Free-Seeking Electricity - The Galvanizing 2016s of Jean-Philippe Fichet

Share

Today we are pleased to offer selection of white Burgundy from a one of our favorite vignerons, Jea-Philippe Fichet. In a village seemingly overrun by top flight growers (Roulot, Coche-Dury, Lafon, Jobard come too mind), Jean-Philippe Fichet, has become something of an unheralded star. But the star shines bright in his immaculate cellars in Meursault. Old vines, fastidious work in the vineyards, and long elevage combine to produce some of the most detailed and elegant white Burgungies we've tasted. In the trying 2016 vintage (catastrophic frost, followed by rampant mildew), Fichet's herculean efforts in the vines resulted in wines displaying great purity, detail, and transparency, leaving one struggling to find synonyms for energy and tension. These are serious Meursaults (not to mention Auxey-Duresses and Bourgogne) with all the verve, terroir delineation, and minerality that Burgundy lovers adore. Happy hunting! John McIlwain

Fichet 2016 Auxey-Duresses Blanc

The 2016 Auxey-Duresses blanc displays a cool-toned nose with aromas of Meyer lemon, white flowers, crushed herbs, and white peach skin. The palate is racy and sapid with ripe citrus flavors buoyed by an incisively chalky minerality on a long, energetic, and detailed finish. Bracing and delicious now, this should really shine with a few years in the cellar. John McIlwain

Fichet 2016 Bourgogne Blanc

From vines located in Meursault. Chalkboard dust, apple blossom, lemon pith, and apple skin on the nose. Stony and broad on the palate, with mouthwatering acidity, yellow stone fruit flavors and a good briny finish. Good persistence and cut. This has a good depth and nerve for a Bourgogne. Cellar this for a year or so and allow elements to further knit and enjoy with roasted chicken, grilled sea bass, or even a lobster roll. John McIlwain

Bright, cool-toned, and floral, with a faint hint of reduction. The nose offers pretty aromas of white flowers (lemon blossom, honeysuckle), Meyer lemon peel, and rainwater. Frankly mineral on the palate, with a sense of pungent stoniness, giving way to ripe stone fruit flavors and a firm core of soil notes. This is ripe and pure with great precision on a vibrant, succulent, lingering finish. Great complexity throughout and a gorgeous village level Meursault! John McIlwain

Fichet 2016 Meursault Les Chevalières

Shallow limestone clay soils with limestone substrate. The 2016 Chevalières is positively incandescent. Lemon blossom, Meyer lemon peel, orange oil, sea spray on the nose. Great driving surf saline minerality and impeccable ripeness offering an array of citrus and stone fruit flavors on the palate. Pungently earthy and surgically precise. Incisively stony on the attack, with mouthwatering acidity and minerality, evolving into an expansive and galloping finish. Clearly young, and a bit coltish, but this has the nascent sophistication, complexity and pent-up energy to age for years. Absolutely delicious and a stellar Chevalières! Bravo, Jean-Philippe Fichet! Fichet 2016 Meursault Les Tessons

One of my favorites wines from the vintage and if anyone is thinking of a great gift for the Burgundy lover, this is a fine selection. The 2016 Fichet Meursault Les Tessons has a gold-green robe. Upon opening there’s a fair amount of reduction with aromas of citrus, ripe apple, and stone, which give way after a couple of hours to ripe orchard fruit, hazelnut, wet stones, and lemon curd. The mid-weight palate offers a firm core of minerality with fine density and pure, vibrant ripe fruit that offers a perfect balance of richness to accompany a deeply stony, palate-staining finish. This is a truly beautiful Tessons that should age effortlessly. I love Fichet’s wines, but this is truly beautiful and emotionally satisfying. I’d lay this down for 5-8 years and enjoy for the next 15-20. A truly fantastic Tessons and shows just how adept Jean-Philippe Fichet is in even hugely difficult vintages. John McIlwain
