We have previously mentioned the greatness of the 2018 vintage in the Loire Valley, which many growers are comparing to 1947. After a warm and wet spring/early summer that caused difficulties with mildew, the balance of the growing season through October was ideal and without great extremes of temperature allowing the late ripening Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc of Touraine to develop perfectly. We again quote Chris Kissack from the superb site TheWineDoctor.com: "Here in Touraine, though, as well as many promising white wines, I suspect we are going to find some of the most striking wines of this vintage. It is somewhat ironic that while I have heard 2018 likened to the fabled 1947 vintage by vignerons at opposite ends of the Loire Valley, in Muscadet and in Sancerre, it is in fact here in Touraine that I think the wines will prove the wisdom of these words."
We have just received our allocation of the 2018 Vouvrays from Domaine Huet, certainly one of the finest estates in the Loire Valley, producing some of the world's greatest Chenin Blancs. Recent vintages here have been superb, under the direction of the Hwang family and winemaker Jean-Bernard Berthomé, who has been at the estate since 1979. While the 2018s lack the vibrant acidity of my favorite 1996s, the ripeness and balance is extraordinary, making these a requirement for any lover of great Chenin or of this outstanding domain. Given the wonderful conditions for producing Demi-Sec and Moelleux wines - the specialty of Huet - there is very little dry wine to be had, with only a small quantity of Clos du Bourg Sec available. And while the Demi-Sec and Moelleux wines will age gracefully for thirty years and more, making them prime candidates for cellaring, the beautiful ripeness will make them hard to resist in their youth! As a special Thanksgiving treat, we're happy to offer the rare and beautiful 2018 Huet Vouvray "Clos du Bourg" Sec. In this superb vintage for Vouvray, Domaine Huet produced very little dry wine, prefering to make Demi-Sec and Moelleux in this ripe vintage, but the small amount they made is absolutely gorgeous with lovely aromas of white fruits, flowers and stone. The palate is crystalline and elegant with white fruits and sensational minerality - just a great Chenin and a superb accompaniment to your feast! 2018 Clos du Bourg Sec: 13.7% alc; 4 g/l RS; 4.4 g/l total acidity; pH 3.16
