Funny how vintage 2000 is all of a sudden... 18 years old. Some wines that now (surprise!) have 8-10 years of age (Sociando Mallet, La Lagune, Cantemerle, for example) should be drinking very well.
Beautiful scents of dark fruits — this is a great, powerful, full bodied and rich bottle of Saint Estephe with a core of iron. Very powerful wine, very, very fine.

Sociando Mallet 1996 Haut-Medoc
The Sociando Mallet estate sits at the northern end of St. Estèphe and sees some of the coldest weather in the region. Even in a warmer year like 1996 the wines stayed fresh and balanced, and today it is considered one of the best vintages for this Chateau. The vineyards are planted to 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and the vines are not green-harvested, as many other estates are, because they prefer the rustic, herbaceous note it lends to the wine. Fermentation occurs in a mixture of steel and cement, and aging takes place in almost entirely new French Oak for one year, with a small percentage aged in tank.
