Envínate 2019: Wines of Tenerife and Ribeira Sacra

Share

The wines from Envínate don't need much introduction. Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Laura Ramos, and José Martínez are making some of the most sought after and exciting wines in Spain, from organically farmed vineyards in Galicia, Castilla-La Mancha, and the Canary Islands.

Today's offer is for wines, mainly from single vineyards, from Tenerife and Ribeira Sacra. Quantities are very limited, but we are happy to offer a bit more than we have been able to in the past. Per the winemakers, this was a very successful vintage. As in the past few years, it was quite dry in Tenerife, but less so in Orotava, and the conditions were ideal for Listan Blanco. 2019 was a nearly perfect vintage in Ribeira Sacra, with even ripening throughout the spring and summer, and a dry, mild end of summer and early fall, allowing for a slow, gradual maturation on the vines. Compared to prior vintages, I found all of the wines relatively more approachable for early drinking, but definitely destined for improvement in the cellar.

If you're interested in more detailed information about Envínate, please take a look at our prior offer, where I went into more detail about their Tenerife project.

All wines will be in store by Monday, March 1st.

Envinate 2019 Ribeira Sacra Lousas Vinas de Aldea

The Lousas Vinas de Aldea is the village cuvee from Envinate’s vineyards in Ribeira Sacra, sourced from mainly the Riberas do Sil region, with smaller amounts from vineyards in Amandi and Quiroga-Bibei. The blend ends up being about 80% Mencia and 20% a mix of the other local grape varieties like Brancellao, Caiño, Sousón, Garnacha Tintorera and others. Grapes are harvested by hand, ferment with native yeasts, and age in concrete, used French oak and foudres. The 2019 vintage was very good, with moderate temperatures unlike the past few hotter years, and perhaps as a result this year’s wine is more approachable and open than the 2018 or 2017 vintages, showing delicate herbal tones and vibrant red fruit on the nose, and a medium-bodied palate brimming with macerated strawberries, mineral notes, and delicate tannins.

Envinate 2019 Tenerife Migan Tinto

100% Listán Negro, from two vineyards near La Perdoma in the Valle de la Orotava: San Antonio and La Habanera. Both are composed of old vines (80-100 years) and planted on volcanic soils with substantial amounts of clay, sand and basalt. Climactically, the Valle de la Orotava is wet and very windy, despite the altitude (350-650m above sea level). The grapes for Migan are harvested by hand and fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete with some whole cluster inclusion before aging for about a year in neutral French oak barrels. Bottling is without fining or filtering, and with just a touch of sulfur. This shows the classic, spicy volcanic character of Orotava, with plenty of savory, earthy substance on the palate. Envinate 2019 Tenerife Palo Blanco

100% Listán Blanco from centenarian vines in the black volcanic soil of the Palo Blanco vineyard, in the Valle de la Orotava of northern Tenerife. This area is humid despite the substantial elevation (600m above sea level), and the vines are trained in the braided Cordon Trenzado method to promote airflow. All grapes are hand harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete before aging in a mix of foudre and used barrels for 10 months. Bottled without fining or filtering, and with only a touch of sulfur. This year's expression of Palo Blanco is concentrated and extremely savory, with notes of sea salt, stone, and volcanic spice. Envinate 2019 Tenerife Taganan Tinto

A field blend of many grapes, mostly red: Listán Negro, Listán Gaucho, Malvasia Nera, Negramoll, Baboso, and many others. The vineyard is on the northeast coast of Tenerife, planted from the water up to 300m above sea level. These ancient vines (70-300 years old) are planted on very steeply terraced, sandy, basaltic soils. All grapes are hand harvested, then undergo fermentation by indigenous yeasts with some whole clusters in open-top vats and concrete. The wine is aged in neutral oak for eight months before bottling without fining or filtering, and with only a touch of sulfur. Ben Fletcher Arrives Monday, 3/1.

Envinate 2019 Tenerife Taganan Tinto Parcela Margalagua

Margalagua is a parcel of the Taganan vineyard composed of 100-300 year old vines of red grapes on a uniquely iron-rich seam of soil with distinctive red basalt. Due to the silky character of the wines that this parcel produces, it is vinified differently with a much longer (30-45 day) maceration and 100% stem-inclusion, yielding a darker, bolder, richer wine.  This is outstanding in 2019, with spicy black fruit, savory volcanic spice, and structuring tannins. Envinate 2019 Tenerife Benje Tinto Magnum

Listán Prieto from vineyards at around 1000-1200m near Santiago del Teide on Tenerife. This vineyard has sandy volcanic soils, and the vines are 70-100 years old. Climactically, this region is dry, windy, and continental in character, shielded from Atlantic influence by Mount Teide and elevation. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented with indigenous yeasts with a maceration period of 10-20 days and punch-downs daily before aging for eight months in concrete and used French oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered with a touch of sulfur. This year's Benje Tinto is open and ready to go - a great expression of the spice, minerality and intensity of Tenerife's volcanic soils paired with the delicacy and freshness of Listan Prieto.  Ben Fletcher
