Fourrier 2016 Vosnee Romanée Aux Réas Vieille Vigne

In the past ten or so years, the wines of Jean-Marie Fourrier have gone from one of the best-kept secrets in Burgundy to one of the best-known quantities. These are wines of almost heartbreaking delicacy, brimming with fragile pure red fruit and spice. The viticulture here is first rate and the use of new oak is fabulously restrained, notable in a village where it is often applied lavishly. "Aux Réas" sits just south of the village of Vosne Romanée itself, adjacent to the 1er Cru "Clos des Réas." In an appellation that produces perhaps the most coveted and expensive wines in the region, this is an astonishing value.

Lafarge, Michel 2004 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Chateau des Ducs

Aromatically this showed very tight in June, but it was fabulous on the palate — complex red fruit and terroir, very ripe tannin and beautiful acidity, amazing length. A delicious and most refined wine. JW

Collin, Ulysses 2010 Champagne Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs Les Maillons

Olivier Collin's "Les Maillons" bottling is an arresting and unique bottle of wine. Unlike Collin's other single vineyard wines, which come from close to his winery in Congy, Les Maillons is half an hour away by car, and these 40+ year old vines are planted on dark, clay rich soil. As always with Collin's Champagnes, the grapes are harvested at low yields and very ripe, resulting in a rich, complex finished product that is packed with intense, stony flavors. Les Maillons is faintly pink in the glass, and offers vivid red fruit aromas of sour cherry, red currant, and cranberry. The wine is unapologetically dry on the palate and fleshes out with time open. Baudry 2013 Chinon Domaine

From the marvelous father/son team Bernard and Matthieu Baudry comes this beatiful Chinon from the difficult 2013 vintage. The wine comes from parcels in Saint-Louans on clay/limestone and in 2013 it contains much of the juice from les Grezeaux, the Baudry's great gravel-based parcel in Cravant. The aromas are bright and earthy with raspberry/strawberry fruit and hints of citrus, fresh herbs and pepper. The palate is fairly light with raspberry, earth, licorice and herbal notes backed with bright acidity. Serve quite cool with pork, chicken, charcuterie and mild cheeses or with a fish in sauce. This will be an interesting mature wine with 5 to 8 years of cellaring...

Chasse Spleen 1996 Moulis

The wines of Chasse-Spleen come from Moulis-en-Medoc, a small village to the north-west of Margaux. Like Margaux, the soil content has a large amount of gravel, but uniquely Moulis hosts underlying layers of clay and limestone.  Chateau Chasse Spleen is the most well known of the producers in this village, producing Bordeaux blends with high portions of Cabernet Sauvignon.
