Pépière 2017 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

This lovely wine clearly illustrates the difference between the granite and gneiss terroirs in Muscadet. Gras Moutons, a great parcel on gneiss with clay and amphibolite stones, produces lovely, classic Muscadet. A wine to drink over the next 5 to 8 years, it has a more herbal and floral bouquet than the granite-based wines and the palate, although refreshing and bright, is softer and more open.  In 2017 the majority of the grapes were lost to frost, but the portion that remained made a beautiful wine showing pretty herbal, citrus,  and white fruit aromas.  The palate is elegant and bright with pear, quince, lime-flower and lemon backed by silky lemony acidity and mineral flavors. Perfect with oysters, mild flavored fish and chicken dishes and goat cheeses.  David Lillie

Pépière 2015 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Ch.Thébaud "Morines"

The Domaine de la Pépière Château Thébaud "Clos des Morines" comes from old vines in a beautiful vineyard sloping down towards the river Maine. The granite here  (granite de Château-Thébaud) is fissured and permeable by the vine roots which have access to water during dry spells and absorb micro-nutrients along the way. The grapes are hand harvested, fed into the press by gravity and undergo a one to two month fermentation with wild yeasts. The wine ages "sur-lie" for 30 months with regular battonage, contributing to the complex aromatics and richness of the wine.  The 2015 Chateau Thébaud is a gorgeous wine, showing a bright pale gold color with ripe aromas of candied citrus, melon, pear, honeysuckle, wet stone, almond and licorice. The palate is silky and quite rich for a Muscadet, with white and yellow fruits, citrus and mineral flavors, with hints of anise and licorice emerging, with the firm acidity in the background. This very young wine is delicous now, but please decant or open well in advance. As with "Briords," this reminds me of the 2009, which is drinking beautifully in 2018. Serve with oysters and fish such as sole, cod and halibut, white meats as well, great with goat cheeses. Highly recommended!  David Lillie

Closel 2017 Vin de France Chenin Blanc "Belle Dame"

In 2017 Domaine du Closel lost 90% of their fruit to a devastating frost, but were able to purchase organic grapes from an estate on the other side of the Loire, on a great terroir of shale, to make this lovely Chenin. The wine shows ripe quince and pear aromas with floral hints, while the palate is ethereal and quite dry with firm acidity and saline mineral flavors under the subtle fruit. This will pair nicely with oysters and delicate seafood preparations, and should develop well with five to ten years of aging.

Baudry 2017 Chinon Cuvée Domaine

The lovely 2017 Chinon "Cuvee Domaine" from Bernard and Matthieu Baudry is all Cabernet Franc of course, a blend of 75% from a parcel in St. Louans, where the thin clay/limestone soils give earthy well-structured wines, with 25% from gravel soils near Cravant, giving supple fruit and freshness. Organic farming, wild-yeast fermentation, aging in 5 to 10 year-old wooden vats and casks. Tasted from barrel in February of 2019 the wine was quite pretty showing lovely pure red fruit aromas with a supple, ripe palate, very deep and long and framed in perfect earthy acidity. The palate is fresh and balanced with pretty red fruits, earth and citrus notes, really long and lovely. This will be a superb and unique Chinon, both to drink young and for cellaring of fifteen to twenty years. Serve cool with roast chicken, pork dishes, charcuterie, green vegetables and mild cheeses.  Highly recommended. DL

Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun) 2017 Côte de Brouilly

Jean-Paul Brun of Domaine des Terres Dorées has 2 parcels of 50 to 60 year-old vines on a steep section of Mont Brouilly with a south-east exposition at about 1,000 ft of altitude. Here the soil is all stones, mostly a blue volcanic rock rather than the granite soils prevalent in the Beaujolais. This is a gorgeous wine! Lovely aromas of ripe blackberry and bright fruits such as boysenberry and red currant, very floral with violets, citrus, cocoa and earth. The palate is ripe  but balanced (at 12.5% alcohol) with very sappy black and red fruit liqueur with mineral salts and citrusy acids that linger in the lush finish. (Note that the vinification for this wine is the classic Burgundy method rather than the usual semi-carbonic practised in the Beaujolais.) A beautiful Beaujolais for current drinking and over the next few years. Highly recommended!  David Lillie

Coudert 2018 Fleurie Cuvée Christie

Alain Coudert makes this lovely wine from two small parcels on typical Fleurie terroir of sandy soils over decomposed granite, in contast to the heavier clay/manganese soils at the Clos de la Roilette, which borders Moulin-a-Vent. The 2018 is a bright garnet/red color with vivid aromas of black cherry and ripe strawberry with violet, cocoa, earth and citrus. There is deep, ripe berry fruit on the palate, sappy and long, framed in grainy earth and citrus - showing the granite soils. This delicious full-bodied Fleurie shows the richness of the 2018 vintage but remains fresh and lively - drink this beautiful Beaujolais over the next three to five years, served cool, with just about anything!

Immich-Batterieberg 2016 Mosel Ellergrub Riesling

Gernot's parcel of the Ellergrub is 2.2 hectares of ungrafted vines, over 80 years old. Farming is organic, fermentation is spontaneous, and the wine ages in a neutral oak barrels. In a shocking twist, the 2016 Ellergrub is slightly off-dry! The wine boasts a floral elegance and herbal freshness on the nose, yet is still quite dense and rich, with notes of yellow apricot, roses, and white peach skin giving way to a touch of citrus zest and strawberries on the finish. Foradori 2016 Vigneti delle Dolomiti Teroldego

Foradori's Teroldego feels like a benchmark. Not that there is excessive opportunity to do comparative tastings of this lesser-known grape, but of the ones that we've tried, this wine is neither over-oaked, nor reedy and thin, but always perfectly balanced in its intensity and expression. A medley of brambly red and dark fruit (blackberries, plum) interwoven with dark spice, earth and green notes of blackcurrant leaf. The 2016 vintage is quite reserved when first opened, but some air reveals its true potential. One of my favorite pairings with roast pork. It's a great testament to Elisabetta Foradori and her family, and the hard work that has been done in the vineyards and winery for nearly 40 years, that this expression of Teroldego has risen from relative obscurity to be a true staple. Sorry, the Following have Already Sold

Pépière 2017 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Briords Vieilles Vignes

(Last of stock!) First produced in 1988, this great Muscadet is made from a three hectare parcel of old massale-selection vines (all over 60 years old, with a high percentage much older) on a slope above the Maine. The bedrock is Granite de Château Thébaud, a fissured rock that allows the vines to penetrate deeply, with ideal thin topsoils of clay, with sand and gravel allowing good drainage.)  The warm winter and early spring of 2017 in much of France brought early development to the vines, followed by a hard freeze at the end of April that killed the developing leaves and grapes. Losses were high in many parts of France, especially in the Loire Valley, and hot, dry summer weather further lessened the yields. Fortunately the quality of the resulting wines, is frequently outstanding as is the case with the superb 2017 Domaine de la Pépière "Briords." The harvest started two weeks early, on the 29th of August, bringing in ripe grapes with a lovely balance of maturity and acidity. The aromas are classic Briords, with white fruits, citrus rind, almond and stone with hints of white pepper and anise. The palate shows nice ripeness and density, a bit closed, with wet stone and citrus and very firm acidity underlying the tart white fruits. This is a tight and classy Briords that will need a decant if drinking young, preferably wait three to five years and drink until 2035(?).  David Lillie

Pépière 2014 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Gorges

We're exstatic to have this superb new Muscadet from Pépière. The product of an exchange of juice with Fred Lailler at Domaine Bregeon (pressed at Bregeon), the wine underwent a slower fermentation than at Bregeon, and was then aged 42 months on the lees. From Juliette Pope of David Bowler Wines "We tasted the 2014 Gorges out of vat, along with everything else, last January (2018) with Marc and Rémi, and it blew me away. Marc waxed quite poetic, declaring it his favorite of his bottlings right now, along with the Château-Thébaud." From Bregeon's vines on Gabbro with clay topsoils  (in conversion to organic) the 2014 Gorges is an austere yet dense and beautifully structured wine, with unique aromas showing almond, melon and petrol notes in addition to bitter lemon, stone and white fruits. The palate is dense with ripe pear and quince, earth, almond, anise and citrus notes, with stone, lemon peel and white fruits lingering in the finish. Although vibrant and delicious now, we would recommend waiting for eight to ten years before opening for peak enjoyment. Highly recommended!  David Lillie

Closel (Château des Vaults) 2016 Savennières La Jalousie

2016 is a beautiful vintage for the superb Savennières of Domaine du Closel. La Jalousie shows subtle, complex aromas of citrus peel, pear, almond, stone , lime-flower and honeysuckle which follow through on the perfectly balanced palate.  The fruit is lush and ripe but there is great acidity and minerality as well - the wine is elegant and very delicious in its youth, - serve with fish in sauce, scallops, monkfish, chicken in sauce and mild cheeses. Mosse 2017 Vin de France Le Rouchefer

The Mosse family is making superb natural wines in Anjou, and the 2017 Vin de France Rouchefer is a classic example. From a 1.6 ha parcel of massale selection vines in soils of clay and quartz over schistes, the wine is produced with minimal SO2 (total 20mg/l) and is aged in barrel. The  wine shows beautiful floral aromas of quince, pear, citrus and stone. The palate is full and elegant without being heavy, and the lovely fruit is backed by firm acidity and mineral flavors  - a real Chenin of terroir that will accompany a wide range of seafood and chicken dishes and mild cheeses. Serve cool, but not too cold, over the next ten to fifteen years.  David Lillie

Mosse, Agnes et Rene 2016 VDF Cabernet Franc

The 2016 Mosse Cabernet Franc comes from 40 year-old vines on schistes soils with clay and gravel. The soils bring a unique mineral character to the Cab Franc and the wine is bone dry with zero residual sugar. Not a fruit bomb, but quite elegant and long with earthy red currant and black raspberry fruit. Enjoy, served slighty cool, over the next ten years with a nice cut of meat...

Vins Contes 2018 Vin de France P'tit Rouquin (Gamay)

Olivier Lemasson was able to keep alcohol down in this warm vintage, and this wine clocks in at only 11%. Made from 40-year-old  Gamay vines (some of his youngest) and fermented semi-carbonically for 10 days, this is a beautiful and light expression. Both the palate and nose are driven by fresh and tart red fruit (raspberry, cranberry, pomegranate) and it's lifted up by high acidity and freshness. The palate also shows a slight crunchy minerality. A perfect chillable red. Oskar Kostecki

Vins Contes (Lemasson) 2018 Vin de France Poivre et Sel

90% Pineau d'Aunis with 10% Gamay, this wine is a beautiful bright ruby in the glass, with the nose and palate showing a wonderful mélange of red fruit, spice, and floral notes of rose and violets. The wine is fresh and mouthwatering, though there is some structure here, with the tannins quite apparent, but very well integrated.  Once again, Olivier Lemasson was able to keep alcohol levels incredibly low (11%) and overall this is incredibly pretty. A perfect way to start an evening, this is also a very versatile food wine, and it paired particularly well with soba noodle stir fry. Oskar Kostecki

Vins Contes (Lemasson) 2018 Vin de France R18

What started many years ago as a hodge podge homage to the Renault R12 (a notoriously unhip car from the 1970s) has become a delicious success for winemaker Olivier Lemasson, and his Vins Contés project in the Loire Valley. The blend is known to change, as it's essentially put together based on what fruit Olivier and his friends are able to harvest. This year, it's  Grolleau and Côt (Malbec). Very fun to drink, with red fruit and full flavor, balanced acidity and minimal tannin. A perfect red for heralding in the Summer.  Eben Lillie

Filliatreau 2017 Saumur-Champigny La Grande Vignolle

100% Cabernet Franc. The six-hectare Grande Vignolle lieu-dit sits on a chalk cliff on calcareous clay soils, set back from the Loire River on a high plateau. The vines are 35-40 years old and lie at the northern limit of the Saumur-Champigny appellation. The fruit is hand-harvested, destemmed and fermented with natural yeasts in steel tank, with a maceration of approximately 2 weeks. The wine is aged in steel tank and is bottled unfiltered. Always a juicy and delicious Saumur-Champigny, the 2017 Grande Vignolle shows ripe crushed black raspberry fruit with floral and earthy notes, quite pretty!  The palate is vibrant with firm acidity below lush berry fruits with a refreshing, bright finish. This is a great charcuterie pairing or with grilled chicken and pork and soft cow cheeses - enjoy it now served a bit cool and celaring of five to eight years would be interesting. David Lillie

Baudry 2017 Chinon Les Granges

From 30 to 35 year-old vines on gravel and sandy soils over clay and limestone near the Vienne river in organic agriculture. Hand harvested, fermented with wild yeasts, ages for 8 to 10 months in cement vats, minimal addition of SO2 prior to bottling. This "basic" cuvée from Bernard and Matthieu Baudy has gotten more and more "serious" as the vines age, giving a wine that is  delightful to drink young, but that shows surprising complexity and mineral character as well. The wine shows aromas of ripe red currant and cassis with hints of violet, citrus, earth, graphite, pepper and herbs. The palate is quite mineral with firm stony acids underlying lush, chalky berry fruits, and is beautifully balanced at 12% alcohol. Quite structured for "les Granges," this is delicious now, served cool, with roast chicken, white meats, charcuterie and mild cheeses and will imporve with 3 to 5 years of aging.

The 2017 Croix Blanc is superbly elegant with aromas of pear, white peach, almond and lime-flower. The palate is supple, with lovely ripe fruit, but also shows firm acidity and chalky minerals. Delicious now, but ten to fifteen years of aging will be very interesting. Serve with  fish or chicken in sauce and a wide variety of cheeses. David Lillie

This is a really lovely alternative to Champagne and a great value. Montagnieu is a village south of Cerdon, in the Jura, with premières côtes overlooking the Rhône valley. Peillot 2016 Roussette du Bugey Montagnieu Altesse

Another fantastic Altesse from Frank Peillot! The 2017 is radiant with vibrant yellow fruits from the sunny growing season. The texture is just waxy enough to hint to the golden honey years ahead of it with some bottle aging. For now, taut minerals usher the succulent orchard fruits and mountain herbs over to a long crisp and saline finish. Pair with pork chops, hard cheeses, or fried chicken. Amanda Bowman

Peillot 2016 Bugey Mondeuse

Though we generally love Mondeuse from each of its provinces, there is something inexpressible about tasting a bottle from the sub-alpine region of Bugey. That those industrious Frenchmen sensed that the limestone foothills would be perfectly suited to the variety long before the aid of computers or research institutes is uncanny; yet Franck Peillot's Mondeuse affirms those instincts hundreds of years later. The 2016 is seductively perfumed with red currants, pepper, and violets, aromas that belie the more rustic palate which is lithe but finishes with a tannic cherry bite. An excellent choice for charcuterie, sheep's milk cheese, or roast chicken. Amanda Bowman

Our favorite blend of sparkling Gamay and Poulsard is back in stock for the holidays! This charming, low-alcohol sparkler hails from the tiny appellation of Bugey (across the Mont du Chat in Savoie). At 8.5% this delicately sweet pét-nat is the breakfast of champions, companion while you prepare a feast, or the perfect solution to tricky dessert parings. The wine pours a pleasing shade of magenta in the glass and offers up vivid aromas of purple wild flowers, raspberry patch, and mouth-watering grapefruit zest. The palate is light and fresh with flavors of sweet strawberries, raspberries and crunchy blueberries on the attack then finishes with thirst-quenching mineral acidity. Busch, Clemens 2016 Mosel Riesling Trocken (alter) Native

Riesling with extended skin-maceration time can sometimes lose its footing, falling into the spectrum of 'cidery'. And of course there's a place for that, but it's very exciting to find wines that still hold onto the acidity and balance of fruit and minerality. Clemens has hit this note, with the 2016 vintage of the (alter) Native—we see extended skin maceration and the wine spends 15 months sur lie in large old German oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. Decant for at least a half hour to fully enjoy the subtle texture with notes of burnished peach, yellow apple, white blossom, balanced by juicy nectarine, green herbs and vibrant tangerine acidity.
