Descombes, Georges 2011 Morgon Tres Vieilles Vignes "Vermont"
This special cuvée of Morgon (3,000 bottles) was made from vines more than 100 years old - the last vintage before replanting - and the wine was aged in one and two year-old barrels.
Descombes, Georges 2014 Chiroubles Vieilles Vignes
The Vieilles Vignes bottlings from Georges Descombes are always among our favorite Beaujolais, and we're very happy to finally have the lovely 2014s in the store! A difficult growing season that was saved by good weather at the end of summer, 2014 produced beautifully balanced and very expressive wines in Beaujolais. The Chiroubles Vieilles Vignes shows floral, spiced strawberry and blackberry fruit, with hints of graphite, earth and citrus. Bright plum, strawberry and black fruits on the palate with rose and citrus, textured and mineral with nice length of berry fruits, bright acidity and earth in the finish. This is a lovely, beautifully balanced Chiroubles, at 12.5% alcohol, that is delicious now, best perhaps 2020 - 2025. DL
Descombes, Georges 2014 Morgon Vieilles Vignes
This is an extremely pretty Morgon, showing subtle high-toned black raspberry and tart cherry aromas with plum, violet, citrus and brown spice, really lovely. The black and red fruits continue on the palate with complex notes of blood orange, earth, mint and spice. The wine is dense and structured but bright and balanced, finishing with refreshing acidity and mineral flavors. Delicious now, this should be superb in three to five years, and should drink well till 2027. DL
Descombes, Georges 2014 Regnié Vieilles Vignes
This beautiful Regnié has the perfect weight, density and sublte flavors to be a great choice for Thanksgiving! The Descombes Regnié Vieilles Vignes is superb in 2014, showing lovely aromas of red currant and strawberry, violet, orange peel, brown spice and soil. There is velvety strawberry and blackberry compote on the palate with rose, pomegranate, earth and citrus. The finish is long with lemony acidity, mineral flavors and pretty red fruits. This is a complex and beautifully balanced Regnié that is delicious now, with aeration, and it should be superb from 2020 to 2026+. Highly recommended. David Lillie
Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun) 2009 Moulin-à-Vent
From four hectares in "Maison Neuve" with another hectare soon to be added. The vines are 30 to 45 years old, the soil is "roche pourri" with a high manganese content. There is little vegetation as the sandy topsoil is crammed with stones. Here's John Gilman on the wonderful 2009 Moulin-a-Vent "...may well be the finest wine in his utterly profound portfolio of magical wines from this vintage. The bouquet is deep, pure and classically reserved... the palate is full-bodied, very pure and rock-solid to the core... the finish is very, very long, with ripe, perfectly integrated tannins and stunning grip and balance. Just a glorious young bottle of Moulin-a-Vent!" There was more, but you get the idea....
Clos du Rouge Gorge (Cyril Fhal) 2013 VdP des Côtes Catalanes Vieilles Vignes
90% Carignan, 10% Grenache, from 70 to 100 year-old vines on north and east facing slopes on terroir of gneiss. Yields of 15 to 20 hl/ha. Light foot pressing, whole bunch fermentation in wooden vats. Light extraction at low temperature, no pumping over or cap punching, 12 months in 500 liter barrel and old barriques. Bottled unfiltered, by gravity, total SO2 less than 20 mg/liter. Wild aromas of blackberry, black cherry, violet, musk, mint, spice and earth. The palate is intense with black fruit, spice, cocoa and mineral flavors backed by very firm acidity. This has tightened up since bottling - decant many hours if serving now - a profound wine that will drink best perhaps 2020 - 2030.
Perrin, Roger 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve de Vieilles Vignes
13.6 hectares of vines. The Reserve des Vieilles Vignes is Grenache 70%, Syrah 15%, Mourvedre 10%, Counoise 5%. Aging is 11-13 months with 80% in partly new barriques, and the rest in large barrels. Bottled unfiltered.
