Look What We Found in the Cellar, Part 2! (Hommage a Jean-Baptiste Besse)

Share

Many yeas ago, when visiting Paris, I would occasionally need a special bottle for dinner with friends. I would go to Jean-Baptiste Besse in the Rue de la Montagne Saint-Geneviève and describe the menu and my meagre budget. He would disappear into the cellars and come back with something wonderful - once it was a Jurançon that was indescribably delicious, another time a Burgundy from a much-maligned vintage that was, of course, sensational.  As we continue to move the odds and ends in the basement into our new storage facility, and somewhat in the spirit of Monsieu Besse, we offer this selection of leftovers and "held" wines, mostly French - with a few old Riojas hidden at the end - in the hopes that you willl find something special. Don't worry , we always save some...

Beaufort, André NV (2015) Champagne Grand Cru Brut Reserve 375ml (D 12/18)

We're fans of the Champagnes of Beaufort for a number of reasons. The farming at this historic Domaine is impeccable and the winemaking is classical and refreshingly old school. The 2015 base Ambonnay Grand Cru in handy half bottle is a pocket-sized example of Beaufort's distinctive character.

Huet 2017 Vouvray Le Mont Demi-Sec

Le Mont is a 19 acre vineyard just above the Loire with a pebbly, "green" clay and silex soil over the limestone. The 2017 Le Mont Demi-Sec was the hit of our tasting at Racines NY, showing smoky mineral notes with pear, citrus peel, almond and wet stone aromas. The palate shows earthy white fruits with intesnse mineral flavors with great freshness and density, not showing much sweetness. The finish is long and earthy with quince, stone and citrusy acids. Serve now with very saline oysters or grilled fish, best to cellar, drink until 2050 and beyond... David Lillie

Clos du Joncuas 2006 Gigondas 1 btl per person (June 6)

What do we have here? Old-fashioned Gigondas? We are seldom fortunate enough to taste these.

Clos du Joncuas farms organically, vinifies whole-cluster in concrete, and does élevage in old large casks. The color of the 2006 is a bright intense ruby. The nose is floral, black-fruited, plummy with savory hints of animale and garrigue. This evolves into spicy and earthy notes without losing any sense of ripe-not overripe-fruit. There is good richness to the palate; the ripe fruit is at the forefront with a significant counter-balance of earth. Black pepper, violets, leather follow on the mostly-resolved, long finish. There is a hint of dryness, perhaps from the old oak, but no sense of austerity. Consider it refined rusticity.

Was lovely paired with grilled lamb and Borlotti beans.

Lionnet 2015 Cornas Terre Brulée

From parcels in Pied la Vigne, Mazards, Combes and Chaillot, with vines from 40 to 105 years old, certified organic. Wild-yeast whole-cluster fermentations, cap-punching by foot, aged in 2 - 8-year-old 228 and 600-liter barrels. Deep black-red color. Subtle, complex aromas of black fruits, violets, stone and musk, quite elegant. (This includes the last crop of Serine from 1919)  This is very much in the style of 2009, but a bit fresher, showing ample fat with cherry and blackberry liqueur with hints of earth, game and citrus. Beautiful old fashiond Cornas, best 2025 to 2035+  David Lillie

Sorry, the Following have Already Sold

Baudry, Bernard 2007 Chinon Cuvée Domaine

The grapes for this beautiful wine come from 35 year-old vines on both gravel and clay/limestone soils. As with all of their wines, the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented slowly with wild yeasts. Bernard and Matthieu do fantastic work in the vineyard (though not yet certified, they work with organic methods)and age this wine in old wood, both large cuves and barrels. Lovely strawberry/raspberry aromas with lush fruit on the palate balanced by refreshing acidity and chalky minerality. It's drinking beautifully now but will soften and develop for another 5 to 8 years. This is a great vintage for the Domaine cuvèe – only 50 cases for the year so don't delay.

Baudry 2010 Chinon Le Clos Guillot

Le Clos Guillot is a beautiful south-east facing vineyard, just east of the town of Chinon, above the Clos de l'Olive and adjacent to Le Chene Vert. The upper slope of the parcel is clay over limestone (the lower part has sand over the rock, permitting a tiny separate production from franc de pied vines) and the vines are young, planted from 1993 to 2000. We have been buying this wine since it's first production in 2000 – it's one of the most elegant and Burgundian of Chinons and in the 2010 vintage it has reached a level of quality putting it among the very finest reds of the Loire. Bernard and Matthieu Baudry are skilled, intelligent winemakers whose vineyard work and harvesting are exemplary, and whose careful vinifications seem to perfectly express the quite different terroirs of Chinon. The 2010 vintage in Chinon gave wines with a bit less alcohol and density than the excellent 2009s, but they have perfect acidity, great purity of fruit and a bit more terroir presence – in other words an excellent vintage, especially chez Baudry. The 2010 Clos Guillot is a deep red/purple color with astonishingly bright, pure and complex floral red fruit aromas. The palate is bright, pure and very long with slightly peppery red and black fruits. The Baudrys did a longer élevage for this vintage, 15 months in 3 to 7 year-old Burgundy barrels.

Baudry 2012 Chinon Le Clos Guillot

Le Clos Guillot is a beautiful south-east facing vineyard, just east of the town of Chinon, above the Clos de l'Olive and adjacent to Le Chêne Vert. The upper slope of the parcel is clay over limestone (the lower part has sand and gravel over the rock, which permitted a tiny separate production from franc de pied vines, now mostly deceased) and the vines are young, planted from 1993 to 2000. Fermentation in wooden cuves with pigeages, 15 months of aging in two to five year-old barriques. We have been buying this wine since it's first production in 2000 – it's one of the most elegant and Burgundian of Chinons. (Tasted twice from barrel) Beautiful red/black color with elegant aromas of blackberry liqueur, earth, violet and minerals. The supple, elegant palate shows deep black fruits infused with earth and saline minerals with great freshness and fabulous length. A beautiful wine. Needs five years, best perhaps 2020 - 2035.

Baudry 2012 Chinon Domaine

The Baudry Cuvée Domaine has changed a bit over the years, now made mostly from parcels in Saint-Louans on classic limestone/clay soils with the addition of juice from gravel terroir, giving a more structured wine that ages beautifully but also drinks well young. ("Chameaux" and "Molière" in Saint-Louans and "Clos Testu" in Chinon near Le Clos Guillot.) In 2012 the Baudry reds are low in alcohol, with lovely purity and fabulous mineral expression. It's an excellent vintage for the Domaine cuvée, showing deep black/red color with aromas of blackberry, prune, violet, menthol, pepper and smoke. Deep black and red fruits on the palate, very dense but relatively light at 12.5% alcohol and framed in cool acidity. This is really showing the terroir - a beautiful blend of graphite, stone and black fruits in the long finish. Lovely now in a somewhat austere style, this should be very interesting in five to ten years or more. (After three days re-corked in the fridge, the wine has fattened up with sweet blackberry and cassis followed by a nice mineral finish - really delicious!) Less wine is available this year so don't delay putting away a case! (Organic farming, natural composts, hand harvested, wild yeast fermentation, aging in five to ten year-old vat and barrel.) Baudry 2012 Chinon Les Grézeaux

One of the great red wines of the Loire Valley, the Baudry Chinon Les Grézeaux is from a unique parcel of old vines near the bottom of the slope in Sonnay (near Cravant-les-Coteaux) on a bed of gravel over a base of clay, sand and limestone. (Harvested by hand, fermented with wild yeasts and aged in 3 to 5 year-old casks.) Les Grézeaux always has an elegant silky texture and wonderful freshness, combined with the ability to age beautifully in good vintages. While not as "big" as 2009 and 2010, the 2012s at Baudry have wonderful purity and freshness in a medium-bodied frame that accentuates the beauty of the fruit and the underlying minerality. The 2012 Les Grézeaux has lovely deep blackberry and strawberry fruit with earth, musk and spice. Dark fruit compote on the palate with vibrant acidity framed by flavors of graphite and stone. Becomes deeper and velvety with a few days open — really a beautiful blend of fruit and terroir with perfect balance. Enjoy it now or in 25 years...DL

Beaufort, André 1996 Champagne Grand Cru Ambonnay Brut (Dis 11/18)

With all its nuance and detail, this nearly 23-year-old Champagne has the potential for wide appeal. On the edges it shimmers a more bright golden yellow and its core it rests a burnished golden color, speckled by a fine and discrete mousse. The nose offers aromas of honeysuckles, Granny Smith apples, hazelnuts, chestnuts, vanilla, and smoky tones. The palate is round, circular, and weighty with aromas of lemon verbena and wisteria before a mineral, singing finish. This combines so many of the best qualities of Beaufort's Champagnes : strikingly nuanced aromatic detail, along with a gracefully powerful palate and a resounding finish. (Lot #96A. Beaufort, André 1998 Champagne Grand Cru Ambonnay Brut (D 11/14)

The 1998 Ambonnay Brut has long been a staff favorite and this disgorgement does not disappoint. Brillliant, golden yellow in color and showing a finely-beaded mousse, this offers one of the two most expressive aromatic profiles of this current Beaufort lineup. Aromas of Mirabelle plums, toasted hazelnuts, and crème brulée transition to notes of Jonagold apples, cinnamon, and wild flowers. The palate is generous and expansive and carries tones of brazil nuts, greengages, and irises that crescendo to a fine, zippy finish. This is complex and delicious Champagne!

Bonhomme, Pierre-Olivier 2015 Vin de France La Tesniere (Menu Pineau)

Menu Pineau, also known as "Arbois" is described in Wine Grapes  (J. Robinson et al.) as "an old variety from the Val de Loire named after it's similarity to Gros Pineau (Chenin Blanc)...although it has nothing to do with the village called Arbois in the Franche-Comté." It is an offspring of Gouais Blanc, along with many other European grapes, and is "a little more rustic, but less acid than Chenin Blanc," according to Thierry Puzelat. The 2015 La Tesnière Blanc by Pierre-Olivier Bonhomme is from organically-grown vines, 75% Menu Pineau and 25% Chenin Blanc, in this great parcel that abuts the Clos Roche Blanche in Touraine. Bright pale gold color. Subtle aromas of grapefruit, pear, fresh herbs, stone and caramel. The palate is lean, with firm acidity and flavors of hazelnut, citrus, baked apple, stone and brown spice. A really fascinating wine and a great pairing with grilled fish with fennel, lemon chicken, aged goat cheeses and much more. Highly recommended to lovers of unique natural wines.

Coulaine 2015 Chinon Blanc

From Chenin Blanc vines near the Chateau on a south facing clay/limestone slope.  The wine is aged in small barrels. The 2015 shows a light gold color with complex aromas of pear and citrus with lime-flower and herbal notes and a touch of oak. The palate is round and supple with ripe pear, lemon, apple and herbal flavors. The finish is long and creamy with pear and mineral flavors and just enough acidity. Serve with fish in sauce, roast chicken, white meats and mild cheeses. Lovely wine. David Lillie

Guion 2010 Bourgueil Cuvée Prestige

2010 brings us another great Cuvée Prestige from Stéphane Guion in Bourgueil, whose domaine has been certified organic since the 1960s. From vines averaging 50 to 70 years old. Perhaps less dense than the superb 2009, there is a bit more brightness and balance in this lovely wine which features high-toned aromas of strawberry compote with floral, herbal and musky notes, with hints of  roast coffee and bitter chocolate. Intense material on the palate with bright strawberry and cherry fruits encased in brisk, very earthy acids. A brilliant wine that needs five years or more in the cellar, peak drinking perhaps 2018 to 2030. If drinking now decant well in advance or open/taste/re-cork three or four days beforehand. 1985, 1989 and 1990 tasted recently at the domaine were fantastic — given the low price, this is one of the world's great values to cellar. Thank you, Stéphane!

Guion 2013 Bourgueil Cuvée Prestige

From 40 to 80 year-old vines on clay over limestone soils around Benais in Bourgueil. Certified organic since 1965! In this difficult vintage Stephane Guion has made a superb Cuvee Prestige that can be enjoyed immensely in its youth or after twenty years or more in the cellar. Light to medium body, low alcohol and high acidity, as usual! Aromas of strawberry and red-currant liqueur, violet and black pepper that open to hints of coffee, fresh herbs, tobacco and roast meat. The palate shows firm acidity framing chalky berry fruits that linger with saline minerals and raspberry/red currant flavors. Just a lovely wine that is a great accompaniment to roast chicken, pork, green vegetables and mild cheeses.  Bravo to Stephane Guion!

Huet 2002 Vouvray Petillant Brut

(Note; The current Cuvée is the second bottling and was disgorged in the summer of 2009. There will be a third, no doubt more expensive, and final bottling, labeled "Reserve" in 2010) This Champagne look-a-like is toasty, biscuity, yeasty and full of apples, baking spices and pears. The mousse is so fine it tastes like it should be some $300 tete de cuvee from some huge luxury goods company . . .but wait a second its not. It's an organic, biodynamic, hand harvested, 4 years lees aged kick-ass value. Would love to stick this in a blind tasting of vintage Champagne.

Huet 2017 Vouvray Clos du Bourg Sec

A walled vineyard of about 15 acres, the Clos du Bourg is on the Premieres Cotes above the church in Vouvray. The vineyards date back to the 7th century. A great site with thin clay topsoil over limestone "tuffeau," giving powerful and well-structured wines. The 2017 is a brilliant wine that is superb now but will really start singing in about ten years. This young wine shows subtle aromas of white fruits, lime-flower and stone, very bright and vibrant; the palate is dense and all mineral and wet stone flavors with ripe, honeyed white fruits in the background. This wine begs for some serious seafood if drinking now, but best to wait... David Lillie

Huet 2017 Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Sec

Le Haut-Lieu is a 20 acre vineyard of limestone with a thick topsoil of brown clay giving wines supple and open in their youth but also capable of aging. Recent vintages from this important estate have been superb, with winemaker Jean-Bernard Berthomé creating superb wines even in difficult years. The 2017 Le Haut-Lieu Sec is a beautiful wine, showing aromas of pear, beeswax, anise, lemon cream and wet stone, for starters. The palate is round and balanced, with white fruits, stone, citrus zest and honeysuckle, finishing with silky fruit, firm acidity and saline minerals. Delicious now and for aging of ten to fifteen-plus years. Lovely wine!  David Lillie

This delightful Chinon Rosé comes from Patrick Lambert's 6 hectares of organic vines in Cravant, around the corner from his friend Bernard Baudry. Hand harvested from 20 year-old Cabernet Franc vines on gravel and sandy clay soils over limestone. The 2017 shows lovely aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry, citrus and rose; the palate is tart and pretty with raspberry, citrus and stone flavors with nice density and texture, with juicy acids, berry flavors and minerals in the finish. This is drinking beautifully now in a tart and refreshing style but will soften nicely through the spring and summer and will keep well into 2019. Pépière (Marc Ollivier) 2005 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Granite de Clisson

A dozen growers in the Muscadet who have vines on the granit of the Massive Armoricain have created the Granite de Clisson label to create a "Grand Cru" of Muscadet. This is Marc Ollivier's first release from this group, which comes from a 1.2 hectare (2 acre) parcel of vines 60 to 90 years old at the Domaine Pépière. The grapes were hand-harvested, (as always for Marc) and fermented with wild yeasts; the wine was aged on the lees for 24 months. The wine is currently quite austere, with subtle hints of exotic fruits, fennel and flowers, the palate is mineral, almost salty, and quite intense. Drink now with a grilled sole or wait a few months for it to open up, after which it should develop nicely for another 15 to 20 years. DL

Clos du Joncuas 2005 Gigondas Esprit de Grenache VV

This is Gigondas at its finest! 100% Grenache from old vines, fermented in cement, and aged in large oak vats before being bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal added sulphur. It gives you that classic Grenache mustiness – like blackberries and blueberries smashed onto the forest floor – but also more fresh and delicate notes of nutmeg and strawberries. Hints of grapefruit peel, vine tomato and pine offer added depth. Given its age, it is still incredibly energetic on the palate with wonderfully resolved tannins and ripe black berry fruit. Truly a complex and delicious wine with a long life ahead of it! Tim Gagnon

Texier 2013 CdR St. Julien en St. Alban Domaine Pergaud Vieille Serine

From 70-year-old Syrah vines located on the west bank of the Rhône on granite soils that had been farmed exclusively by a protestant religious order known as D’Arbistes. There has never been a chemical introduced into this vineyard. The wine shows conplex, earthy aromas of blackberry, rose, black pepper and graphite with animal and smoky notes. The palate is dense and sapid with blackberry, prune, citrus and earth with a long finish with black fruit and mineral flavors. This is a bold and earthy Syrah (?) reflecting the granite terroirs and M. Texier's superb farming and natural vinifications.  "The 30 months of aging in 2500 litre foudres have rendered (this) cuvée surprisingly approachable for such a classic vintage. The aging potential is exceptional." - Eric Texier. Decant or open the nightr before if drinking now, best perhaps 2022 - 2030+. DL

Bouland, Daniel 2010 Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes

From vines at least 50-plus years-old in the "lighter" Morgon lieu-dit of Corcelette. Although the aromas are somewhat forward, Bouland apparently insists that his wines are built to last. "...scents of violet, wisteria, fresh cherry, red-currant and smoked meat. Sweetly ripe yet vivacious fruit informs a silken-textured palate, while smokiness and salinity lend invigoration to a purely-persistent, downright vibrant finish" says David Schildknecht!

Coudert (Clos de la Roilette) 2010 Fleurie Griffe du Marquis

Alain Coudert's homage to his father Fernand is a superb Fleurie that will need three to five years in the cellar and should drink beautifully over the next ten to fifteen years or more. This is the same juice as the great 2010 Cuvée Tardive, aged in two to six year-old barriques and recently bottled. Tasted last February, it was quite tight and elegant, but  not "marked" by the oak and should become a profound bottle of Beaujolais. (Arrival MId-July)

Coudert (Clos de la Roilette) 2014 Fleurie Cuvee Tardive

From eighty year-old vines on clay and granite soil in Alain Coudert's beautiful Clos de la Roliette, just over the border from Moulin-a-Vent. By "Tardive," Alain Coudert implies that one should wait for this wine to mature, in this case probably about 5 to 7 years, although those unable to wait will certainly enjoy drinking it now. In the cavalcade of great Cuvee Tardives, the 2014 weighs in at 13% and shows a more weight and flesh than the racy and wonderful 2012, and a bit less structure than the 2010 (our favorite of recent vintages) and is brighter and more balanced than the monumental 2009. In other words, it's a fabulous wine that should be in the cellar of any lover of Beaujolais! The wine is a deep red/black color and shows fresh, high-toned aromas of blackberry liqueur, strawberry, violets, brown spice, licorice and grilled meats - really quite lovely. The palate is framed in stone and mineral flavors with firm acidity, with earthy dark fruits and an almost bitter finish of saline minerals and black fruits. This is a superb Tardive, very expressive of the manganese-rich soils and a lovely combination of beautiful floral/fruit aromas and a dark mineral-laden palate. Wait five to seven years, drink until 2030?

Coudert (Clos de la Roilette) 2014 Fleurie Clos de la Roilette

Alain Coudert seems to make terrific wine every year and the 2014 Clos de la Roilette is no exception. A parade of awful weather early in the year finally gave way to sunshine from mid-August through September, imparting lovely ripeness to the wines balanced by good acidity. Not as structured as the 2010s perhaps or as dense as the 2009s, but the 2014s offer juicy, delicious drinking now with moderate ability to age. This lovely wine shows deep black cherry, blackberry, red currant and violet aromas with earth, citrus and spice. The palate is round with soft tannins but nice acidity, with velvety berry liqueur, beach plum, spice and licorice. Delicious! Drink now or hold for eight to ten years...

Descombes, Georges 2010 Morgon Cote de Py Vieilles Vignes

Deep aromas of blackberry and strawberry confit with herbal and citrus notes continue on the deep but bright palate, which is complex and very long, finishing with fruit liqueur and good acidity. This is certainly one of the top wines of the vintage and will benefit from mid-term aging. (Last of stock — don't miss this beautiful wine...)

Desvignes 2010 Morgon Javernieres

Claude-Emannuelle and her brother are the seventh generation of winemakers at Desvignes and the domain was one of the first in Morgon to "estate-bottle" beginning in 1955. "The spirit of our vinification is between the Beaujolais carbonic maceration and a Burgundy vinification," she says. The parcel "Javernieres," on the lower southeast corner of the Cote de Py, is considered by the Desvignes as their best terroir. Here the thicker topsoil gives a more generous wine — the 2010 shows darker fruit aromas and has a rounder palate, more glycerin and weight but with plenty of acidity and structure. Three to five years of cellaring should bring out the best in this lovely wine, but we hesitate to say that it's "better" than the Cote de Py bottling.

Dutraive (Domaine de la Grand Cour) 2015 Fleurie La Part des Grives

This cuvée is from a late-harvest done in the parcel "Chapelle des Bois," collecting only a few grapes per vine one month after the normal harvest. A part of the small second generation grapes ("grismotte") are added to bring acidity and complexity to this extra-ripe harvest.

Guillot, Julien 2011 Chenas Cuvee Ultimatum Climat

Julien Guillot makes this lovely Chenas with purchased fruit from a friend working organically near La Chapelle-de-Guinchay. Blackberry, violet, earth and spice aromas. The palate is deep with blackberry, cherry, graphite and earthy flavors. This is really a complex and fascinating Beaujolais, made without added sulfites, bottled unfiltered. (The label refers to the "Ultimatum Climatique" signed in Copenhagen in 2009 to end global warming)

Lapierre 2015 Morgon

Matthieu and Camille Lapierre continue the beautiful work of their father, producing an elegant Morgon in the difficult, very ripe 2015 vintage. The wine shows lovely deep aromas of blackberry liqueur and earth lifted by hints of citrus, violet and mint. The palate is ripe and supple with plum, blackberry, earth, spice  and citrus. The finish is ripe, soft and lovely. We would recommend drinking this juicy Morgon, served quite cool, over the next five years, but longer term aging might be possible as well.

Pignard 2013 Morgon Tradition

Roland and Joëlle Pignard's  Morgon Tradition is grown on clay and silica over granite, aged in small old barriques and bottled with only 10 mg/liter of SO2. The 2013 is another excellent vintage for this wine showing a deep red/black color and lovely ripe aromas of blackberry, strawberry and violets - very perfumed with hints of chocolate and spice. The palate is round and dense with creamy blackberry fruit framed in fine acidity and ample round tannins. This is a gorgeous young Morgon, beautifully balanced at 12.5% alcohol. Enjoy now with steak au poivre or cellar for five to ten years. Highly recommended!

Terres Dorees (Jean-Paul Brun) 2010 Morgon

(From 40 to 80 year-old vines in "Grand Cras" — poor sandy granite soils, similar to Corcelette but with less moisture) Showing the character of the 2010 vintage, this is a lean, muscular wine with no fat and obviously built to last. Aromas of cherry and red currant liqueur continue on the palate which is medium-bodied with very firm acidity. There is intense material in the lean frame and very good length — decant well in advance if drinking now, preferably wait three to five years. This should be very interesting in 2020.

Terres Dorees 2010 Moulin-a-Vent

A very earthy wine with a rich and deep nose. On the palate there are lots and lots of red and black fruit, grainy tannins and an impressively long finish. Superb! jfr

Lafouge 2012 Auxey Duresses Rouge

This is one of our favorite, if somewhat unknown domains of Burgundy. Jean Lafouge and his son Gilles make classic, balanced, beautiful Burgundies at affordable prices and their village level Auxey-Duresses is always lovely and a great value. The 2012 is slightly riper than usual with lovely aromas of strawberry and tart cherry, with violet, rose, citrus and spice. Medium-bodied, with citrusy red fruits on the palate with great balance and refreshing acidity, the wine shows hints of earth and mineral that will develop nicely with time. Lovely now, and a great pairing with poultry, white meats and mild cheeses, best perhaps in 5 to 8 years.

Magnien, Stephane 2013 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers

Les Sentiers premier cru is located on the north side of Chambolle-Musigny, beneath the Bonnes Mares Grand Cru and between the Les Baudes and Les Ruchots premier crus. Medium dark robe. The 2013 Les Sentiers shows a nice balance between fruit and earth. Raspberry, violet, spices, with hints of game and herb on the nose. Dark cherry, black tea, and blood orange peel on the sappy, yet chalky, mineral palate. As befits the cru's proximity to Bonnes Mares, this is a more masculine expression of Chambolle-Musiginy. There's good concentration of fruit here, in addition to distinct terroir delineation; with still more to be revealed as the structure resolves itself further.  Decant now or better still, hold for 5 to 15 years.  John McIlwain

Rateau 2008 Beaune 1er Cru Les Reversees

From vines grown in the calcareous clay soils of Les Reversées premier cru toward the bottom of the hill in the center of the slope by Les Teurons. The 2008 shows the cool-toned precision of the vintage. The nose displays dusty black cherry and hedge fruit aromas with notes of herbs and wood smoke. The palate is overtly mineral and savory, with complex soil notes and crushed herbs giving way to more cherry fruit, red currant, orange peel, iron and spice on a mid-weight and persistent finish. This still has a bit of structure to resolve, but it is intriguingly sapid, and satisfyingly earthy. Best now with a decant, better still in 3-5 years. This would pair beautifully with hanger steak and shallots, pasta with wild mushrooms, or roasted guinea hen. John McIlwain

Vignes du Maynes 2014 Mâcon-Cruzille Manganite

From massale selection Gamay vines planted in 1952-53 in the estate vineyards, high on the slope in Cruzille, which have been organically farmed since 900 AD! Nine-day true carbonic followed by alcoholic fermentation in old vats. This is certainly one of the most beautiful Gamay wines produced anywhere. The 2014 Manganite is a dark red/black color and shows deep aromas of blackberry and boysenberry liqueur with earth, mint and violets with hints of musk. The palate is not at all heavy but shows intense blackberry, plum, citrus and spice framed in very firm acidity and intense mineral flavors. This lovely natural wine should be decanted a few hours before drinking and should cellar well for 10 to 15 years or more. It's a living, changeable wine from living soils and benefits from the Guillot family's long experience with no-sulfur winemaking. Only 60 btls available. David Lillie
