Côte de Nuits in April 2016 before the frost. Despite the difficult Spring, the vintage offers beautifully transparent Burgundies.

Hitsville MSD - Lignier-Michelot's Brilliant 2016s

At a certain point, when one reflects on all the wines they have been fortunate enough to taste, certain growers stand out for their ability to capture the character and quality of every vintage. Yet the best of these vignerons also offer their own signature to the wines much like a painter's signature is reflected by their brushstroke. Over time we await each vintage to see how the portrait comes together.

One of our favorite growers who seems to have an uncanny ability to capture the nuances of each vintage is Virgile Lignier of Domaine Lignier-Michelot in Morey-St.-Denis. Each year's wines are studies in precision, transparency, and detail. Farming is organic, though not certified. Fermentation is with native yeasts. There is some use of whole clusters. The winemaking regimen is tailored to the character of each vintage and cuvée. In short, the work of any good vigneron, Yet somehow the results are reliably transcendent. Virgile makes magnificent wines in good vintages, and lovely wines in the difficult years. (As beautiful as his 2005s and 2010s are, likewise you should seek out his 2004s and 2007s.) In the difficult, frost-limited 2016 vintage Lignier-Michelot made truly magical wines, with succulent pure Pinot fruit, soaring aromatics, and vivid terroir detail. These have impeccable balance and fine structure and should age effortlessly. Congratulations to Virgile on another fantastic vintage! John McIlwain

Lignier-Michelot 2016 Chambolle Musigny Vieilles Vignes

From 65 year-old vines. High-toned and floral with effusive aromas of rose petals, and black and red raspberry with hints of spice and earth. The palate shows good concentration and lift with succulent berry flavors, and a sapid earthiness on a driving, nervy, linear finish. Seems a bit coiled and in need of a fairly long decant or a couple of years in the cellar to unwind, but there's great lift and persistence to the finish and I suspect this will blossom with time. Lignier-Michelot 2016 Morey Saint Denis En la Rue de Vergy

En la Rue de Vergy, located above Clos de Tart and adjacent to Clos des Lambrays has thin top soils over limestone bedrock. Lignier-Michelot's 2016 has sweet, pure racy strawberry and raspberry fruit on the nose and palate with mouthwatering acidity and fine ripe tannins on a lilting, succulent, detailed finish. This is fresh, pretty, and displays great lift. Truly lovely juice! John McIlwain

Lignier-Michelot 2016 Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnières

Les Faconnières, planted in 1948, is located beneath Clos St. Denis. 50% whole cluster. This is always the most stylish of Virgile Lignier's premier crus with a good deal of the class of the grand crus. The 2016 is effusively perfumed with aromas of black and red hedge fruits, red plum, cassis, spicebox, and freshly turned soil. The mid-weight, concentrated palate is distinctly stony, with a ferrous minerality under-girding perfectly ripe, supple fruit and proceeding to an impeccably balanced and persistent finish. This is a satisfying, serious, albeit lovely Faconnières, which should reward cellaring for 8-10 years and drinking well beyond. John McIlwain

Lignier-Michelot 2016 Morey St. Denis Grand Cru Clos de la Roche

Like the rest of the lineup, the 2016 Clos de la Roche from Lignier-Michelot is a wine of nearly startling intensity and purity. The nose is redolent of spicy red fruits, violets and roses, and earthy game aromas with layer after layer of soil notes. The perfectly ripe palate is a mélange of sweet, ripe, pure fruit dancing above a deeply-pitched mineral core of fantastically articulate detail. I love the balance of shimmering energy and mineral intensity here that carries through on the long, sophisticated, rising finish. This has great class and will benefit from 10-12 years in the cellar and beyond. A truly beautiful Clos de la Roche! John McIlwain

From 50+ year-old vines in Les Bons Bâtons. The 2016 Bourgogne Rouge from has a medium ruby robe. The nose offers an attractive array of floral and red fruit aromas with pretty notes of wild strawberry and ripe wild cherry. The mid-weight palate shows good concentration with ripe red fruits and punchy minerality on a vibrant, mouthwatering, lingering finish. An excellent Bourgogne! John McIlwain
