We're very excited to have our second shipment of extraordinary Jura wines from Estelle and Raphael Monnier of "Ratapoil!" A bit of explanation from Estelle and Raphaël:
"After ten years of work and pleasure in the vines as Ratapoil (slang for an amateur vigneron in the Arbois) the passion for wine took us and it was the beginning of our professional adventure in 2009. Our little domaine of 2 hectares, situated in the AOC Arbois, has been farmed organically since its creation. We wish to obtain very healthy grapes which require little intervention in the cellar. A living soil and balanced healthy vegetation are the two essential goals of our work in the vines. Our grapes are harvested by hand, and ferment with wild yeasts and without chaptalization. The wines are not fined or filtered and sulfur is rarely used, according to the needs of each wine. Our objective is to obtain wines that represent the terroirs of Arbois, expressing their minerality."
Another objective at Ratapoil is the preservation of ancient Arbois varieties, which are found in the cuvées "Le Ratapoil" white and red. The reds are produced by carbonic maceration, and are light, delicate and beatifully fragrant and are bottled with zero added SO2, as is the le Ratapoil Blanc. The superb Vin Jaune is from the 2011 vintage and was bottled in the Spring of 2018 after more than six years sous-voile.
(As with many wines with no added SO2, they are best consumed the day opened) Quantities are tiny, so please 2 btl maximum on the 2017 Partout. David Lillie
Please join us at Racines NY on Tuesday May 21 to taste these rare and unique wines, beginning at 6pm. 6 half-pours $45, reservations suggested, firstname.lastname@example.org
The first Vin Jaune made at Ratapoil, from "Savagnins du Clos Saint-Paul, en Arbois." Zero additives and bottled unfiltered in the spring of 2018 after seven years sous-voile.
The Ratapoil Macvin is a blend of Chardonnay and marc, produced in 2010 at 17.5 % alcohol. "A deguster a l'aperitif ou en fin du repas."
The 2016 Ratapoil Blanc is mostly Chardonnay blended with ancient varieties grown in Buffard, north of Arbois, and a nineteenth century hybrid called Seybel, vinified with zero additives. On the nose, this wine entertains with sour green apple, lemon curd, fresh ginger, and even a touch of lychee. For a wine that is clearly high in acidity, it's actually quite dense on the palate, with notes of quince, passion fruit, and almonds. Leaning towards a slightly nutty, oxidative side, but never reaching it, the finish is not perfectly clean, but maintains balance... and the wine doesn't fall apart, actually evolving quite nicely over a couple of hours. Honestly imperfect, and fun to drink. Food pairings abound, from scallops to bitter spring greens, could even pair with grilled meats on a warm day. Eben Lillie
The Ratapoil 2017 "Partout" is a blend of Ploussard and Trousseau - a tiny production due to the spring frost - carbonic maceration with wild yeasts, without additives and bottled unfiltered. The wine shows an opaque garnet color with aromas of plum, blackberry, rose, brown spice and orange peel. The palate is a bit more structured and tannic than the Ratapoil Ploussard, with the Trousseau bringing earthy blackberry fruit, with a bit of funk, raspberry and citrus, with earthy tart fruits and bright acidity lingering in the finish that is intriguing and long. Yum! (As with many zero SO2 wines, best consumed the day opened) David Lillie
The 2016 "Par Ici" is from Ploussard vines in the parcel "Les Grappes" in Buvilly, near Pupillin, vinified in carbonic maceration with wild yeasts, with zero additives, and bottled unfiltered. The color is a very pale garnet, there is slight reduction then aromas of raspberry, red currant, earth, rose petal and orange peel. The palate is light but grippy with tart raspberry and cherry, with a long finish of firm acidity, stone and tart red fruits. Lovely wine.
