Kögl 2020 Southern Styria Morillon

A lively, mineral expression of Morillon as the local Chardonnay is called hailing from the southernmost reaches of Styria right on the Slovenian border.  From extremely steep slopes composed of sandy limestone, the cool nights and terrain is very similar to Burgundy and excellent for Morillon.  From 35 year old vines showing good concentration, the wine spends 20 months on the lees in old barrels before bottling. Bright acidity and a faint whisp of smoky stones reveal citrus and green apple flavors. At an extremely elegant 12% abv, this is an excellent food wine and affordable alternative for Chablis lovers!. Kögl 2020 Styria Pet Nat 'Under Pressure'

A lively Pet Nat from the southernmost reaches of Styria next to the Slovenian border; Tamara Kogl's "Under Pressure" is made from Weissburgunder and illustrates, like her Morillon, how Burgundian her terroir is. From very steep slopes full of sandy limestone, her wines are biodynamic and burst with bright acidity, pure fruit flavors and minerality in spades. Perhaps the best characteristic is that they are never heavy handed and are always light footed, like an aerial acrobat flipping through the air from one trapeze to the next. An excellent aperitif for holiday meals and get togethers! Giselle Hamburg

Nikolaihof 2020 Wachau Grüner Veltliner Zwickl

This is, in essence, an unfiltered “Hefeabzug,” and you get two wines in the same bottle if you want. How? It’s fallen bright in the top one-third, and if you pour carefully you will have a clear wine. You can then shake the rest of the bottle to mix the sediment and pour yourselves a cloudy glass. They encourage this!

Nittnaus, Anita & Hans 2018 Burgenland 'Anita' Red Blend

Hailing from eastern Burgenland along the Hungarian border, Anita is mostly Zweigelt with splashes of Blaufränkisch and Sankt Laurent. Bright acidity lets the spice-drenched red and black fruits dance on the palate, and the wine—with only 15 milligrams per liter of added sulfur—bristles with energy. There is just enough structure here to keep the wine from feeling simple, underscoring  the notes of blackberries, blueberries, black cherries, cola, peppercorn and nutmeg. Lip smackingly delicious! Ott is considered an icon in the world of Austrian wines and is a major figure in the world of biodynamic winemaking.Am Berg is made from organic Gruner Veltliner grapes grown in loess soil.  The grapes are sourced from younger estate vines and purchased from growers in Feuersbrunn.  Natural fermentation in stainless steel, left on the fine lees until bottling in February. A delightfully zesty rendition, full of lip smacking minerality  with a profound wintergreen herbaceousness, leading to notes of lemon curd, green apple, white pepper and anise with a concentrated, long finish.  Bring on the Thai food! Pichler, FX 2019 Wachau Burgstall Riesling Federspiel

From a windy plateau above the Danube used to herd livestock as a fortification in the first settlement Liupna during the Middle Ages. The nose opens with assertive aromas of  white peach, faint petrol, orange zest, lime blossom, and a hint of pink grapefruit on a smoky, mineral background.  Pichler keeps things very traditional in the cellar and utilizes large, neutral oak casks to mature their wines. This one is salty and fresh on a medium-bodied, slightly glossy palate that’s boasting white nectarine, lime peel, flint, tart pear,  white pepper and grapefruit peel that gives verve and nerve to the entire wine, corsetting its ripeness with delicious citric acidity.   Perfectly crunchy acidity delivers a precisely layered and dry Riesling with classic Wachau grip and tension. Ripe and fresh but not green or vegetal, just grippy and refreshingly racy. A thrilling springtime riesling. Giselle Hamburg

Straka 2020 Burgenland Blaufrankisch 'Greenschist'

A delightful Blaufrankisch from Sud Burgenland near the border with Hungary. The 2020 vintage manages a fine balancing act between savory and plummy notes but will also be able to age gracefully due to the higher acid and the mineral notes imparted by the green schist soil type. An ideal red that can pair with a wide variety of foods!  -Giselle Hamburg
