Wines from a small collection

Share

Our friend in the wine business has a tax bill they didn't anticipate (why do we keep hearing about non-1%'ers paying more tax this year?) so they are reluctantly parting with much of their lovingly collected wines. All guaranteed by us to be in good shape.

Sandri, Elio (Cascina Disa) 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo

Produced with grapes from east facing vineyards that would rarely produce distinguished Barolo, though the grapes are entitled to the denomination.  The plot lays under the woods at the top of the Disa property with vines planted in 1985. Fermented for 10-12 days with the classic submerged cap method in stainless steel, this typically ages for 4 months in botte followed by 8 additional months in bottle before release, though the most recent release was aged in tonneaux of chestnut, slavonian oak and acacia. From 2014 on production will increase with additional volume coming from vineyards that face southwest towards Perno. 2013: Subtle yet complex on the nose with nutty base notes topped with aromas of licorice candy, small wild cherries and bitter cherry compote. In the mouth this is rather smooth, with a rush of black fruit embedded in a lovely, softly textured wine that is built on wonderfully ripe tannins. Gentle and elegant, this tightens up slightly on the finish, gaining a hint of candied green fennel and sneaky length.  Lovely. Gregory Dal Piaz

Baudry 2012 Chinon Le Clos Guillot (wine stain from broken bottle

Le Clos Guillot is a beautiful south-east facing vineyard, just east of the town of Chinon, above the Clos de l'Olive and adjacent to Le Chêne Vert. The upper slope of the parcel is clay over limestone (the lower part has sand and gravel over the rock, which permitted a tiny separate production from franc de pied vines, now mostly deceased) and the vines are young, planted from 1993 to 2000. Fermentation in wooden cuves with pigeages, 15 months of aging in two to five year-old barriques. We have been buying this wine since it's first production in 2000 – it's one of the most elegant and Burgundian of Chinons. (Tasted twice from barrel) Beautiful red/black color with elegant aromas of blackberry liqueur, earth, violet and minerals. The supple, elegant palate shows deep black fruits infused with earth and saline minerals with great freshness and fabulous length. A beautiful wine. Needs five years, best perhaps 2020 - 2035.

Baudry 2014 Chinon Les Grézeaux

(Tasted in January 2016) From 50 to 60 year-old Cabernet Franc vines on a gravel soil over sandy clay and limestone at the bottom of the hill of Sonnay in Cravant. Aged 12 months in 3 to 5 year-old barrels.  The 2014 is certainly one of the greatest "les Grézeaux" from this wonderful estate! Beautiful deep red/black color, lush, complex palate of ripe dark fruit with perfect balance and fabulous length, with  cool acidity lifting the fruit. As always the "les Grézeaux" is enjoyable young as the gravel soil gives a wine with a silky texture, but it ages beautifully as well, as anyone with the 1989 can tell you. This is a must for any lover of Chinon!

Raffault, Olga 2008 Chinon Les Picasses

We love Cabernet Franc on Thanksgiving  and we love the Raffault "Les Picasses!" The Domaine Olga Raffault Chinon "les Picasses" is one of the most famous wines in the region - a wine that is delicious young but that cellars beautifully for ten to twenty years, even longer in a good vintage. Under the direction of Eric de la Vigerie and Sylvie Raffault, quality here has been maintained, and improved, with the adoption of organic farming. The vines averaged about 40 years-old in 2008, a vintage that was cool much of the summer but after a sunny and warm September the grapes were harvested on October 10th with beautiful maturity and concentration, combined with the firm acidity found in this vintage. The wine shows a slightly mature red/black color with aromas of ripe blackberry, strawberry and prune with, orange rind, earth and musk. The palate is supple and deep with ripe blackberry liqueur and hints of pepper, cocoa, licorice, earth and minerals. The finish is long and sappy with firm acidity. This great Chinon in mid-life cries out for a nice steak, coq au vin (or turkey!) or pork ribs. Drink now after decanting or cellar for ten to twenty more years.
