Arlaud 2016 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru
50+ year-old vines from the top of the Mazoyères section of Charmes-Chambertin, beneath Latricières, adjacent to Domaine Leroy's vines. 20% new oak. This is also a step-up from the already excellent 1ers. Effusively aromatic, with scents of perfectly ripe orchard fruit. Pure cherry, red and black plums, spice box, and game notes. The nose is kaleidoscopic, layered, and dazzling for Charmes. The palate is equally impressive, with layer after layer of perfectly ripe Pinot fruit, vying with a profound stoniness for attention. This has a deeply mineral core and has the lift to carry all the stoniness. Finely-grained tannins and succulent acidity run through the finish. This is great Charmes! Needs 10-15+ years, but just electric. Wow! John McIlwain
Bachelet, Denis 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes
Denis Bachelet farms his Vieilles Vignes from 3.05 acres of vines planted in1932-1937. He produces approximately 580 cases of Vieilles Vignes in a good year. This is a great village level Gevrey Chambertin that can age for twenty years or longer (if you could possibly keep from drinking it all).

Millot, Jean-Marc 2008 Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru
Don't be put off here by the reputation of 2008 for producing hard, unyielding wines - Jean-Marc Millot's Grand Echezeaux is in a lovely place. From sixty-year old vines, this is showing dark red and blue fruit, hoisin, sous-bois and that classic spiciness that makes Vosne so compelling. The wood is extremely well-integrated here and if the acid was ever at all out of joint (a concern with some '08s) it is not now - the fruit has sweetened around it and the wine feels beautifully balanced. This has real class and Grand Cru elegance. Sam Ehrlich
