Baudry 2010 Chinon Le Clos Guillot

Le Clos Guillot is a beautiful south-east facing vineyard, just east of the town of Chinon, above the Clos de l'Olive and adjacent to Le Chene Vert. The upper slope of the parcel is clay over limestone (the lower part has sand over the rock, permitting a tiny separate production from franc de pied vines) and the vines are young, planted from 1993 to 2000. We have been buying this wine since it's first production in 2000 – it's one of the most elegant and Burgundian of Chinons and in the 2010 vintage it has reached a level of quality putting it among the very finest reds of the Loire. Bernard and Matthieu Baudry are skilled, intelligent winemakers whose vineyard work and harvesting are exemplary, and whose careful vinifications seem to perfectly express the quite different terroirs of Chinon. The 2010 vintage in Chinon gave wines with a bit less alcohol and density than the excellent 2009s, but they have perfect acidity, great purity of fruit and a bit more terroir presence – in other words an excellent vintage, especially chez Baudry. The 2010 Clos Guillot is a deep red/purple color with astonishingly bright, pure and complex floral red fruit aromas. The palate is bright, pure and very long with slightly peppery red and black fruits. The Baudrys did a longer élevage for this vintage, 15 months in 3 to 7 year-old Burgundy barrels.

Baudry 2010 Chinon Les Grézeaux

2010 is a great vintage for Les Grezeaux, perhaps even better than the superb 2009. Baudry's two cuvees on predominantly gravel terroirs, Les Granges and Les Grezeaux, seem perfectly balanced in this less-ripe vintage, and the old vines in Les Grezeaux have yielded a beautiful wine. The aromas are complex and lovely with floral red and black fruits, the palate is balanced, earthy and long with ripe strawberry, cherry and black fruits that are persisitant and balanced with a super refreshing finish. Les Grezeaux is a precocious wine, always enjoyable in its youth, and yet there is acidity and structure here that will allow long term aging, as the happy owners of the great 1989 – still drinking beautifully – can attest to. This wine is very highly recommended – it will bring great pleasure for many years and is a beautiful example of the great work being done by Bernard and Matthieu Baudry and family.

Bellivière 2011 Coteaux du Loir Vieilles Vignes Eparses

The Belliviere Coteaux du Loir Vieilles Vignes Eparses is a great Chenin Blanc, often equal in quality to the Jasnieres Calligramme. From 50 to 80 year-old vines on limestone with flinty clay soils, with yields of 25 hl/ha. Beautiful floral, herbal white fruit aromas. The palate is ripe and complex but with terrific acidity and mineral flavors and great length, Really a great Chenin that can be enjoyed now and it will age beautifully. Not inexpensive but very much worth the price...

Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2010 Bourgueil Les Perrieres

One of our favorite Loire Valley reds is the Pierre and Catherine Breton Bourgueil Les Perrieres, and we have been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the 2010. As opposed to the heavier and more forward 2009, the 2010 is lighter and medium-bodied, perfectly balanced with earthy, bright acidity and obviously built to last — a "grand vin!" From 70+ year-old vines in mid-slope on soil of clay and silica over limestone. Deep black/red color; elegant aromas of black fruits, earth and mint, subtle and beautiful. Intense fruit on the palate but not at all heavy — blackberry, red currant, black pepper, bitter chocolate and mint with a hint of oak, framed in cool acidity with a tannic structure that will carry this wine for twenty years or more. Powerful and complex yet balanced and elegant at 12.5% alcohol. This beautiful wine comes from the Bretons long experience with this parcel, their 30 years of organic and biodynamic farming and a masterful vinification and élevage, with minimal SO2, which allows great terroir expression and ageability. I will be putting this wine in my cellar, along with my 2010 Baudry Croix Boissee, and, if I can afford it, a 2010 Clos Rougeard, for a nice tasting in 2034! (Some details: Hand harvested into small boxes; 7 day cool maceration, wild yeast fermentation in oak vat without addition of SO2, progressively warmer over 15 days; no chaptalization, minimal extraction — one pumping over, no cap punching; aged in 10% new, 90% one-year-old barrels for two years with one racking; bottled after 2 1/2 years on a "flowering" day.) Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2012 Bourgueil Nuits D'Ivresse (No SO2)

One of our favorite Loire reds, the Breton Nuits D'Ivresse is a selection of old vines on a terroir of clay and limestone. The wine is vinified, aged and bottled without the addition of sulfur, preserving it's lovely fruit aromas. The 2012 has complex somewhat "sauvage" red fruit and earthy notes and a medium-bodied palate. 2012 is a lovely vintage for Loire reds with vibrant fruit and bright acidity making them great food wines — carafe, serve cool and enjoy with charcuterie, pork, roast chicken and mild cheeses...

Clos Roche Blanche 2014 Touraine Gamay*

This is the last vintage from our friends Catherine Roussel and Didier Barrouillet at the Clos Roche Blanche. In an effort to make these wines available to as many people as possible we are asking that purchases be limited to 3 bottles each of the Pineau D'Aunis Rosé and Gamay.  Catherine and Didier have had a profound influence on their peers in the Loire Valley and beyond, and have been an important part of Chambers Street from the beginning. Of course we will continue to visit them in Mareuil-sur-Cher but we'll miss having their beautiful wines on our shelves...

Huet 1996 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux 1er Trie

A great vintage for Huet's sweet wines — lacking the high sugars of 1997 but ripe enough and with perfect acidity which will carry them a long way. The Le Mont 1er Trie is just beginning to open up and would be great fun to drink now, but better yet, put it away for another 20 years and find a reason for living! 67 gr/l RS, 5.9 gr/l acid, 12.5 % alc. ("de très longue garde" says the Huet website!)

Huet 2002 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux

Huet's Vouvray "Le Mont" is one of the great white wines of the world, especially in the Demi-Sec and Moelleux iterations, and 2002 is a classic vintage for sweet wines in the Loire. There is an extraordinary balance between vibrant fruit, perfect acidity and a firm mineral core that makes this wine delicious now or in twenty years.

85 grams/liter RS, 12.8 % Alc 50% Passerillage, 50% Botrytis. A lovely, balanced Moelleux that will age nicely, peak drinking probably 10 to 30 years away. Yummy now if you can't wait, a great wine.

Huet 2015 Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Sec

Le Haut-Lieu—The original Huët vineyard is nearly 9 hectares. It has the richest soils of the domaine’s three crus—a deep limestone-clay—and the wines are generally the estate’s most approachable. In some vintages, small quantities from nearby estate parcels may be added to Le Haut-Lieu." 2015 Le Haut Lieu: 13% alcohol, 6 grams/liter RS, 5.6 gr/l acidity.

Huet 1996 Vouvray Moelleux Le Haut Lieu

Tasted February, 1997: "50 grams per liter residual sugar, 5.65 gr/l acidity. Big creamy, lemon, herbal, honeyed aromas, full on the palate with great acidity and length, perfect balance, will keep" Subsequent years have confirmed the unique character of 1996, a vintage with good ripeness but with very high acidity giving medium-bodied wines with superb elagance and freshness. While drinking beautifully now, this wine will keep for a long, long time...

Huet 1996 Vouvray Le Mont Sec

A great vintage at Domaine Huet. While the sweet wines have lower levels of sugar than usual, only reaching 60 to 70 grams per liter, the whole range of wines possess perfect balance and acidity giving scintillating flavors on the palate and fabulous length. Less open and expressive than the Haut Lieu when tasted in 1998, the 1996 Le Mont Sec showed great elegance and fabuous mineral/acid length with citrus, floral and stone flavors that lingered. This magnificent dry Vouvray should keep indefinitely.

Louvetrie (Jo Landron) 1998 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Fiefs du Breil

One case of this lovely old Muscadet is available -not a great vintage to be sure, but  a fascinating wine just the same and a testament to Jo Landron's great farming and natural vinifications. Open one to two hours in advance. Aromas of citrus peel, ripe yellow fruits, marzipan, almond and pepper. The palate is dense and full with ripe peach, stone, candied lemon, burned caramel and pear. Very high acidity combined with ripe mature fruit. A wine to sip with langoustines in sauce, monkfish with fennel, a full-flavored raw milk cheese...DL

Louvetrie (Jo Landron) 2004 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie Fiefs du Breil

Le Fief du Breil — a great hillside vineyard of clay and quartz stones over orthogneiss, tended in organic and biodynamic farming. 2004 is a great vintage for this wine, which we have enjoyed dozens of time over the years. The vintage in the Pays Nantais was better than in the eastern Loire as good weather held through the harvest, giving wines of excellent ripeness, but with a higher than usual level of acidity — the perfect combination for Muscadet! Re-Tasted in February 2016: Wow, a beautiful wine, packed with dried fruits, citrus, floral and mineral flavors, great balance and length, still young. 12% alc, unchaptalized, drink till 2030? We thank Jo for releasing a bit more of this super wine from his tiny stock of back vintages...

Louvetrie (Jo Landron) 2005 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Le Fief du Breil

From a superb hillside vineyard on orthogneiss with clay and quartz stones. Jo Landron's Fief du Breil is always one of the greatest Muscadet and although the 2005 is a bit less intense than the brilliant 2004, it's still a beautiful wine that's lovely to drink now - and it will improve over the next 5 to 10 years. Pale bronze color, vivid aromas of lime-flower, ripe pear, lemon confit, stone almond and earth. The palate shows stone, mushroom, citrus and white fruits backed by fresh acidity. Long chrystalline finish with citrus and saline minerals. This will accompany any seafood preparation including full-flavored fish such as monkfish and halibut...

Louvetrie (Jo Landron) 2009 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie Fiefs du Breil

From a superb hillside vineyard on orthogneiss with clay and quartz stones. A great vintage for Jo's Fief du Breil! Yes, the aromatics are a bit more pronounced than in more austere vintages, and there is more presence of citrus and white fruits on the palate, but the wine retains a superb mineral character and the finish is brisk and very long. Simply a great Muscadet — drinking this alongside the Pépière Clos des Briords would be a great lesson in the terroirs of the Pays Nantais! Tasted in February 2016, the wine is still youthful although the aromas are opening a bit, with intense minerality on the palate and fabulous length. Delicious now, this will be fabulous in 2025! Brisk enough for oysters and clams, perfect with cod, sole and flounder, complex enough for monkfish and swordfish - hurry down to Blue Moon Fish at the Greenmarket this Saturday!

Louvetrie (Jo Landron) 2010 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Hermine d'Or

A great Muscadet by Jo Landron coming from an organic vineyard on clay and sand over a sub-soil of gneiss, rich in iron and quartz and quite high in acidity. Kept on the lees for 12 months. Lime-flower, bitter melon and sea-air aromas, hints of licorice and citrus on the palate with bracing acids. Quite dense and long with an enormously rich expression of mineral salts in the finish. This will drink well young, with fish and shellfish but will benefit from 5 to 10 years of aging, when it will accompany richer dishes. Did we say that the price is ridiculously, even embarrassingly low, as Landron's great work deserves a much higher price...
