Early spring at Emidio Pepe: vines, lemons, olives...

Veronelli Collection: Abruzzo

Abruzzo appears in my imagination like an island, a country unto itself, a sensation that is amplified because I’ve only been there once, and what we saw, from the sea to the mountains, was very beautiful. A few years later I have no memory of seeing anything industrial or even very modern; instead I have a romantic notion of a contentedly isolated life that hasn’t changed much. Most likely that’s at least partially city-boy romanticism.

Visiting Pepe was most memorable – for their wine, of course, but also for their hospitality (great food with the great wine!)and quiet but evident delight in their good fortune in living where they do. Their famous wine ages spectacularly, as do Valentini’s even better known wines, and the following list includes many other treasures of Abruzzo.

The Veronelli cellar was very hard on labels – too humid for paper (fine for corks). We sometimes clean old bottles to remove years of dust and dirt so that they are more conventional in appearance, but this time we’ve decided that you would enjoy sharing the kick we get out of having the wines as-is, direct from the cellar; it’s part of the pleasure of the history of these bottles.
