For our purposes, Prunotto is really the story of Beppe Colla, who was already a highly experienced winemaker and grape buyer when he bought Prunotto in 1956. Since Prunotto didn’t own vineyards at the time, Colla’s deep knowledge of the vineyards was crucial in sourcing the best quality fruit, and his interest in the land led him (in 1961) to be one of the first to bottle a single-vineyard Barolo and Barbaresco. Until 1990, when the Colla family sold to Antinori, the wines that Beppe Colla made at Prunotto were among the best of Piedmont, and therefore some of the best wines made in Italy. Or in the world. I think they remain under-appreciated and accordingly reasonably priced for their consistently very high quality. Jamie Wolff
