Since its founding in 1877, Bodega R. Lopez de Heredia has produced the benchmark wines of the Rioja region. For the past 142 years, the estate's wines have represented Rioja's unique style and terroir to the world. Unlike the vast majority of estates and cooperatives in the region, the estate has remained continuously family-owned, and only ever produced wines from grapes within the Rioja DOC. These wines are well suited to cellaring, but approachable and exciting to drink now.
The wines on offer today are the produce of four vineyards: Viña Tondonia, El Bosque, Viña Cubillas, and Viña Zaconia. Each vineyard is planted with the traditional grape varieties of Rioja: the red grapes Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano in the Tondonia, El Bosque, and Cubillas vineyards; and the white grapes Viura and Malvasia in the Viña Zaconia and the Viña Tondonia.
The Viña Tondonia, a more than 100 hectare assemblage of vineyards acquired by the estate in 1913, is situated on a large meander of the river Ebro for which it is named (from the Latin rotundus "round"). This is the largest vineyard owned and worked by the Lopez estate, and the grapes are used in the production of both white and red Reserva wines, and in exceptional years a small number of Gran Reserva bottles.
The 15 hectare El Bosque vineyard is located a kilometre away from the winery in Haro in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria mountain range, and produces red Reserva wines and red Gran Reserva bottlings in the best years. The vineyard's position on southfacing slopes of clay and limestone allows for optimal ripening conditions that yield elegant and full-bodied wines.
The Viña Cubillas vineyard is situated on 40 hectares along the Ebro roughly four kilometers from Haro, at a slightly lower elevation than the El Bosque vineyard. The vineyard consists of two plots: "La Encina" and "La Monja." Both vineyards are planted exclusively with red grapes, and the wines produced are classified as crianza.
Viña Zaconia, uniquely planted with exclusively Viura, lies on steep south facing slopes along the Ebro. The 24 hectares are on poor, stony white soils that yield balanced and concentrated white wines.
Today we are excited to offer a limited selection of special Reserva and Gran Reserva wines from this celebrated estate. In addition, we want to highlight the exceptional value of the Tondonia Reserva and Viña Cubillo Crianza bottlings.

López de Heredia 2010 Rioja Viña Cubillo Crianza
A blend of 65% Tempranillo, 25% Garnacha and small amounts of Mazuelo and Graciano, with three years in barrel and extended bottle age prior to release, the very good 2010 vintage has yielded a classic and satisfying Cubillo. Ripe, forward aromas of black cherry, with tarragon, leather, and peppery earth; the palate is initially quite juicy, opening with air to reveal subtle herbal and smoky flavors.
