-flower, white fruits and Riesling aromas -  there's a subtle touch of spice on the palate, with silky white fruits, citrus and floral notes, with a crystalline minerality in the finish, thanks to the granite soils.  Delicious!  Eben Lillie

Barth, Laurent 2018 Alsace Pinot D'Alsace

Laurent Barth makes beautifully balanced Alsatian wines from his tiny organic estate in Bennwhir, near Colmar. The 2018 Pinot d'Alsace (Pinot Auxerrois with a bit of Pinot Noir) is a lovely aperitif and a perfect wine for many fish and chicken dishes. Showing pretty aromas of pear, green apple, almond and lime-flower with citrus, pear, almond, honeysuckle and herbal flavors on the palate - really pretty, round and balanced  with minerals and white fruits in the  supple finish - this is a great value and a good introduction to the beautiful wines of Laurent Barth. Terres Blanches (Benoit Blet) 2018 Vin de France 3 Poiriers

We love the wines of Benoit and Celine Blet at Les Terres Blanches in Oiron, grown on unique terroirs of limestone marls, quarts and sandstone. Tasted in January of 2020 in France, "Les Trois Poiriers" showed elegant aromas of pear, apple and minerals and a beautifully silky palate with white fruit, herbal, citrus, spice and stone flavors with excellent length. "Elegant" is the key word for this very unique and delicious wine, certainly one of the best values in Chenin Blanc you'll find anywhere.  David Lillie

Terres Blanches (Benoit Blet) 2018 Vin de France Ancestral Brut

Les Terres Blanches Brut Ancestrale is 100% Chenin Blanc from low yielding vines in soils of sandy clay, quartz and limestone. The initial fermentation is in underground cement vats, without SO2, finishing at 22 - 23 gr/liter of sugar. The fermentation in bottle finishes quite dry and there is no dosage at disgorgement. This is  a wonderfully elegant and crystalline Pet Nat showing lovely subtle aromas of pear, peach and grapefruit, with beautiful chalky, stony acidity and terrific length. Just delicious!

Adam, A.J. 2019 "In der Sängerei" Riesling Feinherb

AJ Adam's "in der Sangerei" is from a parcel within Dhron Hofberg, fermented with native yeasts and bottled as a feinherb. The wine has a pale yellow green robe. The nose is a bit reserved with a touch of sponti, but with a bit of air and active swirling reveals aromas of lemon blossom, grapefruit peel, lemon verbena, anise, and wet stone. The just shy of mid-weight, off-dry palate offers pretty white stone fruit and pear skin flavors of startling intensity, giving way to a deeply salty, mineral core that would send geologists and poets scrambling for descriptors. But lest you think the rocks have the last word, there’s a lovely flush of fruit and spice that crests and then lingers as the earthy character subsides—all in a Feinherb, no less. And while there are many who think the summits of Riesling greatness are manifested in either their baroque Grosses Gewaches grandeur or nobly sweet timeless embrace, this is a convincing argument for just what manner of beauty can lie outside those categories. A sensational bottle with crab and charred scallion donabe rice, but I’d love to enjoy this with a plate of asparagus and Black Forest ham or even give it a spin with a ragout of peas, favas, and morels with a flurry of tarragon. Blard & Fils 'Micraster' 2019 Vin de Savoie Abymes

Domaine Blard & Fils is a family business, currently run by Jean-Noel and his son Thomas. Most of their wines come from the regions of Abymes and Apremont, which host soil types greatly affected by the 1248 landslide of Mt. Granier. The 2018 'Micraster' is 100% Jacquere grown in clay and limestone scree. Vines are 30 years and older. Fermented and aged in stainless steel for a short 3 months before bottling. Fermentation happens with native yeasts.  Nose is a restrained display of grass, spring water, sea shells, lemon pith, and a floral, yellow cherry. The palate has a foundation of pleasant apricot, salt, green herbs and stems. Lovely acidity, a touch of tannin under the tongue. Extremely drinkable, but don't let that fool you. Like the best Savoie whites, if you engage with this bottle, you'll find a lot going on under its cloak of endearing simplicity. David Hatzopoulos

Cantina Margo 2019 Umbria Rosso

Carlo Tabarrini started the small winery Cantina Margo, in 2008 with half a hectare of vines. He now farms 3 hectares, still a very modest surface, all in Umbria, all planted to indigenous varieties. The Rosso is 100% Sangiovese, fermented in stainless steel and fiberglass and aged mostly in old wood, with no addition of sulfur, or filtration. Bright and vibrant, with fresh red fruit and refreshing acidity. Not too light though! Overall on the lighter side of medium bodied, with nice earthiness in the mid-palate and a clean finish. -EL

Agnanum 2019 Campania Piedirosso Sabbia Vulcanica

The 2018 Sabbia Rosso taught me how to love Campania. This '19 is just as delicious. So expressive - the nose is a dense bouquet of dark flowers, plums, and salt. There are bold, warm scents of espresso and baked cherries. Definitely more sultry than the rustic 2018, with a little less earth and a bit more perfume, but with an attractiveness so honestly displayed that it is just as humble of a wine. The palate shows the classic plummy flavor Piedirosso almost always carries. I can taste graphite and herbs that remind me of Cabernet Franc, and a brininess that reminds me of Rhone Syrah. Structure is perfect, with dry tannin on the gums and tongue, refreshed by a bolt of minerally acidity. Pair with anything that is full of anchovies, thick tomato sauce, and black olives. Or drink it while waiting to Zoom with your brothers on a Saturday night. That's what I'm doing. Anyway, Agnanum, I love you. David Hatzopoulos

Agnanum 2019 Campania Falanghina Sabbia Vulcanica

Agnanum is absolutely one of my favorite producers in all of Italy. Farming without the use of commercial products or machinery, the Moccia family is one of the last to grow grapes on these incredible, volcanic slopes. Wines are fermented with native yeasts. As authentic as they come, the 2019 Falanghina Sabbia a bold white - with diced pears and apples on the nose, lemongrass and green tea. Flavors of savory, orange citrus, spicy orchard fruit, and flashy white stones on the tongue. A satisfying mouthfeel, with density and swish. Acidity is bright. Day two, the wine develops a golden color, and the wine takes on notes of small, ripe stone fruits and saline. David Hatzopoulos
