La Spinona Barbaresco

Share

Older vintages of La Spinona seem to be something of a secret in the market. The same 2-3 customers snap them up whenever we’ve received an occasional bottle; They are very discerning buyers, so I’ve always assumed there was something special about the wines. Time flies, and I’ve had a chance to taste just a couple of vintages, but they have been fine examples of classic Barbaresco; you can't beat the quality : price ratio. So far as I know, all of the fruit for these wines came from the great Faset vineyard. For the first time we’ve been able to buy more than a few bottles at a time; these come from one of our favorite Piemontese cellars.

Daisy the Spinona

A Spinona is a Piemontese breed of hunting dog; the Berutti’s was so treasured by the family that they named their winery La Spinona. Daisy, pictured here, is ruler of my brother-in-law’s family. She is an excellent natural hunter (find, point, retrieve), and an all-around charmer. She did not grow the tomato -  her powers have their limits. Jamie Wolff
