Marguet Père and Fils 2014 Champagne Extra Brut Grand Cru Ambonnay Rosé (disg. 3/19)

While we love biodynamic grower Benoît Marguet's Champagnes for their combination of Ambonnay power and frank minerality, it may be that his most pleasurable wine is his excellent vintage-dated rosé. Chardonnay dominated in a village noted for its Pinot Noir, the wine offer a beautiful nose highlighted by aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry seed, tarragon, and chalk. The palate is brightly mineral and structured, with a deep stoniness at its core within its layers of ripe red fruits and savory notes. The wine balances deftly its grand cru power with a lacy bead, vibrant acidity, and achingly pretty florality. This is natural Champagne and an absolute joy to drink.  John McIlwain

Suenen 2016 Base Champagne Oiry Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra-Brut

The exacting Aurelien Suenen is one of our favorite growers in Champagne. The wines deftly combine incisive chalkiness with pure vibrant fruit. And his 2016 based Oiry Blanc de Blancs is a beauty. This is somewhat obscure appellation—we haven't been able to find another Champagne with this single village designation, as yet—so this is a fine opportunity to taste Oiry's distinctive, chalky terroir. Aurelien's parcels contain some very old Chardonnay vines which make for some pungently mineral, stony wines. The vins clairs are fermented partially in barrel, spend nine months on the lees, and are bottled with 2 g/L dosage. The 2016 is brisk, briny, and fresh on the nose with aromas of yuzu, Meyer lemon, quinine, and chalk dominating. The palate is lacy, nervy and very dry with racy acidity and an energetic driving finish. Suenen continues to grow with each vintage and this line-up of village designated Champagnes is particularly exciting. The 2016 will make a fine aperitif and shine brightly with crudo, sashimi, and creamy cheeses.  John McIlwain

Agrapart NV (base 16) Champagne Extra Brut Terroirs Blanc des Blancs

Terroirs is a blend of Chardonnay from multiple parcels like the 7 Crus cuvée, but from older vines planted in mid-slope chalk and clay soils and aged longer on the lees, with some barrel-aged reserve wine lending another layer of complexity.

Filaine (Fabrice Gass) NV Damery Cuvée Speciale Base 16

Filaine is one of our favorite Champagne houses.  And the singular Fabrice Gass is one of our favorite Champagne characters. His wines  are made up of  Pinot Noir/Chardonnay/Pinot Meunier from the south-facing village of Damery in the Vallée de la Marne. The wines are made in the manner of 100 years ago. Fabrice farms without chemicals, ferments in wood, and due to the age of his barrels, avoids malolactic fermentation.  This disgorgement is based on the 2016 vintage and balances nicely the classic richness of Damery with undertones of minerality.  Aromatically the wines offer up aromas of baked apple, spices, and soil notes. On the palate flavors of ripe red fruit and a pervasive sense of chalkiness vie with with a creamy texture on the broad, rich finish. This is a perfect wine for the holiday table with its balance of generous fruit and earthy structure. John McIlwain

Chartogne-Taillet 2015 Champagne Extra-Brut Cuvée Les Barres Pinot Noir

After years of releasing Les Barres as a parcellaire featuring Pinot Meunier, Alexandre Chartogne has bottled a small amount of Les Barres in Pinot Noir. The 2015 Pinot Noir, distinguished by the black label, offers aromas of red fruit, bosky herbs, and dried flowers. The palate is ample and generous, while displaying a subtle minerality and a racy, persistent finish. As we've yet to do the side by side comparison with the Pinot Meunier derived Les Barres, we are intrigued by the possibility of contrasting cépage and terroir to see which expresses itself more clearly. Suenen 2016 Base Champagne Oiry Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra-Brut 1.5

Aurelien Suenen is one of the bright young stars of the Côte des Blancs, whose Champagnes seem to improve with every new release. His 2016 based Oiry Blanc de Blancs is a beauty. De Villaine, A.P. 2014 Bouzeron Aligoté

A bright and briny Bouzeron from  Aubert de Villaine displays the chalky, ground oyster shell nerviness of the Aligoté grape. The 2014 offers aromas of sea breeze, Meyer lemon peel, lemon verbena, and white fruits on the nose. Citrus fruit and saline character mark the racy, brisk palate with a long chalky lifted finish. Enjoy with fresh goat cheeses, or a platter of raw oysters. John McIlwain

De Villaine, A.et P. 2016 Bouzeron Aligoté

If there's a "grand cru" for the Aligoté grape it is probably in the appellation of Bouzeron. And Domaine A & P de Villaine  produces one of best. The  low-yielding, aromatic Aligoté d'Or grapes are farmed organically, pressed gently, and fermented in tank and oak casks.  A bright and briny Bouzeron from Aubert de Villaine displays the chalky, ground oyster shell nerviness of the Aligoté grape. The 2016 offers aromas of sea breeze, Meyer lemon peel, lemon verbena, and white fruits on the nose. Citrus fruit and saline character mark the racy, brisk palate with a long chalky lifted finish. Belluard 2017 Vin de Savoie Les Alpes

"Les Alpes" is a blend of two parcels - one close to Dominique's home on marl soils and the other rich in limestone. The wine is fermented and aged in concrete eggs before it's blended in tank and bottled with minimal sulfur. It is usually the lighter of Dominique's still Gringet bottlings. The 2017 shows pretty mountain flowers, ripe and tangy pineapple flesh with faint notes of orange blossom on the nose. The palate is textured with salty stones and tart acidity which showcases the ripe flavors of tropical fruit and fresh herbs. There is a lively energy to this wine that makes it great for early drinking or short term cellaring. Amanda Bowman

Lapierre 2018 Morgon Cuvee N

Especially during the 3-6 month period after bottling, the "N" ( no SO2 added) Morgon from the Lapierre camp is generally more open and lifted aromatically, with pure fruit and great mid-palate and finish. Often the version with SO2 added before bottling is more closed and muted aromatically and needs a bit more time to open up before showing off all the pretty red fruit. There have been several tastings that can be researched for more insight on these different versions of an otherwise identical wine. Some posit that the bottling with SO2 added would be a better candidate for long time aging, but I'm not sure I concur. We will have to put a bottle of each 2018 away and return to this conversation next decade!   -EL

Vignes du Maynes 2016 Macon-Cruzille Aragonite

From 40 to 80 year-old massale-selection Chardonnay vines high on the slope in Cruzille on limestone with a great deal of calcium carbonate crystal (aragonite) with thin topsoils of clay and silica, never treated with chemicals, certified biodynamic. Fermentation is in 600 liter barrels with wild yeasts, aged 10 months sur-lie without racking, no SO2 until a small dosage (10 - 20 mg/l) before bottling. The 2016 "Aragonite" is a superb, well structured white Burgundy that will age beautifully. The wine shows elegant aromas of pear, lemon confit, lime-flower, toasted almond and stone, really lovely. The palate is intensely mineral and framed in firm acidity, with white fruits, citrus, spice and stone flavors. The living soils of the Clos give this wine an extra dimension of acidity and saline minerals that will contribute to a long life for this lovely wine, perhaps best 2025-2035, but it's delicious as a young wine as well. Highly recommended.  David Lillie

Sansonnière (Marc Angéli) 2017 Vin de France La Lune

In 2017, another vintage badly hit by the frost, the estate lost 50% of their crop, giving wines with a lot of concentration. The vintage was quite sunny and relatively easy in terms of farming, harvest was early with good ripeness. Acidity stayed surprisingly good, balancing out the little residual sugar left. A lot of honey, quince and liquorice both on the nose, the palate has a serious structure, the acid back-bone being discreetly hidden behind the ripeness. A bottle to enjoy with a Moroccan vegetable tajine and or chicken masala. You can cellar it for 10 years. 8g RS, 35 ppm total of volcanic sulfur. Pascaline Lepeltier.
