Belluard 2012 Vin de Savoie Le Feu "Cepage Gringet"

From one of the Grand Crus of the Savoie comes this absolutely stunning bottle of wine made from the obscure Gringet grape variety. Dominique Belluard is one of only a tiny handful of people to cultivate Gringet, and even more notably, to make it into a still (usually they are sparkling) and age-worthy wine. These old vines grow on south-facing, incredibly steep slopes that feature red, irony soil on top of rock. Notes of anise and sour cherry on the nose, full yet delicate on the palate, extremely minerally on the finish with an intriguing note of tamarind. This wine is young; grab one to try now and a few more to age. MSB

Belluard NV Ayse Vin de Savoie Les Perles du Mont Blanc

Les Perles du Mont Blanc is made from biodynamically farmed Gringet and spends two years on the lees before disgorgement. Fermentation for the base wine is done with indigenous yeast; the second with Champagne yeast and there is no dosage added, making for an exquisitely dry wine with fascinating complexity.  This bottling is richer than in years past, but still intensely mineral with heady aromas of  pine forest, baking spice, and toasted walnuts. The palate is decadent, with creamy flavors of pear, wildflower honey, nutmeg and bright lemon curd. The invigorating acidity makes this a versatile, food-friendly wine to pair with roasted chicken, oysters, charcuterie, or cheese. Amanda Bowman

Buronfosse, Peggy and Jean-Pascal 2015 Côtes du Jura Poulsard Sous Le Monceau

Poulsard for turkey day? Yes, please. Thanksgiving is a feast, and at a feast you need wines that are versatile, light in body, and low in alcohol so that they can pair with multiple dishes, and so that you can keep on drinking throughout the day without feeling like you have a hangover before dinner is even over. This wine is all of the above, and will be perfect at your dinner table. Peggy and Jean-Pascal farm just 4 hectares of vines in the sleepy hamlet of La Combe below Rotalier, not far from Jean-Francois Ganevat, and have become known for their pure, clean, and compelling natural wines. They produce a miniscule amount of red wines at their domaine, so it’s always exciting when we see that some has arrived. Think lip-smacking, tart red cherries, a hint of red flowers, ample minerality, and a touch of Jurassic funk. This is a seriously gulpable and delicious wine. Tim Gagnon

Dominique Lucas (Vignes de Paradis) 2014 Savoie Chasselas de Marin

This was perhaps my favorite wine I had tasted while visiting. The Chasselas for this cuvée is planted in granitic soils with glacial morass definitively making it the most mineral-driven of his wines, but it doesn’t lack any of the opulence found in the others. Deep aromas of yellow citrus fruit still on the tree and a hint of honeysuckle rise from the glass. On the palate it opens with honey-tinged, creamy tropical fruit and bright citrus and gives way to a rush of minerals that lasts seemingly forever. All of his wines seem to build on the finish, but this is downright impressive. Tim Gagnon

Ganevat 2008 Côtes du Jura Pinot Noir Cuvée Julien

This is a decidedly Burgundian Pinot Noir that shows more resolution than one would find from a young Burgundy. The nose offers earthy notes of carrot and beets, straight from the ground, mingling with tart cherry, red currant, and sumac. Decant for best results. On the palate, all the small, red berries persevere, culminating in the mouth-coating combination of tannin and minerality that seems to typify many Jurassian red wines while allowing them to improve in the cellar for many years. -msb

Ganevat 2009 Côtes du Jura Savagnin Cuvée Prestige

This wine -- one of the few sous voile wines Fan-fan Ganevat makes -- sparked an interesting discussion at the wine store, culminating in the decision that we all really, really liked the wine. The question was: why buy this over Valdespino's Innocente, which delivers lots of flor for much less money. This wine, however, does not taste like a sherry. The voile character is supported by the same intense, high acid, dense, apply fruit one finds in Ganevat's ouillé wines. This is a beautiful bottle. The nose offers smoky notes as well as umami, walnut skin, and mustard seed, but it's the velvety, full-fruited palate clamping down with minerality on the finish that slays. It's not an inexpensive bottle, but the drinker is well rewarded. -msb

Gonin 2012 Isère - Balmes Dauphinoises Persan

Although the exact origins of this grape variety are unknown, the earliest mention of Persan was in 1846 in the department of Isère. This is exactly what has brought Nicolas Gonin to work with this variety. Nicolas farms 4.5 hectares in the village of Saint-Chef and spends his time between his own domaine and working in a nursery tracing the lineage of ancient grapes and trying to bring back the lost varieties of his region. Gonin’s Persan is harvested by hand and destemmed before it is fermented with native yeasts in enamel vats. With 8-10 days of maceration before pressing, the wine gains a lot of depth and beautiful color. On the nose it shows dark plum, pomegranate seeds, and blackberry compote. The palate shows more plum with white pepper and minerals balanced by a fresh acidity and supple tannins. While not necessarily full-bodied, this would pair well with heartier food this coming winter! Tim Gagnon

La Loue 2009 Arbois Chardonnay Sous Voile

This is a very striking sous voile Chardonnay from a tiny grower in the Arbois who learned winemaking (in part) from Emmanuel Houillon. The nose is deeply redolent of voile, the palate intense, round, and full of dried apples and rich, floral notes. It's an oxidative wine that will certainly reward a substantial meal. If you have time to prepare chicken with morels, we think this wine would set your dinner off perfectly. -msb

La Loue 2011 Arbois Savagnin Cuvée Raphaëlle

Catherine Hannoun eschewed her career in film to begin her journey to producing some truly wonderful wines. After learning the art of natural wine making from Arbois mavericks, Pierre Overnoy and Manu Houillon, she started her own micro-estate in Arbois. Farming just .8 hectares of vines, mainly Savagnin, she has been practicing biodynamics from the beginning. The result is gorgeous. Her Cuvée Raphaëlle spends another year in neutral barrique, which lends a hand to the wine being more densely perfumed and has incredible focus and depth. Salty minerals, honeysuckle and mango skin come to mind. It is an absolute pleasure to drink and is mouth-filling, fresh and has a lingering acidity. We are definitely excited to see more of her wines in the future! Tim Gagnon

Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) 2014 Cotes du Jura Savagnin En Quartre Vis

Although the 2015 vintage of this wine just became available, we wanted to highlight the 2014 as it is drinking beautifully right now. The Savagnin for this cuvée is sourced from a few different parcels, all of them vinified separately in neutral barrique before being blended together in stainless steel tank before bottling. It has all of the classic lusciousness that Savagnin can offer while also displaying wonderful purity and tension. This wine definitely has the structure to age well, as long as you have the will power! Tim Gagnon

Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) 2015 Cotes du Jura Chardonnay Les Molates

From a parcel of 35-year-old Chardonnay vines planted in limestone-rich soils, the 2015 Les Molates is pure joy to drink. All of their ouillé wines are vinified the same way: direct press into neutral barrels of various sizes for both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, and spend eighteen months on the lees before bottling with a touch of SO2. It opens with a luscious nose of orange zest, pineapple, juicy green apple, brown spice, honeysuckle, and butterscotch. Full-bodied but not flabby, it is saline and pure with a bright acidity. This is such a pretty wine, and was a standout at a recent lunch with fried Dungeness crab. Tim Gagnon

Marnes Blanches (Geraud Fromont) 2015 Cotes du Jura Pinot Noir

Perhaps a bit more ripe than last year, the 2015 Pinot Noir is a fairly fruit-forward wine with brambly red raspberries, Bing cherry, pomegranate, and hibiscus notes on the nose. On the palate it is dense with tinges of pepper and minerals, finishing with gobs of red berry fruits and dried red flowers. This is really a treat to drink now and over the next couple of years. Octavin 2011 Arbois Trousseau Commendatore

"What?!?" You say ... "Someone besides Ganevat makes a $40+ Trousseau?!?"  Made only in good vintages, the Trousseau grapes that go into this very special bottling are from the Corvée vineyard in Arbois. The nose is soil-y and high-toned, and reminded this taster of a cool climate Burgundy from a delicate appellation. Pale in the glass yet impressively mouth-filling, ripe, and layered on the palate, this is an extremely impressive wine that shows all the finesse and earthy minerality that make us swoon for the red wines of the Jura. Tissot, Stephane 2010 Savagnin En Amphore

The ever energetic and experimental Stéphane Tissot has begun to acquire anphorae. We think this is only the second vintage of anphora wine Stéphane has made and the first vintage was 2009 and higher in alcohol by at least a degree. This one is a reasonable 13%. This Savagnin is aged for three months on the skins in anphora then finished in neutral barrel with topping up. We enjoyed its spicy, exotic orange peel notes on the nose. Clean and well made and definitely orange. -msb
