Baudry 2019 Chinon La Croix Boissée Blanc

The 2019 Baudry "La Croix Boissée" Blanc is a superb glass of Chenin Banc! From 15 - 25 year-old vines at the top of the south-facing  vineyard where the eroded limestone is barely covered with silica. The 2019 has a pale yellow-green robe. The nose is a bit circumspect on opening. A couple of swirls reveal aromas of honeysuckle, soil notes, peach skin, green almond and beeswax. The palate is concentrated with savory, salty mineral sensations taking the lead, with flavors of white peach, underripe pear, and a hint of salted lemon following. This has a dry, mouthwatering finish inflected by flashes of orange oil, chamomile and sultana as after-aromas. The wine has a compelling stony core and should age nicely as the the structural elements knit with the ripe Chenin fruit over the next 10-12 years and beyond. If enjoying now, a 1-2 hour decant isn’t a bad idea. Quite tasty with a leftover chicken hash with plenty of chopped herbs, green onions, and a poached egg on top, but I’d love to try this with roasted cod fillet with a zippy salsa verde over braised greens. And to echo what David Lillie said about the 2018: "This belongs with the top dry Vouvrays and Anjou Secs - it's a unique and delicous expression of Chenin!" Highly recommended. John McIlwain

Baudry 2020 Chinon Cuvée Domaine

The Baudry Chinon "Domaine" is always one of our favorite reds from the Loire Valley and it's a sensational value as well.   All Cabernet Franc of course, a blend of 75% from a parcel in St. Louans, where the thin clay over limestone soils give earthy well-structured wines, with 25% from gravel soils near Cravant, giving supple fruit and freshness. Organic farming, wild-yeast fermentation, aging in 5 to 10 year-old wooden vats and cement with almost no added SO2. The 2020 shows a pretty red/black color with bright rim. The aromas are quite floral and bright, a pretty melange of boysenberry, black raspberry and tart cherry, very pure with hints of earth and pepper. The palate is supple, sapid and ripe and the tannins are round and silky. At 13% alcohol, the balance seems perfect. Firm acidity and mineral flavors are mostly hidden under the beautiful melange of ripe red and black fruits. This is a beautiful "Cuvée Domaine" that is sensational now, served slightly cool, and that will cellar ten years and more due to the firm acidity. We loved the rather brawny 2019 which needs a few more years to drink at its best - drink the 2020 while you wait but put some away as well. Very highly recommended, and thanks to the Baudrys for producing such honest and soulful wines. David Lillie

Bonhomme, Pierre-Olivier 2019 Vin de France Tesniere Blanc (Menu Pineau)

Menu Pineau, also known as "Arbois" is described in Wine Grapes  (J. Robinson et al.) as "an old variety from the Val de Loire named after its similarity to Gros Pineau (Chenin Blanc)...although it has nothing to do with the village called Arbois in the Franche-Comté." It is an offspring of Gouais Blanc, along with many other European grapes, and is "a little more rustic, but less acid than Chenin Blanc," according to Thierry Puzelat. The 2019 La Tesnière Blanc by Pierre-Olivier Bonhomme is from organically-grown vines, 75% Menu Pineau and 25% Chenin Blanc. The wine shows a bright pale gold color and is slightly petillant when opened. Subtle aromas of grapefruit, dried pear and apple, dried herbs, nettle, lemon peel, stone and caramel. The palate is austere and stony, with firm acidity and flavors of hazelnut, citrus, baked apple, earth and brown spice. A really fascinating wine and a great pairing with sushi, grilled fish with fennel, lemon chicken, aged goat cheeses and much more. Highly recommended to lovers of unique natural wines. David Lillie

Bregeonnette (Stéphane Orieux) 2020 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clos Coudray

Stéphane Orieux's father Joseph converted the estate to organic agriculture back in 1967, and Stéphane has continued the great vineyard work of this father. Clos de la Coudraye is a one hectare parcel in Vallet on granite subsoil with very old vines. The 2020 spent 18 months sur-lie before bottling. It's a lovely wine with ripe high-toned aromas of lemon confit, melon, dried herbs, white pepper and pear, a hint of smoke; the palate is dense and crystalline, a bit fresher than the 2018, with stone, saline, citrus, pear and anise flavors, with a lovely, creamy texture and meyer lemon and oyster shell in the finish, framed in firm acidity. A delicious classic Muscadet from granite soils, drink now or hold for 10 to 15 years. (A bottle of 2014 tasted recently  was superb!) Highly recommended!

Chateau Favray 2021 Pouilly-Fumé

Located in the north-east corner of Pouilly-Fumé we find Chateau Favray, an ancient farm with abandonned vineyards that was ressurected by Quentin David and family begining in 1981. The soils in this corner of the appellation are Oxfordian limestone of Villiers and hard grey limestone of Tonnerre with limestone pebbles and fossilzed shells and corals. The 2021 has great energy with bright grapefruit citrus, peach, white flowers and fresh cut grass on the nose. The palate is clean and focused with a mineral core and vibrant acidity giving a sense of power while still feeling light and pure. It's a wonderful value and would pair nicely with seafood or lighter vegetable dishes while being equally enjoyable on its own. Jeff DiLorenzo

Chateau Favray 2021 Pouilly-Fumé "Tonnerre"

The 2021  Pouilly-Fumé "Tonnerre" is from a unique terroir on hard grey linestone of Tonnerre, that gives a more structured and age-worthy wine. More textbook stylistically than the entry level Pouilly-Fume, The nose is less grassy and grapefruity and more mineral with a hint of mint. The palate is fuller and rounder while still exhibiting bright acidity and stony minerality. Drink this dense and vibrant Pouilly-Fumé over the next ten years. Giselle Hamburg

Chevalerie 2014 Bourgueil Grand Mont

"Grand Mont" is one of the greatest sites in Benais - a high, south-facing slope on yellow Turonian limestone with shallow sandy clay soils, rich in mica. Wines from this vineyard are built to age and this rare bottling from Domaine de la Chevalerie is a beautiful example. They started to produce it in 2009, and they consider it their grande cuvée. The wine ages in a one-year-old barrel and several older barrels for 7 months, bottled unfined unfiltered. 2014 Loire reds are superb - it was not an easy vintage for the winemakers, but the results were often fabulous, especially at Chevalerie, with a perfect balance of ripe black and red fruits with firm earthy acidity. The 2014 "Grand Mont" shows a very dark black/purple color with elegant aromas of black raspberry and blackberry with violet, earth, dark chocolate, citrus and game.  The palate shows silky tannins and complex red and black fruits - beautifully balanced with bright acidity and mineral flavours. This is really elegant and Burgundian, very long and built to last, really a perfect Bourgueil that will become a profound mature wine in ten to fifteen years - then drink until 2045 and beyond. Open the day before if drinking now, paired with a confit rabbit with cardamon & juniper served with roasted celeriac, or a coq-au-vin. 100% Cabernet Franc. David Lillie / Pascaline Lepeltier.

Closel (Château des Vaults) 2018 Savennières La Jalousie

100% Chenin Blanc. La Jalousie is a blend of several parcels of younger  vines planted in schistous soils on gentle hills. Like the rest of the Closel vines, they are biodynamically farmed, low-yielding and harvested by hand. They are the first of the estate to be harvested, when the grapes are pale yellow, crisp and totally healthy. The bunches are direct-pressed, then fermented with native yeasts and a small amount of sulfur in tank. The wine is tank-aged on its lees, without any exposure to air, for 9 months before bottling. Normally, Jalousie doesn't go through malo but in the warm 2018 vintage, it did so. Jalousie is intended  to be a modern rendition of Savennières: approachable  and fresh in its youth, as a result of not being over-ripened, botrytis-influenced or long- or wood-aged. An exuberant nose with aromas of lime zest, white flowers and herbaceousness. The palate offers flavors of zesty lime and bright pear with a crunchy minerality underpinning it's medium body and lively acidity.  Lithe and lovely!  Giselle Hamburg

Courault, Benoît 2020 Anjou Gilbourg (Magnum) 1.5L

Gilbourg is a beautiful Chenin Blanc, with fruit coming from several parcels. As our friend Pascaline Lepeltier explains, the core of this cuvée comes from the Clos des Mailles, which is an exceptional terroir near Benoit's home. She always finds there is nice flesh and mid-palate weight. There's ample minerality but it is almost hidden behind roundness and viscosity that develops in the mouth. It's much like the Petit Chemin in terms of approachability, but with a much longer finish and unparalleled depth. Bravo, Beni!    EL

Crochet, Daniel 2021 Sancerre Blanc

" Daniel Crochet has about 10 hectares of vines, a modest and manageable domaine. Of this, about 6 hectares of the vineyard are dedicated to Sauvignon Blanc, while a little less than 4 hectares are planted to Pinot Noir. The vines are in general located on the slopes around Bué, while some lie between Bué and Sancerre. The soils are a typical mix of Kimmeridgian terres blanches and Oxfordian caillottes. The work in the vineyards is organic. Daniel works the soil by plough, uses no herbicides or other synthetic chemicals, and he allows natural grass and other vegetation to grow around the vines and in the rows. He may apply a little organic compost, but that is the sum of the treatments he applies." winedoctor

Delmée, Philippe 2020 Vin de France Ch'nins on Boit 1.5 L

1.5L Magnum // This is the one Chenin Blanc that Philippe was able to produce from the 2020 vintage. Vinified in small barrels, and then aged in a large old barrel, this is a broad, 'leesy' expression. Very Anjou, with ripeness and mineral-driven sharpness and structure from the Schist soils. This firm mineral backbone gives structure and lingers long into the finish. On the palate, it has nice medium weight and density. A gift that keeps on giving!    -EL

Ecu (Fred Niger) 2021 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Granite

Guy Bossard is one of the heroes of French viticulture, having rejected modern chemical farming upon assuming the family estate, becoming certified organic in 1972, then progressing to Biodynamic farming in 1996. Guy has been an inspiration for many growers in the region and the estate continues under the capable and imaginative direction of Fred Niger van Herck. The Domaine de l'Ecu "Granite" is always one of the most distinctive of Muscadet, with the Melon de Bourgogne coming from 50-year-old vines in a parcel of stony soils on "granite a deux micas." This wine is outstanding with lovely aromas of white peach, almond, meyer lemon and stone. There is brisk acidity on the palate with ripe pear and peach fruit, almond and anise with intense mineral flavors. White fruits and minerals linger in the long finish. This is a lovely combination of acidity, ripe fruit and mineral flavors that will acompany full-flavored oysters, richer fish dishes, lobster, scallops, monkfish... Enjoy now and over the next ten-plus years. David Lillie

Filliatreau 2001 Saumur Champigny Vieilles Vignes

(Arives Jan 31) 100% Cabernet Franc. The vieilles vignes in this case are estate vines ranging from 50 to 100 years old and scattered across a range of parcels on clay-limestone soils.  The bunches are harvested by hand and fully destemmed for a long, slow fermentation with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks and a 10-day maceration. The wine is aged in steel for a year. Going back through our tastings with the young Frederic Filliatreau, we particularly ejoyed the 1995, 1997 (along with the fabulous Clos Candi!) and 2003 vintages, but we have no record of the 2001. A lighter vintage certainly, so we were very curious as to how the 2001 would show after 21= years. As is frequently the case in the Loire, vintages that are lower in alcohol and higher in acidity often age well and the 2001 VV is a good example - it's a lovely. light-bodied mature Cabernet Franc that is a delight to drink! The wine shows a lovely slightly faded rd/garnet color with aromas of rose, raspberry, sous-bois, stone, plum and tea leaves - very pretty and typical of old Cab Franc. The palate is light and pretty with surprisingly ripe berry fruits that segue into leafy, earthy, vegetal flavors, finishing with plum skin, earth and citrus - a lovely wine of contemplation. Decant off the sediment, then it's ready to enjoy, served slightly cool. DL

Filliatreau 2010 Saumur Champigny Vieilles Vignes

(Arrives Jan 31) 100% Cabernet Franc. The vieilles vignes in this case are estate vines ranging from 50 to 100 years old and scattered across a range of parcels, mostly in Chaintres, on clay-limestone soils. The harvest is 100% manual and is carefully sorted in the cellar. The grapes are destemmed and transported to stainless steel tanks. About 20 to 30 days of maceration between 24 ° c and 28 ° c maximum to preserve the fruit while allowing the structure to be expressed. We loved this wine when tasted in 2012 and it has opened up nicely, becoming  very complex and expressive, not quite mature but drinking very beautifully now. The wine shows a deep garnet color with aromas of ripe raspberry, cherry and red currant with blood orange, violet, ash and the beginning of earthy sous-bois that blends perfectly with the red fruits. The palate shows nice density of red and black fruits with a chalky texture, earth and mineral flavors combining with black fruits, a bit of tannin and firm acidity in the finish. Beautiful now and over the next 3 to 5 years, but I'm not sure it will age as gracefully as the lighter 2001.( It would be fun to find out) Great juice!  David Lillie

(Arrives Jan 31) 100% Cabernet Franc. The vieilles vignes in this case are estate vines ranging from 50 to 100 years old and scattered across a range of parcels on clay-limestone soils. The farming is certified-organic and is in conversion to biodynamics (on track for certification in the 2021 vintage). This new release of the Filliatreau "Vieilles Vignes" is a beautiful Cab Franc that can be enjoyed immensely now or in 15 to 20years. Bright black/red color with lovely aromas of ripe cassis, black raspberry, dusty stone, a bit of leather. The palate is lush and deep with a chalky texture and firm acidity beneath the black raspberry, cassis and black cherry fruit that is sapid, meaty and ripe. Long finish with dark chocolate, minerals, licorice, walnut and palate coating black fruits. Really lovely wine. Filliatreau 2020 Saumur Chateau Fouquet

(Arrives Jan 31) 100% Cabernet Franc. In the 1990s, estate founder Paul Filliatreau bought Cab Franc vines in the lieu-dit Château Fouquet, which lies in the village of Brézé, 10 kilometers east of the town Saumur (just outside the lines of the Saumur-Champigny appellation). Parts of the vineyard had been abandoned; he replanted with massale cuttings from Chinon vigneron Charles Joguet's Clos du Chêne Vert vineyard. By 1998, the vineyard had been converted to certified-organic farming; as of the 2018 vintage, Château Fouquet is Demeter-certified as biodynamic. From slightly different teroir, the Saumur always shows brighter than the Saumur Champigny. The nose is redolent with blackberries, cassis and that unmistakable wet clay minerality. A hint of herbaceousnes gives way to lush fruit, supple tannins and lively acidity. The wine definitely benefits from aeration as we revisited it the next day and all it's youthful exuberance had been smoothed out.The wine makes a perfect foil for duck dishes such as frisee with  confit gesiers and potatoes in a tangy vinaigrette.  Bon Appetit! (Arrives Jan 31) 100% Cabernet Franc. "La Grande Vignolle" is a single 6-hectare vineyard on a limestone plateau above a cliff along the Loire a few miles from the winery at the northern limit of the Saumur-Champigny appellation. The vines average 40 years old and the farming is certified-organic and in conversion to biodynamics. The 2020 shows a deep ruby/purple in the glass with a classic nose of dark fruit, vegetal spice and some earth. The palate is fresh and vibrant, full of blueberries, blackberries and spice with a dense mineral core and firm tannins that integrate further with some air. On day two it was even better, showing great aging potential but still delicious now especially with food - think roasted meats, grilled vegetables or hard cheeses. Foreau (Domaine du Clos Naudin) 2014 Vouvray Sec

"The 2014 Vouvray Sec from Philippe Foreau of Domaine du Clos Naudin lives up to the potential of the vintage. After pulling the cork the wine displays a pale straw hue in the glass, and the aromatics are wonderfully pure, with scents of orange citrus, lemon balm and smoky mineral streaks. It feels very bright and precise, with much promise for the future, but hidden within there are some little hints of exotic fruit ripeness, including mango and honeyed apricot, a reflection of the very benevolent vintage. The palate maintains this very fresh and tense beginning, showing pithy confidence and substantial energy, carrying a polished melange of mirabelle plum, sweet apple and citrus fruits. Following these first impressions it reveals a great textural presence, underpinned by a bright acid freshness, but also a very fine central core of pithy, delightfully bitter Chenin substance. This is hugely impressive, very long in the finish, clearly a wine of some gravitas, with great backbone and presence" thewinedoctor.com

Grandes Vignes 2020 Vin de France 'Cabernet Breton' (Cab Franc)

Yum! This is a very gulpable Cab Franc from the folks at Domaine les Grandes Vignes. This has very little tannin, and a healthy amount of acidity and ripe red fruit, so it's a shoo-in for the chillable red category. There's nice density and richness, which can be missed with some Loire Valley natural wines  (always good to have a medium bodied option in that category). There's a little Cab Franc barnyardy funk on the nose, but just pure fruit on the palate, so it's an easy fit for the dinner table, even for less "adventurous" palates. Grapes are destemmed, see 6 days of maceration, and about 7 months in barrel and another 4-5 months in concrete. During a tasting at the domaine last February, I wrote: "Nice, classic, very Anjou, with dark fruit."  -EL

Grandes Vignes 2021 Vin de France Groslot 1.5L Mag

"Groslot" (which loosely translates to "jackpot") is a humorous play on the name of the grape here, which is known officially as Grolleau Noir. The Vaillant family has definitely hit the jackpot with this wine, one of a lineup of reds without any SO2 added. Grolleau is a grape with plenty of fruit, ample acidity level and medium tannic structure, though the style here is light-handed and fun, so there is barely any grip to this wine. Really vibrant and fresh on the palate with crushed berries and a silky finish. Drink with a light chill! Alcohol is 11% and the style is very friendly and dare I say "thirst-quenching"...perfect for a holiday feast!

Guion 2018 Bourgueil Cuvée Deux Monts

From  70-80 year-old vines in "Petits Monts" and "Grand Monts" towards the top of the slope above Benais, facing roughly south-west, clay over Turonien limestone (tuffeau, craie micacée).  18-month élevage ; 40% in cuve inox, 20% in one new 400 liter barrel, 20% in one-year and 20% in two-year old barrels, assembled two months before bottling. This is the terroir giving the most elegant and age-worthy Bourgueils and 2018 is a magnificent vintage for this wine!  Tasted July 2022, the wine showed a deep red/black color and lush aromas of ripe cassis and black raspberry with hints of brown spice and oak. The palate is a lovely combination of ripe black fruits and bright acidity, dense and supple with graphite and saline minerals under the deep fruits in the very long finish. Forward enough to enjoy now, this will need time to unfold its mysteries and will be a very complex and beautiful mature wine, best to wait 5 years then drink until 2042 and beyond.

Guion 2018 Bourgueil Cuvée Prestige

2018 brings us another great Cuvée Prestige from Stéphane Guion in Bourgueil, whose domaine has been certified organic since the 1960s. From vines averaging 45 years old on thin topsoils of sandy clay over limestone (tuffau jaune) in Benais, a terroir that produces some of the most elegant and age-worthy Bourgueils. 2018 is a great vintage for Loire reds, despite the very warm and humid spring that brought attacks of mildew. The summer was perfect, warm and dry, without spikes of heat, and the soils retained enough moisture to bring freshness to the very ripe grapes. Tasted with Stéphane in February 2020, the 2018 Prestige showed elegant intensely perfumed aromas of red and black fruit liqueurs. The palate was complex and earthy, very calcaire, dense but not heavy with beautifully supple ripe red and black fruits, with a long finish of saline and mineral flavors quite present below the sappy fruit. We look forward to a more thorough tasting after the wine rests from its voyage, but it's quite clear that this will be delicious to drink as a young wine, and - although it may seem crazy to cellar a $17 wine for 20 to 30 years - those that do will be rewarded with a unique expression of this great terroir. I'm hoping to live to be 100 to have that experience myself!  David Lillie

The World's Best Value in Cabernet Franc is back! - This is another beautiful wine from the shy and affable Stéphane Guion who is quietly making some of the best wines in Bourgueil. His 2019 Cuvèe Domaine is from not-so-young (15 to 40 year-old) vines, mostly on clay/limestone terroir in Benais and is equal to the superb 2018 with perhaps a bit more brightness to the fruit. The wine shows a vibrant black/red color and lush aromas of raspberry and blackberry confit, dark chocolate and violets - very deep and ripe but still bright with earthy hints as well. The palate is medium-bodied and very fresh with firm acidity and chalky, saline mineral flavors framing the very ripe, chalky red and black fruits, which continue in the long sappy finish. Drink now, served cool, with grilled chicken and pork, charcuterie, green vegetables and mild cheeses, or hold 5 to 8 years for a velvety mature experience. The wines of Patrick Lambert have been a staple in our shop for some time now. His wines are classic, expressive, and made exclusively from his organically farmed estate. The 'Deuzelles' is selected from his 25-30  year old  vines planted on gravel, clay with limestone and silex, and sandy soils. The juice is fermented in concrete vats for 15-18 days, then aged in old barriques for 3 to 6 months. This is one of the best values I can find for excellent Cabernet Franc. This bottling is denser and more concentrated than the 'Gourmandises' but just as pleasurable and easy-drinking. The nose has notes of blackberry and raspberry bramble, freshly turned soil, and savory herbs, and the on the palate the wine is juicy with supple tannins. This was lovely when I tasted it on day one, and even better on day two, so if you have the time, give this some air before you enjoy!

Lambert, Patrick 2021 Chinon Rosé

(Arrives Feb 2) This delightful Chinon Rosé comes from Patrick Lambert's 6 hectares of organic vines in Cravant, around the corner from his friend and mentor, Bernard Baudry. Hand harvested from 25-year-old Cabernet Franc vines on gravel and sandy clay soils over limestone. The 2021 shows lovely aromas of wild strawberry and raspberry, citrus and rose; the palate is silky and ripe with raspberry, cherry, citrus and stone flavors with nice density and texture,  with juicy acids, berry flavors and saline minerals in the finish. This is drinking beautifully now and will open up nicely through the summer and into 2023. This is a fabulous value and highly recommended. David Lillie

Landron, Jo 2017 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Le Fief du Breil

Jo Landron's Fief du Breil is from a beautiful walled vineyard sloping towards the Sèvre, with clay, sand and quartz stones over a bedrock of orthogneiss. The vines average 40 to 50 years of age, the vineyard is certified organic and biodynamic and gives very low yields. In the dense and well-strctured 2017 vintage the wine was aged 30 months sur-lie. This beautiful Muscadet needs aeration or decanting, then shows aromas of grapefruit skin, pear, lime-flower, candied citrus and almond. The palate is perfectly balanced and intensely mineral - showing ripe white fruits, almond, anise and stone flavors with firm acidity and pronounced flavors of stone and saline mineral. This is a bit more forward than the granite and gabbro-based based wines - really superb as a young wine served with shellfish, grilled fish and white meats. As usual with great Muscadet it will age beautifully and pair with monkfish, lobster and aged goat cheeses. Very little was imported, don't miss it!  David Lillie

Le Briseau 2020 Vin de France Patapon Rouge

'Patapon' has a following of die-hard old-school natural wine fans, for good reason. For many of us, it was our introduction to Pineau D'Aunis, obviously along with Robinot, Tue-Bouef, Clos Roche Blanche, and Puzelat-Bonhomme offerings from the early 2000s (to name a few). This wine always has a medium bodied palate, a bit of a surprise for folks who think that Pineau D'Aunis is thin or juicy. Some are, but not the Patapon! Careful with the chill, as the wine becomes tight, tannic and neutral on the nose when it's too cold. Best would be to serve this at cellar temp and let it warm up. A very lovely Pineau D'Aunis with deep, round spicy red fruits and hints of white pepper.

Le Monde est Petit 2020 Vin de France Chardonnay

This is a fresh and friendly, direct press of Chardonnay, which is aged for 6 months in fiberglass tanks. I think of it as the perfect salad or grilled cheese wine. It is clean, unoaked, with subtle orchard fruit on the nose, crisp finish, a bit like what you'd expect from a Chardonnay mixed with what you'd expect from a Muscadet. Pleasant, stony and well balanced.  -EL

Legrand, Clotilde 2020 Saumur Blanc A L'Écart

The incredibly delicious Clotilde Legrand Saumur Blanc "A L'Ecart" is 100% Chenin Blanc grown on Turonien limestone soils in Saumur-Champigny. Hand harvested, vinification without SO2 (minimal addition before bottling) aged sur-lie in oval cuves and 2 year-old barrels. An absolutely delightful nose full of minerality, floral notes and tree fruit. The palate is dry and full without being lush; medium bodied with neutral barrel extract, vibrant acidity and more minerality and tree fruit. An excellent winter weight chenin without any heavy handedness, perfect for richer winter dishes such as Blanquette de Veau or Turbot Veronique. Giselle Hamburg

Luneau-Papin 2015 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Le "L" d'Or Granit Vallet

2015 is another very good vintage for the Luneau-Papin "L" d'Or, lacking the crunch of the 2014 perhaps, but still a very stylish Muscadet for current drinking and medium-term aging as well.  The wine shows complex aromas including pear, citrus and exotic fruit with anise and herbs. The palate is crystalline and long with stone and white fruits, really delicious, with a nice bit of crisp, bitter acidity in the finish. A good candidate for aging, this is Luneau-Papin's only cuvee on a granite subsoil (granit a deux micas) having a different character than the granite soils in Clisson or Chateau Thebaud. Vintages going back to 1989 of the L  d'Or are superb now, but this  very young 2015 would be perfect today with a filet of sole. DL

Luneau-Papin 2020 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine "L" d'Or Granit Vallet

2020 is another excellent vintage for the Luneau-Papin "L" d'Or in a ripe, dense style but with a bit more brightness than the 2019 that makes it a superb Muscadet for current drinking and medium-term aging as well.  The wine shows a fairly ripe gold color and complex aromas that are a great combination of ripeness and vibrant acidity, including pear, almond, stone, citrus and exotic fruit with anise and herbs. The palate is dense and long with ripe yellow and white fruits, almond and marzipan, really delicious, with the wine's unique granitic acidity hidden below, the sapid fruit. The wine remains a good candidate for aging -  it's Luneau-Papin's only cuvee on a granite subsoil (granit a deux micas in Vallet) having a different character than the granite soils in Clisson or Chateau Thebaud. The vines are approximately 50 years old and and are farmed with organic and biodynamic methods. Vintages going back to 1989 of the L  d'Or are superb now, but this  very young 2020 would be perfect today with full-flavored fish dishes such as halibut and monkfish or with lobster and even white meats in sauce. Morgat. Eric 2019 Savennières Fidès

"The 2019 Fidès is a pure, richly concentrated Chenin Blanc with huge power and attractive bitterness. A frost-affected crop, the low yields have packed a lot of interest in this mid-weight package with a firm line of acidity driving through the core. In this vintage, the pH is low, and there was no malolactic conversion, adding to that sense of power and direction. The long finish is almost salty. If I were going to be punched in the face, this is the way I would want it to be done, but you might want to wait for it to calm down." — Rebecca Gibb, Vinous

Nana Vins (Nathalie Gaubicher Heredia) NV Vin de France 'Konjo Fouzitou'

From Nathalie and Emile's vineyards in the Languedoc, this is a "kitchen sink" wine, a blend of red and white grapes that drinks like a Beaujolais, albeit with a touch of Southern spice. The white grapes here - Clairette, Terret and Grenache Blanc - are destemmed and macerated with whole clusters of the red grapes - Cinsault and Carignan. Everything is pressed afterwards and co-fermented. It's a harmonious blend, with no particular variety standing out, but all of them playing their part. There is pleasant weight in the mid-palate but all in all it behaves like a "chillable red," and would ideally be served cool.

Pabiot, Jonathan 2020 Pouilly Fume Leon

One of the very few domaines in Pouilly-Fumé to be certified organic,  with biodynamic methods as well, Jonathan Pabiot is making lovely, balanced wines with subtle fruit, firm acidity and good minerality in the finish. The 2020 is a blend of all three terroirs found at the estate: Kimmeridgian marl, chalky Portlandian, and clay-silex on flint. The vines average 30 years of age, and are planted very densely at 10,000 vines per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented with indigenous yeasts and minimal SO2 is used. This is a beautiful Pouilly-Fume showing a very pale gold color and subtle aromas of lime-flower, lemon zest, white peach and pear, wet stone and a hint of exotic fruits. The palate shows ripe stone fruits - pear/peach/apricot - with a nice core of minerals. The finish brings firm acidity and strong mineral flavors under ripe stone fruits, and has nice purity partially due to the minimal dose of SO2. A lovely wine that will pair with a full-flavored fish dish, chicken in sauce, vegetable soups and goat cheeses, and it's a beautiful aperitif as well.

Pépière 2020 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine s Lie Merci!

The 2020 Domaine de la  Pépière  "Merci" is named in gratitude to vigneron friends of Pépière who supplied finished 2020 wines for this special, one-off bottling that is helping to cover Pépière's 95% crop loss in the 2021 vintage. The wines come from sites similar to Pépière's, featuring variations on granite, gneiss and gabbro and from vines in transition to organic farming. The wine is a very typical, good quality Muscadet, showing classic aromas of white peach, lemon, almond and stone with a very dry, mineral flavored palate with pear and citrus fruit and a long finish with firm acidity and saline minerals - and it's an excellent value at $16.99.

Pépière 2017 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Cru Château Thébaud

The Domaine de la Pépière Cru Communal Château Thébaud comes from old vines in vineyards with great terroir on slopes overlooking the river Maine. The granite here (Granite de Château Thébaud, oddly enough) is fissured and permeable by the vine roots which have access to water during dry spells and absorb micro-nutrients along the way.  2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014 here were among the best of the vintage in Muscadet and the 2017 will stand out as well due to the combination of density and minerality with the very firm acidity of this very good vintage year for Muscadet - those of you lucky enough to have the 2014 in your cellar understand just what a special wine  this is. Notes from Remi Branger: "For the Château Thébaud 2017 - we harvested on the 2nd of September and did a longer elevage - 3 and 1/2 years sur lie, and we bottled it in the spring of 2021. We had thought to do a 4 year elevage but we realized that the exchange between the lies and the wine was occuring faster than usual. We have a beautiful Château Thébaud with aromas of white flowers and a touch of white peach; on the palate the density and power arrive in the finish which is less structured than the 2014 but is more structured and brighter than the 2015."  The 2014 Château Thébaud is one of my favorite Muscadet, though it needs 5 more years to really open up, and the 2017 is not far behind - perhaps a bit more precocious, thus beautiful to drink now or to age for 20 years. Pépière 2019 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Clisson Magnum

Beginning in 2005, Domaine de la Pépière has produced this cuvée from a small parcel of 50 to 110 year-old vines within the Pepiere vineyard. Originally called "Granite de Clisson" after the unique bedrock in the vineyard, Marc has changed the name to "Clisson" to agree with the new INAO Cru Communal classification. The granite is covered with gravel and clay with large stones, ensuring good drainage and deep penetration by the roots into the fissures in the bedrock, bringing the mineral elements indispensable to this wine. This note from Gwénaëlle Croix of Pépière: "We bottled the 2019 Clisson in November of 2021, after two years aging on the lies, as we always do. It comes from a hot, sunny vintage, thus the alcohol percentage is relatively high at 13.5%, but one really doesn't sense it. The palate is full and framed in very firm acidity and citrus flavors, with a slight touch of smokiness (un petit côté fumé)." The Pépière Clisson is always one of the most elegant, silky and ethereal of all Muscadet - don't miss it!

Pépière 2019 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Gorges

We're ecstatic to have another vintage of this superb new Muscadet from Pépière. The product of an exchange of juice with Fred Lailler at Domaine Bregeon from a tiny parcel of old vines on Gabbro bedrock with clay rich in quartz. The wine undergoes a slow fermentation and is then aged 42 months on the lees. (Marc Ollivier considers this a favorite of Pepiere's bottlings, along with the Château-Thébaud.) The 2019 Gorges is a complex, dense and beautifully structured wine, with  a bit more brightness and acidity than than the superb 2015.  The Gabbro terroir brings unique aromas showing almond, smoke and petrol notes in addition to stone, pear, quince and mushroom. The palate is dense and intensely mineral with ripe pear and quince, earth, almond, anise and citrus notes, with stone, lemon peel and white fruits lingering in the very long finish. If drinking young please give the wine a lengthy decant to release the unique character of this wine - best to wait at least 5 - 6 years before opening, then enjoy until 2042 and beyond.  David Lillie

Pépière 2021 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

Les Gras Moutons is a great parcel on gneiss, in layers that permit a deep penetration by the vines, with sandy clay and amphibolite stones. The vines are at the top of a hill and on the south facing slope overlooking the Maine. (The name, by the way, does not refer to fat sheep, despite their presence on the label, but rather in local dialect, to the hilltop vineyard site.) This terroir produces lovely, classic Muscadet to drink over the next 5 to 8 years."It has a more perfumed and precise style than the granite cuvées (in 2021), although the wafting aromatics of crushed chalk and white peach feel familiar. The palate has a nice tension though, with a polished richness countered by a chalky oyster-shell freshness, with a white-peach purity. It is pervaded by a fine grip, with firm phenolics, and modest acidity."

Pinon 2020 Vouvray Buvez du Bon Pinon

From the estate's website: "This is the renaissance of a cuvée created by my great-grandfather - a dry wine from our oldest parcel, planted in 1945 on soils of silex noir and vinfied in our oldest foudres - old 'tonneaux' from Porto purchased by my grandfather. We're using the label from the 1950s as well as the name of the cuvée - the famous 'Buvéz du Bon Pinon.' The fermentation lasted 2 to 3 months with only wild yeasts, which participate in the effect of 'terroir.' The fermentation was stopped by chilling the juice, followed by a soutirage, the wine then aged for 5 months in the old tonneaux. Aging potential of 15 to 20 years, serve with shellfish, oysters, cold fish, vegetable terrines, choucroute de la mer, rillettes and rillons." 7 grams/liter RS, 13.5% alcohol. This superb and elegant Vouvray is quite a contrast from the more open and expressive 2020 Sec. The "Buvez du Bn Pinon " is all elegance and depth, but quite closed, and just slightly opening on day two. The aromas are deep and creamy with subtle white peach, quince, earth, almond and stone, really needs time... The palate is dense and full with white and yellow fruits blending with earth, almond, anise and mineral notes. The wine is showing density and prerfect balance but will need many years to really emerge - like the Huet Le Mont Sec, for example, give it ten years before drinking if possible - or a 12 hour decant if drinking now. Of course it's delicious today but try to wait...  David Lillie

Pinon 2020 Vouvray Les Déronnières

The grapes for "Les Déronnières" from Francois and Julien Pinon (first made in 2014)  used to be included in the Silex Noir, but this wonderful vineyard, the Pinon's best parcel on a hill-top directly above their cellar, much deserves to be bottled on its own.  The very thin topsoil is clay with silex over Turonian limestone, and the beautiful exposure gives ripe fruit that is normally vinified as a demi-sec, but in recent vintages the RS level has been below 10 gr/l making it dry, in Vouvray anyway. The "Les Deronnières" shows a higher level of brightness and lower alcohol than in 2018 and 2019 giving a sensation of wonderful freshness and accenting the intese mineral character found in these wines. "A monumental freshness on an infinite palette of citrus fruits and quince in all its forms. Nothing less than exhilarating!" says our favorite French retailer "Vins Etonnants." Drink now or cellar indefinitely...

Roche Bleue 2019 Coteaux du Loir La Belle D'Aunis

The talented Sébastien Cornille is making some of the most beautiful wines in Jasnières and Coteaux du Loir - The 2019 "Belle d'Aunis" is 100% Pineau d'Aunis from old vines in clay with silex soils over limestone in the Coteaux du Loir; 15 day semi-carbonic maceration, slow pressing and assembly with the "jus de goutte" followed by aging in 3 to 4 year-old barrels. The 2019 shows a lovely dark red/garnet color and penetrating aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, and violet, earthy and deep, really lovely. The palate is dense and ripe with a bit of skin tannin, but supple and bright with very sapid black raspberry liqueur  backed by firm and refreshing acidity in the long juicy finish. (Eric Pfifferling meets Pineau D'Aunis?)  This is quite delicious and should develop nicely with age. Serve with grilled pork or lamb, a farm chicken.  Sébastien says "more structured than the 2018, with very ripe black fruits and hints of spice - it will become more harmonious with a few months  of aging, drink with red meats and spicy or Asian foods."  Highly recommeded! After one year, the wine is assembled in barrel or cuve and ages for an additional 6 months, followed by a minimum of 6 months in bottle before commercialization. The wine shows subtle aromas of almond, lemon verbena, dried pear, apricot and apple, chalk and stone. Thin red clay soils over limestone and deeper clay soils with silex giving yields of about 30 ha/hl. The grapes are harvested late to counterbalance the vibrant acidity normal in this terroir. The 2021 L'Orée de la Berterie is a bit austere when opened showing subtle aromas of anise, pear and stone that open up to include almond and citrus, quite bright and scintillating. A blend of Cab Franc and Grolleau, from 2021, a year when Sebastien felt a bit like the face on the label.'Tete a Toto' is essentially when you're so bombarded or overwhelmed that you temporarily forget what 2 + 2 is. With all of the loss of grapes due to climate related issues, Sebastien had very little wine he could make, and this very light-bodied but boldly spicy red is what he was able to put together in 2021. Probably the darkest and deepest of the Loire Valley Cab Francs we have in stock currently, this is perfect for that friend who loves Cab Sauv and refuses to try Cab Franc because someone said "bell pepper" once. This is a beautiful Cour-Cheverny showing the power and weight of the 2020 vintage but as always with great balance and firm acidity. The wine shows distinctive aromas of pear and citrus fruit, lime-flower, toasted almond and hints of spice, really quite lovely. The palate is scintillating and dry with citrus, pear, herbal, stone and nut flavors, with nice ripeness and density and firm refreshing acidity. The finish is very long, with mineral, citrus and pear flavors that linger on the palate. Perfect as an aperitif or serve with full-flavored fish and chicken dishes, Asian foods, and especially with mild cheeses like Morbier or Raclette, or goat cheeses from the Loire.
