Hardy Wallace (Dirty) says 2016 was a wild year. After several years of drought, some late spring showers gave the vines "a needed double shot of espresso to get them going." Early in the vintage, Hardy reported the fruit flavors were ripe and lively - sooner than expected. "This allowed us to take our time in the vineyards and patiently wait for acids and skins to come into balance."
After tasting the snappy and bright-fruited 'Familiar' Mourvèdre - a mosaic of California's Mourvèdre vineyards - we agreed with Hardy, this vintage is one of the "spiffiest" yet. Another standout is the heady and exotically-perfumed Skinner Stoney Creek Mourvèdre from El Dorado County. Upon opening, we were greeted with polite and pleasant red fruits, but after a long decant, layers of ethereal floral notes, savory spices, and mineral texture emerged along with the dutiful promise of age-worthiness.
However sophisticated, the 2016s maintain that ebullient spirit we love about past vintages, like a family reunion, but a really happy one. We are delighted to share these wines with you and yours. All of the quantities are last of stock and are available for pick-up and delivery. Amanda Bowman
Dirty and Rowdy 2016 California Familiar Blanc
A blend of 31% Melon de Bourgogne, 26% Chardonnay, 22% Chenin Blanc, 8% Viognier, 7% Riesling, and 6% Muscat sourced from Monterey, Mendocino, and Napa AVAs. The 2016 has a bouquet of lime flower, salty orange citrus and juicy stone fruit. The palate is rich and creamy but a cool mineral acidity gives an energetic lift that makes this fabulous for all seasons and with almost any dish. Recently we enjoyed this with fried shrimp tossed in chili oil. Amanda Bowman
Dirty and Rowdy 2016 California Mourvèdre Familiar
100% Mourvèdre sourced from vineyards in Amador, El Dorado, Monterey, and Santa Barbara counties (varies by vintage). 100% whole cluster fermentation with only native yeast used, this is a consistently generous and friendly wine with potential to evolve after a long decant. Fresh aromas of lush raspberries, tart cranberries, and mountain herbs deepen with black pepper, sandalwood, musk, and earth after a few hours. The palate offers some structure and crunchy acidity without being overly austere. We thoroughly enjoyed this with a slab of BBQ ribs. Amanda Bowman
Dirty and Rowdy 2016 Skinner Stoney Creek Mourvedre
100% Mourvèdre from El Dorado County. Fermented whole cluster with native yeasts, this vintage offers a beautiful bouquet redolent of sandalwood and baking spices, and ripe dark fruit flavors that continue to evolve over a couple of days. The aromatics are complex and bloom with crushed lavender, earth, and strawberry notes. The body is silky with an elegant dusting of tannins. Flavors of punchy pomegranate and red currant buoy the exotic spices and bitter cocoa powder notes on a persistent finish. Fantastic and lively on the second day. Amanda Bowman
Dirty and Rowdy 2015 Chalone Antle Vineyard Mourvedre
Antle Vineyard sits on top of a rocky slope where the heat-loving Mourvèdre grows on a block of decomposed granite and limestone at 1,700 feet in the Chalone AVA. 100% whole cluster, native fermentation, then aged in 5 to 8-year-old neutral French oak barrels and racked only at bottling, this is a thoughtful wine with deep character. Aromas of garrigue, iodine, and forest unfurl after a quick decant. Flavors of red currants, red berry fruit, bergamot, and savory spices round out the palate. Plenty of tannic structure to pair with red meat, but delicate enough that we ordered the red trout with mushrooms and it did not disappoint! Amanda Bowman
