Happy Thanksgiving 2023!

The 79th* Annual Chambers Street Wines Thanksgiving Email!

Share

Thanksgiving — the wine lover's favorite holiday, when sharing our favorite bird-friendly wines with family, friends and neighbors heightens our enjoyment of this most convivial day! And what do we look for in a Thanksgiving wine? A full-bodied white that will not only complement turkey, but stand up to the cranberry sauce, stuffing and onions; rosés (yes, rosés are a great choice on Thanksgiving) that have a bit more fruit and terroir expression than those we gulp in the summer; a few orange or skin-contact wines of course, and reds that are not too heavy - ripe and supple with pretty fruit that won't overwhelm the mild flavors of turkey, turnips and mashed potatoes. And of course a sparkling wine or Champagne to begin or end our feast, and dessert wines that will shine with pumpkin, apple and mince pies, walnuts and cheeses.

(* I know - we've used this date before, but we'd like you to remember that sometime in January we'll be moving to 79 Chambers Street - please look-out for our grand re-opening!)

This year we start our selections with our favorite Aperitivo, then onto bubbles, pear ciders, before sharing our favorite grape based bubbles. Next, whites, from food friendly Loire whites to dry and off dry Rieslings, Chardonnay and many other lesser known varietals. Our fondness for roses with harvest and Yuletide feasts is well documented, so we'd be remiss to not offer some thirst quenching, flavorful roses. We follow with reds, classics like Beaujolais and some like-minded, balanced reds such as a good Ribeira Sacra or Austrian option. The list is rounded out with some dessert wines and after dinner delicacies.

This year we feature Pear Cider! Jerome Forget at La Ferme de L'Yonniere is known as one of the finest producers of pear cider in the world and we are proud to offer his poiré (pear cider) at Chambers Street. From ancient high-branch trees in a tiny protecrted area, the heirloom varities produce subtle, complex and extraordinary ciders that will be a delighful discovery at Thanksgiving. Please see our article on Jerome for the whole story! Offered here is the superb poiré "Cuvée Domfront," please go to our website for Jerome's other poirés and cider.

** For those looking for big bottles for the table, keep scrolling after the dessert wines to find a treasure trove of Mags that will surely be a hit... as they say, everything tastes better out of a magnum! **

Our Thanksgiving picks are designed to please everyone at the table, from novice to Master of Wine, and to fit every budget as well. Have fun perusing our list and please call or email with any questions or for further recommendations. (Sorry, it's a bit too long...)

Most wines are in stock today, Nov. 11th, all others arrive by Tuesday Nov. 14th. Please allow an extra day for in-store pick-up and allow a few extra days for shipping in this busy season.

Happy Thanksgiving 2023 from everyone at Chambers Street!

Forthave Spirits 'Red' Aperitivo

The Forthave Red Aperitivo is a base of sugar cane distillate infused with 13 botanicals, and contains no artificial coloring. It has a beautiful deep ruby hue, and explodes on the nose with notes of orange, plums, chamomile, rose, grapefruit rind, cardamom, cinnamon, and saffron. The palate is viscous with a pleasant bitterness and balanced sweetness. Enjoy on the rocks with a dash of soda water, or in your favorite classic coktails. Makes a delicious Negroni. Oskar Kostecki

Pinon, François & Julien 2019 Vouvray Brut

This classic dry Chenin is the perfect sparkling wine for Thanksgiving! The Chenin's of Pinon are some of the best in Vouvray due to their impeccable farming, diversity of clay, limestone, and silex soils, and deliberate, albeit low-intervention, cellar work. The Vouvray Brut comes from 45 year-old vines that are hand-harvested during the first pass of the season. It is made in the traditional method with two to three years resting on the lees before disgorgement with a 6 g/l dosage. The 2019 Brut is a delightful wine showing elegant aromas of quince, pear, brioche, citrus and mint, bright and fresh, but with more ripeness and density in this excellent vintage. The palate shows an elegant mousse with superb density and weight, with flavors of white fruits, quince, peach and honey with firm chalky acidity, and finishing with white fruit, almond and mineral notes, quite clean and refreshing. Lovely wine, and capable of long aging. (Please serve in a white wine glass, not a flute, in order to enjoy the complex aromas...)

Pépière 2022 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Les Gras Moutons

Muscadet for Thanksgiving? Yes, if it's the beautiful, ripe and perfectly balanced 2022 Gras Moutons! Les Gras Moutons is a great parcel on gneiss, in layers that permit a deep penetration by the vines, with sandy clay and amphibolite stones. The vines are at the top of a hill and on the south facing slope overlooking the Maine. (The name, by the way, does not refer to fat sheep, despite their presence on the label, but rather in local dialect, to the hilltop vineyard site.) This terroir produces lovely, classic Muscadet to drink young or after short-term cellaring of 5 to 10 years. The 2022 shows a bright very pale gold color. The nose is subtle but complex with a lovely melange of peach, pear, melon, lemon verbena, dried herbs and wet stone. The palate is marked by a nice bitter minerality underlying white fruits and citrus flavors. The finish is pure, clean and refreshing, perfectly balanced at 12% alcohol. This is a lovely Muscadet to enjoy with shellfish, fish and chips, fish in sauce and white meats over the next 10 years. Try to save a few - we're drinking the last of our 2018s which are fantastic...! David Lillie

Rateau 2022 Cote de Beaune La Grande Chatelaine

About a kilometer or two northwest of the Beaune 1er Crus, La Grande Chatelaine is a cooler site with soils comprised of clay over limestone. The 2022 Clos de la Grande Chatelain is 90% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Blanc and Pinot Beurot. This is a great vintage for the Grande Chatelaine - it's classy and elegant wine with fresh cool-toned aromatics of white flowers,  nectarine, rainwater,  and pear skin. The medium-bodied palate is a little warmer toned offering flavors of nectarine, white peach, and crushed herb with a fairly savory finish. Beautiful wine, and a very elegant pairing with any elegant seafood or white meat preparation.

Domaine de Lorient 2021 Saint-Peray Saute Mouton

The Saute-Mouton is the second white that was produced at Domaine de Lorient, highlighting a larger percentage of Marsanne. There is an immediately enticing nose on opening, with notes of orange marmalade and fresh ginger. The wine has medium weight, perhaps a similar level of roundness on the palate to their other Saint-Peray white (which is majority Roussanne), but this has a noticeably more pronounced sharpness and herbaceous character, which is to be expected with Marsanne playing the starring role. I kept thinking about what it reminded me of, and realized it had a striking resemblance to some Silvaners I've had from Holger Koch or Stefan Vetter! A beautiful and quite addictive wine, that plays inside and outside of the Northern-Rhone white category. -EL

Guion 2021 Bourgueil Rosé

The 2021 Guion Bourgueil Rosé shows plenty of minerality, with stone fruit, a hint of spring strawberries (think more tart, less fruity), tangerine, and spice. This is a very complex dry rosé, showing earthy red fruits and stone flavors that are still developing in its second year. Really tastes of the limestone terroir and the Guion's 50 years of organic farming, with a long finish and ample acidity and freshness. Thanks to Stéphane for another great vintage of his super-refreshing Rosé!

Roche Bleue 2022 Coteaux du Loir La Guinguette

Sébastien Cornille's lovely 2022 "Guinguette" is made principally from Pineau d’Aunis, with Gamay, sourced from 30+year-old vines in organic/biodynamic farming. Fairly short maceration, native yeasts, semi-carbonic fermentation of whole bunches and destemmed grapes according to the “millefeuille” principle. The 2022 Guinguette is a superb "vin de soif" offering bright aromas of peppery raspberry, cherry and violets, quite ripe and generous in this warm vintage. The palate shows light but sappy raspberry, plum and red currant fruit with chalky minerals, spice and citrus. The finish is long and refreshing. Serve this lovely wine slightly chilled with charcuterie, of course, grilled pork and lamb, bluefish (?) and mild cow cheeses.  David Lillie  Surprisingly vibrant and bright aciditity for such a warm vintage, showing a fruity nose of berries and cherries with baking spice and a lively body with crunchy cherries and zesty currants. Exactly the kind of wine to drink on a riverside barge whilst dancing to accordion music and nibling on cheese and charcuterie... a French Guinguette! Giselle Hamburg

Chevalerie 2014 Bourgueil Bretêche

(In the fall of 2023, this wine is really singing and will be wonderful for Thanksgiving!) Bretêche (Domaine de la Chevalerie is the only estate claiming this vineyard name) is the easternmost vineyard, a rented plot on the border of Ingrandes-de-Touraine. On the southwestern exposed upper part of the mid-slope, the vines are planted on a meter-deep heavier clay with high mica content above the Turonian yellow tuffeau. The vines, biodynamically farmed, are between 25 to 55 years old. More powerful than Busardières with broader tannins, the wine maintains a great freshness. Hand-harvested and destemmed, the grapes are macerated for up to 20 days and aged in large used barrels in the magnificent underground cave dug into the yellow tuffeau for roughly 8 to 10 moths. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered.  2014 is considered a great classic vintage in the Loire for Cabernet Franc, and it is indeed very good at Domaine de la Chevalerie, with fruit a little darker than the 2015 (this opposite to a lot of other estates in the region).  Ruby purple in the glass this cuvée as usual has more freshness, tension and a little austerity - 2014 enhances these typical quality of the wine! More open than the 2015, the nose has distinctive black cherry,  elderberry notes, Chinese badiane and spearmint. The palate is still deliciously youthful barely showing any evolution, with lean and brilliant acidity, and oolong-like tannins. It is already very-well structured and poised, not angular at all. Decant it 2 hours and serve it in Bordeaux glasses, or keep it 20 years or so - I would say it will reach another plateau by 2025. Enjoy it with a duck magret, the juice reduced with a touch of raspberry vinegar, or sweetbreads in a madeira sauce. 100% Cabernet Franc. Pascaline Lepeltier

Thorle 2020 Rheinhessen Saulheimer Trocken Spätburgunder

Thorle is a 16th century estate in the center of the Rheinehessen, under new ownership of the Thorle brothers since 2006 who have converted the estate to being Certified Organic as of 2022. The estate is comprised of  three vineyards on a mix of limestone and clay with loess top soils. All wines are unfiltered, gravity clarified, barrel-aged and bottled with minimal SO2. Their Spatburgunder is serious and dark fruited; spontaneously fermented on the skins for 3-4 weeks with frequent punch downs, aged in french oak for 20 months and bottled unfiltered.

Chateau Brandeau 2021 Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux "Banzai"

Banzai is a tasty, pure Merlot expression from clay and limestone soils in Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux. The grapes are carefully destemmed and see a short and light maceration for 7-8 days, in what is called 'infusion style,' meaning there is no pumping over or any kind of aggressive agitation of the skins and juice, which are allowed to ferment with less extraction (less grippy tannins). It's Merlot, so it's ripe enough and has plenty of material to maintain an ideal medium-bodied expression, but it's also light in a way, not in the glass necessarily but on the palate and in terms of drinkability. No intervention during fermentation or aging, with small addition of SO2 at bottling.

Texier 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

The 2020 Texier CDP Vieilles Vignes is 100% Grenache from 80+ year-old vines on alluvial gravel of glacial origin called ‘galets roulés’ on the northern slopes of "la Crau." The wine shows a bright red/black color and astonishing aromas of violet, red currant and crushed raspberry over deep plum liqueur, just beautiful. The palate is lush and supple with bright acidity, with gorgeous round red and black fruits that coat the mouth and linger on the long finish with firm acidity, citrus, earth and mineral notes under the exuberant fruit. On day two, more typical notes of garrigue and black cherry emerge... Like a great red Burgundy made with Grenache, pair it with an elegant cuisine (or drink it for breakfast). Long term aging is certainly possible, but we recommend drinking it now, without restraint... DL  "2020 Chateauneuf rouge : reminds me of 2000. In one word : balance. Between fruit and structure, acidity and roundness, aromatic expression and aging potential. This wine pleases me a lot. Unusual lately... Harvested late September under perfect conditions. Whole cluster of course, 18 months in demi muids. A tiny bit of grenache blanc in it, since we forgot to harvest 2 rows when we did the whites! 1956 bottles and 24 magnums." Eric Texier

I Fabbri 2019 Chianti Classico Lamole Fiasco

We couldn't resist including the famou Fiasco bottle, which happens to have great wine inside, and also makes for a fun conversation piece on the table with the Thanksgiving feast! The old school 'Fiasco' was a large bottle wrapped in straw, perhaps originally of a much larger size, like a damijon but in this iteration, a more manageable 1 liter. I Fabbri's Fiasco bottling is an incredibly bright Sangiovese from one of our favorite Chianti producers. The nose of this fresh red is full of wild fruits - cherries, strawberries, and blueberries. Lending a rustic accent is a pleasant aroma of savory green herbs. Flavors of black cherry and dark stones create a bright palate with a healthy level of high-toned verve. Great acidity and a light hint of tannin round out this delicious (and dangerously drinkable) wine! Serve with a light chill for extra refreshment.

Lapuyade 2019 Jurançon Moelleux Petit Manseng

Clos Marie-Louise/Château Lapuyade is a beautiful biodynamic estate deep in the hills of Jurançon, south of Pau. Their wines are harvested by hand, fermented with wild yeasts and aged in old barrels purchased from Yquem and Haut-Brion. Their 2019 Petit Manseng is a gorgeous wine and a sensational value. The wine needs a bit of air to open up, then shows deep floral honeyed apricot, candied citrus, stone, spice and caramel aromas with sweet fruit on the palate—lemon oil, exotic fruit and brown spice lifted by very  firm acidity. Terrific length. With a few days open, more exotic fruit, pineapple and lychee emerge and the wine softens into something wonderful. An outstanding Jurançon moelleux that will accompany fois gras, patés, cheeses, fruit desserts and is fabulous on its own. (About 70 gr/liter RS)

Bera 2022 Moscato d'Asti Canelli

100 % Muscat Petit Grains from a beautiful organic vineyard, fermented with wild yeasts, minimal SO2 is used. We sell this Moscato d'Asti because it's one of the best we've ever tasted – a wine with finesse and complexity; layers of apricot, peach, honey, balanced by clean lime-like acidity. Most of the competition is dull and insipid by comparison. The fact that this organic wine is made by some of the nicest people you can imagine has nothing to do with our selecting it for your delectation...

Rovero 2019 Brachetto d'Asti

Brachetto is usually made in the same style of Moscato d’Asti -- the fermentation is stopped when alcohol is still quite low and some of the CO2 is captured to create a slightly sparkling, sweet wine. The folks are Rovero farm strictly organically, the fermentation is arrested with filtration rather than large doses of sulfur (as is common for sweet Brachetto) to limit overall additions to the wine. The wine has opulent strawberry fruit and red flowers on the nose with a lively sparkle and creamy texture braced by bright acid and plenty of sweetness; it is a truly carefree wine that is a joy to drink.  Try it as a natural pairing for pies, with strawberry shortcake, as a sweet pairing for prosciutto and melon, or as a dessert in and of itself.

Gomez Nevado NV Abocado Roble Viejo

The ultimate Pumpkin Pie pairing! This is a delicious, unfortified, off-dry delicacy from the folks at Gomez Nevado, and we couldn't be more excited about the timing of its arrival. Harvest is in late October, from certified organic Aris grapes. Grapes are pressed into conrete and ferment with skins for 4-6 months, after which the wine is transferred to barrels with 25-30% Dorado, their Amontillado style wine (10-15 year old Dorado). Aging continues for 7 years, and the delicious liquid is bottled En Rama. Only 2000 bottles were made. Considered a wine, but much like an off-dry sherry, this is an auburn-hued delicacy, and a perfect way to finish the meal, especially for folks who shy away from fully sweet dessert wines.  -EL

This superb wine is made from Grenache Gris, Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc and Muscat,  from a solera dating back to 2000, aged in small, very old barrels. Complex aromas of citrus, tea, prune, flowers and caramel. The palate is balanced, with a pretty melange of citrus, white fruits, earth and secondary flavors, very long and lifted by nice acidity. A gorgeous vin doux naturel that will accompany aged cheeses, figs and foie gras, and it's sensationally beautiful by itself. Really a unique and delicious wine. DL

Carmarans, Nicolas 2022 IGP Aveyron Maximus de la Pascole 1.5L

Almost every year, winemakers and friends Nicolas Carmarans and Bruno Duchene make this special bottling, only available in 1.5L Magnum. Selected from their favorite barrels, it's a blend of Grenache from Duchene's vineyards in Collioure and Fer Servadou from Nico's vineyards in the Aveyron. A shoe-in for Thanksgiving, as Duchene's Grenache is always acid forward, never overpowering, and the gamey and fresh character of the Fer Servadou is a perfect compliment. A special wine that is in many ways bottled with friends and feasts in mind. Serve with a chill!

Envinate 2022 Tenerife Benje Blanco 1.5L

Listán Blanco from high elevation (1000-1200m) vineyards on the sunny, dry and continental north-west side of Mount Teide, near the town of Santiago del Teide. The vineyards range in age from 70-110 years old, and are farmed either by the Envinate team, or one of 15 local families who work with them. Vineyards are untrained (traditional for the area), and worked by hand without any chemical treatments used. The grapes see up to 1-2 days of skin contact during fermentation, which is in concrete. The wines rest on the lees in a mixture of used French oak, and concrete tanks. A little flor developed in one of the concrete vats, so there is a hint of an oxidative note to the wine. Listan Blanco is also known as Palomino and the profile is unmistakable here, as Palomino (much like Savagnin in my opinion) has an oxidative lean even without the development of flor/voile. The 2022 is fresh and balanced, a very friendly Benje Blanco!  -EL

Guillemot-Michel 2019 Viré-Clessé Une Bulle (Magnum)

The Guillemot-Michel "Une Bulle" comes from a tiny parcel of old vine Chardonnay on limestone with red clay, high in iron. The wine is a Pet-Nat (Methode Ancestrale) that is bottled after a short period of fermentation, leaving enough sugar in the wine for the fermentation to continue and create the desired bubbles. The wine is aged in bottle on the lees for around 18 months, then riddled and disgorged and re-bottled with a bit more "Une Bulle."  The result is a very delicious aged Pet-Nat showing honeyed aromas of pear and white peach with hints of almond, marzipan and brioche. On the palate the mousse is soft and creamy with flavors of peach and quince  with lime-flower and minerals and a long finish of white fruits, citrus peel and firm acidity. This is a delightful wine to sip by itself or pair with mild cheeses, patés and terrines, fruit desserts..  David Lillie

Bénard, Laurent R19 Champagne Extra Brut 1er cru La Clé des Sept Arpents

Laurent and Michelle Bénard farm just under 3 hectares in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, a small commune in the Marne. They have been farming organically for decades and have been certified organic since 2012. La Clé de Sept Arpent is a blend from a few small parcels, 45% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier with this bottling from 2019 base. As always some reserve wine is used as well. Extra-Brut, with 3 g/l dosage. Quite different from the Pinot Meunier dominant 2014 base bottling that we last stocked, this is an excellent Champagne in its own right. There is lovely purity of fruit, golden notes, fine acidity and nerviness, with grace and elegance in the finish and a notable mineral structure that lingers in the cheeks. A fantastic value, and an ideal pairing for Thanksgiving!

Col di Luna NV Veneto Flora Rosato Raboso

Col di Luna produces sparkling wines at the foot of the Dolomites, with a family tradition and preference for the Brut style. Flora rosato comes from the local grape variety called Raboso, a trifecta of spice, brambly fruit, and a rather energeticacidity! The wine is fermented with a slight maceration on the skins for 12 hours, and then continues to ferment in the tank. Once the wine settles, the producer transfers the juice to the bottle, where it finishes fermentation and creates the magic fizz. This is the traditional col fondo style, and you’ll notice a bit of ‘fondo’, or sediment, in the bottle. For a fresh and fizzy start to your Thanksgiving feast, perfect on its own or with appetizers and lighter fare, or on the table with the meal for a refreshing sip between sides and mains.

Pinon 2020 Vouvray Les Trois Argiles

The 2020 Pinon Vouvray "Les Trois Argiles" is from average 40 year old vines in three east facing parcels, Mortier, Vau Cheavreau and Les Fosses Rouges. The soils are shallow clay and sandy clay over the limestone (lower Turonien). Many old vines remain, planted by Julien's great-graandfather, Camille, and new plantings are done by massale-selection. Organic farming, of course, with manual harvesting in successive "tries" sorted by hand to select the best grapes, vinification in barrel with wild yeasts, aging in barrel or foudre with minimal racking or SO2. The clay soils usually give a denser and less aromatic wine wine than those from silex soils, capable of aging for 30 years or more. As we have been friends of the Pinons for more than 40 years, and are somewhat biased in our enthusiasm for their wines, we will let Loire expert Chris Kissack (the Wine Doctor) describe the 2020 "Les Trois Argiles:"  "It does not seem so expressive on the nose today though (compared to the Silex Noir) but the palate is much more convincing. It shows a dense and compact character, with a rich core of extract and dense fruit, layers of white peach and orange peel, fragrant but solidly compacted, lifted only by the vigorous acids and bright mineral veins I find cutting through the middle. A great demi-sec, with confident and forceful structure, which needs time to come out of its shell. The residual sugar is 20 g/l, and the alcohol is 13.4%."  2020 was the last vintage produced by Francois and Julien together. Francois always felt that their vineyards, being slightly higher and cooler than most of Vouvray, produced grapes with slightly more acidity, that benefitted from the presence of residual sugar. The 2020 "Trois Argiles" might be called Sec-Tendre or Demi-Sec, but at any rate, it's a magnifient wine!  David Lillie

Hermann J. Wiemer 2021 Finger Lakes Riesling Dry

Hermann J. Wiemer saw the great potential of the Finger Lakes to create high-quality cool-climate Riesling as they do in his native Mosel, Germany. The winery was founded in the 1979, one of the first in the region, and continues to be a benchmark for excellent Finger Lakes Riesling. Despite the incredibly challenging weather conditions which can lead to disease-pressure, they are committed to sustainable farming by not using herbicides or insecticides, and reducing their need for fungicides by managing the canopies to increase airflow. The dry Riesling is an excellent example of the great potential of this region for cool-climate varieties.

Gut Hermannsberg 2020 Nahe 'Just Riesling!' Riesling Trocken

Germany's 2023 Vinum Wineguide just awarded our newest German producer from the Nahe, Karsten Peter, "Winemaker of the Year". As per the winery's website: "The stony, mostly volcanic soils, in our vineyards give our wines a pronounced raciness, spice and minerality." The entry level "Just Riesling " shows that in spades whilst maintaining an ethereal 11.5% abv and juicy fruit salad profile underscored by a dry finish. An excellent pairing for all manner of sushi, spicy Asian dishes, barbecued pork, Buffalo chicken wings...Game Day WIne! Giselle Hamburg

Müller, Stefan 2021 Niedermenniger Altenberg Riesling Kabinett Altenberg

Stefan's winery in the Saar has won "Best of" accolades for everything in the past 5 years.  2021 was an astonishing vintage with sizzling acidities balancing ripe sugar levels.  With vineyards in  Niedermenninger and Krettnact,  Altenberg is one of their most well known sites,  very cool with mainly blue slate and the local, extremely rare green slate known as Diabas. Clocking in at 7.5% with 44 grams of RS, this vivid Kabinet teems with fresh aromas of apples and tangerines, and holds its sweetness in a precise structure, destined to age beautifully, a precious and rare exemple of ultra-filigreed Saar Riesling.

Bohigas 2022 Catalunya Xarel-lo

Soils are clay and limestone. Dominating the white varieties grown here is the grape Xarel-lo, which has anti-oxidant properties similar to those in red grapes. There is no aging on this wine. Bohigas vineyards are farmed organically, and are in the process of full organic conversion.

Guímaro 2022 Ribeira Sacra Blanco

This fantastic white from Pedro Rodriguez from Guimaro is majority Godello, with small percentages of local varieties that are intermingled in several vineyards. The grapes were harvested by hand and fermented and aged in stainless steel. There is some lees aging in the tank to provide textural frame to the mineral driven, stone fruit expression of the Godello. For Thanksgiving, this is a versatile white that can resemble a Chablis closer to opening, and reminds more of a Rhone white once it has an hour or so to breath.

Pepe Raventos 2021 'Vinya la Plana' Malvasia de Sitges

Malvasia de Sitges, recuperated from one single remaining vineyard in Sitges that was the last parcel in the 70s, nearly extinct until the painstaking work of Ramon ___ from Cellar Pardas. Pepe got some clippings from Ramon to plant Malvasia de Sitges in limestone soils at his family's estate in 2018, and this is the limited production wine (1500 bottles produced) that tells the story. As with the other "Vins Pepe" wine, these are aged in Pepe's basement, but instead of old barrels and amphora, the Malvasia is aged in cement eggs, which in some ways might calm the herbal sharpness of the grape, but retain all of the notes of Mediterranean herbs and bright lemons.

Manissy 2021 Tavel Tête de Cuvée Rosé

(Retasted in June 2023, the wine is showing even better with gorgeous fruit and fabulous length!) Produced since 1915 this is the historic cuvée of Chateau de Manissy, retaining the ancient label and the ancient methods of production, now enhanced by Biodynamic farming. Similar in style to the Tavel 'Vintage" at Domane L'Anglore, the wine is a blend of Grenache, Clairette and Cinsault that undergoes a 24 to 48 hour maceration on the skins and then a cool fermentation with wild yeasts for about 2 weeks. The wine ages in old barrels for 9 to 12 months. This is a true Rosé of gastronomy that will drink beautifully for ten years or more.  Showing a slightly darker hue than the 2020 vintage, it exudes bright aromas of pomegranate, red flowers and spice with a silky, cool palate and a  light red wine feel,  with flavors of red currant, tart cherry and saline minerals. "Can live 10 to 20 years if well cellared, drink with melon & cured ham salad, grilled meats, magret de canard (duck breasts), veal meatballs, white meats, chicken breast, guinea fowl with mushrooms & chestnuts" says the estate, or just sip by itself on a summer evening...

Tessier 2022 Cheverny Rosé (Pinot Noir, Gamay)

This will disappeaar quickly on your table for Thanksgiving! Philippe and now Simon Tessier are making really delicious wines from their organic vineyards in Sologne. Under the Cheverny AOC, they make white and red, but also rosé : the sandy clay soil as well as the grapes (2/3 Pinot Noir and 1/3 Gamay) are perfectly suited for the style. Of course, don't expect a boring, insipid, pale salmon whitish rosé. There is always some serious depth and length in their wine! With the 2022 as in 2020 and 2019, you have on top more texture and power than usual: the warm summer led to ripe, concentrated berries. - the wine is ripe but bone-dry at 13.5% alc, under .5 gr/L RS. This bottling is more aromatic than usual, with notes of dried rose, pink grapefruit and pomegranate. The attack is creamy and rich, but the wine quickly balances out the alcohol but a really nice bitter edge of pomelo, and the acidity kicks in at the end. It is the type of rosé that can pair really with pretty much anything, and that will have the texture you want when the days will start to be chilly. Serve it in a white wine glass and pair it with what you be pleased to cook, be it some fried squids with spicy aioli, a chana masala or any kind of cheese. (16 gr/L total SO2 - what a pleasure to enjoy a pure and delicious rosé with almost no sulfur!)

Gravillas 2021 Vin de France A Fleur de Peau

"Our orange wine is a dry macerated Muscat (3 to 4 weeks) which combines the notes of Earl Gray tea, orange blossom and apricot. Perfect with roasted squash or mushrooms accompanied by smoked bacon. Very interesting with an apricot tagine. Also goes well with full-flavored cheeses such as raclette, Mont d’Or, tartiflette," "One of the greatest dry muscats in the world" said Decanter magazine. The high praise is warranted, as it strikes a captivating balance of subtle fruit - think lychee, citrus peel, and pear - with delicate floral aromatics that suggest walking through a breezy meadow in full bloom. Then just when you think you have this wine pinned down you get a rush of chiseled minerality on the palate, a welcome twist that gives it lift and balance while still retaining its airy weightlessness. On the second day there was an added layer of complexity, with some honey and deeper apricot fruit peeking through. The acidity is in perfect balance and even on the third day it was still singing, suggesting some aging potential. While it's not a heavy, powerful orange wine, it's equally compelling as it seems to shift in the glass from sip to sip - definitely a bottle worth contemplating over.

Montesecondo 2019 Trebbiano Tïn

The ‘Tin’ cuvées are the most innovative wines being made at Montesecondo. The name is an homage to Silvio’s North African heritage (“Tin” means clay in Arabic); the ‘Tin’ wines are fermented and aged in clay amphora. The white 'Tin' is produced from a parcel that is primarily Trebbiano Toscano interplanted with a bit of Malvasia. The grapes are destemmed and placed in 250 to 350-liter unlined amphora to ferment for six months, and then bottled unfined and unfiltered. The wine shows aromas of ripe stone fruit and the palate is more lifted than many orange wines made with extended skin contact, perhaps due to the relatively tame personality of Trebbiano Toscano. The texture is soft rather than rugged with crisp acidity and delicate tannins showing flavors of tart white peach and fresh citrus fruit. Fascinating on its own, I think that it would be an easy match for all kinds of food: try it with rich pasta dishes, olives and cheese, white fish, grilled chicken or artichokes. - Andy Paynter  /// This was Andy's old tasting note for the 2016 Trebbiano Tin, which was spot on and consistent on tech, with maceration now averaging between 6-8 months depending on the vintage. I recently opened a bottle of the Tin 2019 and I can say it's the best vintage of the wine I've ever had. Silvio has clearly found a way to utilize skins and amphorae to achieve a delicate mouthfeel and an added layer of complexity to the wine, without overdoing it. All of the flavors and textures are harmonious and balanced, it's a success!

Division Wine Co. 2021 Willamette Valley Gamay Noir 'Lutte'

Division's "Lutte" Gamay comes from four different vineyards all within the Willamette Valley AVA. The name is French for "struggle" and refers to Division's fighting spirit in their mission to bring attention to Oregon Gamay, of which they are the largest producer and biggest champion. The Lutte is medium/light bodied with great purity of fruit - lifted and fresh with ample acidity and a mineral streak that gives it depth and complexity. Gamay is always a great Thanksgiving option and this does not disappoint - an outstanding example of Oregon Gamay! JD

The cuvée "La Pause" comes from a plot Laurent Saillard originally rented since 2011 from Catherine Roussel of the famed natural wine domain, Clos Roche Blanche. This is a clean and naturally made Gamay with forward fruit and great acidity. The 2022 is pure a delicious, perfect for the holiday feast. Don't get just one bottle, you'll regret it!

An homage to the Lienhardt harvest team, this is a delicious light red that is perfect for the end of Summer! From organic grapes grown in the Gard (Rhone Valley), maceration is partial carbonic for about a week, with a gentle press afterwards. Aging is for 8 months in concrete eggs. The blend is Syrah with Grenache Blanc and a small amount of Viognier, but it sort of reminds us of a good Passetoutgrain! Serve chilled.

Desvignes 2022 Beaujolais L'Aube a Javernieres

2020 was the first vintage of "L'Aube à Javernières" and the first Desvignes wine to not be 100% cru Morgon, coming from a parcel of 20 to 30-year-old vines in deep clay soils on the edge of Javernières, just below the Cote du Py hill. The grapes are harvested by hand and the winemaking is consistent with most of the Desvignes wines, undergoing semi-carbonic fermentation and aged in concrete with no punchdowns. The 2022 is a fresh and exuberant expression of Gamay with beautiful ripeness, showing red fruit and cool herbs on the nose, backed by earthy acidity that creates wonderful tension and a long finish that makes it a versatile pairing partner. Absolutely delicious and a great value for anyone who loves serious Beaujolais!

Rateau 2022 Beaune Clos des Mariages

(This wine is just beautiful, not heavy, fragrant, supple. long - it will be on our table for Thanksgiving, along with the Chevalerie "Breteche.") Located toward the bottom of the slope beneath Beaune Grèves and adjacent to Les Cents Vignes, Clos des Mariages is a mix of young and very old vines planted in clay and brown limestone soils. "This fertile soil gives wines that are open and joyous, with delicate spice notes, giving great pleasure in their youth and capable of long-term aging." (J-C Rateau) Indeed the 2022 Clos des Mariages seems a bit fuller than the 2020 and 2021 but showing lovely brightness and balance, really a superb wine with gorgeious aromas, showing a bright mélange of black cherry, strawberry, red currant and raspberry with hints of spice, citrus, licorice and violet. The palate is very elegant showing dense, chalky fruit, sappy and ripe but with firm acidity and mineral flavors that continue in the very long, juicy finish. This is absolutely delicious now and should drink well continuously over the next ten to fifteen years. Beautiful wine! David Lillie

Rosi Schuster 2021 Burgenland St. Laurent Classic St Margarethen

This lone St. Laurent on the shelf right now is simply a knock-out and one of the best examples of the variety I've tried. The bright-fruited nose is laced with complex baking-spice aromas: cinnamon, nutmeg and anise. Well-balanced and refreshing, this wine could take a light chill and become dangerously drinkable. Spontaneously fermented in open tanks, and not a single new barrel goes near this wine, so drink up! A quick note: this is the third vintage we've worked with this wine and it's by far the best. No one is making better reds in Austria than Hannes Schuster and this vintage's earthy character brings new complexity to an already reliably great wine. — jfr

Kelley Fox 2022 Willamette Valley Mirabai Pinot Noir

We rarely suggest judging a book by its cover, but in this case the label speaks so well to its contents! The 'Mirabai' from Kelley Fox blends fruit from two neighboring vineyards, 75% from the Maresh Vineyard and 25% from Weber. The Dundee Hills parcels were both planted in the 1970's so the vines are fully mature, and sit on Jory soil. The quality of the farming coupled with Kelley's intuitive sense and strict aversion to additives in the cellar allows the land to shine through in this bottle. The is a portion of whole cluster here, depending on the vintage, fermentation is in small lots, and aging is around 7 months in neutral French oak. The 2022 is a beautiful wine, brimming with energy but with a seductive side that makes it feel like a treat. It's light enough to work with classic Thanksgiving fare but has the structure and cut to stand up to heartier meats or roasted vegetables. Always a favorite and this vintage is no exception!

Cartier 2019 Saint-Emilion Chateau Cartier

The second label to Chateau Fonroque, Chateau Cartier sees none of the estate's Cabernet Franc. The Merlot that goes into this wine comes from under the limestone plateau of St.-Emilion, picked from biodynamically farmed vines on the limestone-clay and silty clay soils of the slopes and bottom-slopes.  All fruit is picked by hand. The wine was fermented naturally and aged in a mixture of 75% barrel and 25% concrete vats. A very impressive partner to Fonroque, mimicking the minerally character that the estate is known for.  The nose delivers scents of dark flowers and rich baked fruit - strawberry, cherry, blueberry. The palate shows deep red and black cherry and plum, with accents of warm cedar and herbs. There is great minerality, which lends the wine a structure of supreme freshness, but a textural softness making the wine quite delicious now. The 2019 vintage was unusually hot in mid-summer so harvest was early - "the result was a rich, harmonious wine with a silky texture. Its classicism makes 2019 one of our best vintages" says the Fonroque/Cartier website.

Dunn 2019 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon

The Dunn Howell Mountain Cab needs no introduction, and 2019 has been an incredible vintage for this wine. Antonio Galloni from Vinous writes: “The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is outrageously beautiful. A wine of extraordinary purity, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. The tannins are nearly silky for a young Howell Mountain Cabernet. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, rose petal and pomegranate all build in this sumptuous, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 is one of the most elegant Cabernets I have tasted here, and that is saying something. What a wine!”

Old Vines is composed of a variety of old sites from California that are either too small to be made into a vineyard designate wine or are “new” to the Turley family (and way of farming). Vines are anywhere from 41 to 129 years old, and a true representation of California old vine Zinfandel, hailing from vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lodi, Contra Costa, Amador and Paso Robles. Turley, alongside longtime Vineyard Manager (and now Director of Winemaking) Tegan Passalacqua, is devoted to saving these old vineyards, reinvigorating them through organic farming practices and preserving them in the ground for generations to come.

Viña Zorzal 2021 Navarra Garnacha (Arrives 11/14)

We have always been big fans of the Graciano from Vina Zorzal in Navarra, as the wine is an outstanding deal made from a red grape of Spain that is fantastic for a medium bodied red with smooth tannins. However, after tasting the 2021 Garnacha with Xavi (one of the winemaker brothers) this year, we were so impressed that we had to stock the Garnacha too! Acid-driven, fresh and very pretty, almost translucent in the glass like a Pinot Noir, with low alcohol and tons of satisfaction. If you need a fantastic wine that over-delivers for the price and would perfectly suit your Thanksgiving feast, this is it!

Bibei, Dominio Do 2019 Ribeira Sacra Dominio do Bibei

The flagship red from Dominio do Bibei, the 2019 is mostly Brancellao as usual, in this case 93%, with the rest a mix of Mouraton and Grao Negro, all local grapes that the estate is passionate about. When we tasted the 2019 earlier this year, our eyes lit up and we immediately thought of Thanksgiving. This was sometime in the Summer, mark you, so it was not the season to be thinking of a Fall-time harvest feast, but the super light rusticity and fresh acidity immediately conjured thoughts of Thanksgiving pairing. Grapes are destemmed and fermented with natural yeast in old French 500L barrels, with gentle manual wetting of the cap to preserve the distinct aromas of the Brancellao. Aging is for 2 years in 3 yr old (or older) French barrels followed by 6 months in 1500L foudres, and the wine is bottled without filtration. Almost cranberry like in it's pronounced red fruit notes, without being tart or too sharp. A beautiful, elegant and singular wine that can easily play the role that a Cru Beaujolais or red Burgundy would play on the Thanksgiving table.

Guímaro 2020 Ribeira Sacra Camiño Real

Guímaro (which means "rebel" in Gallego) was founded by Pedro Rodriguez in 1991, in Amandi, the most celebrated subzone of Ribeira Sacra. Here Mencía and other indigenous varieties (Merenzao, Mouratón, Brancellao, Caiño, Sousón...) are planted on very steep terraced slopes of slate on the northern bank of the river Sil. The vines on these south-facing slopes (almost cliffs, really - we definitely recommend checking out a photograph of these precariously steep vineyards) produce wines of great mineral intensity and character. Camiño Real comes from six terraced vineyards around Amandi, with about 85% of the blend Mencía and 15% other indigenous red varieties. Pedro harvests the grapes by hand  and ferments them together in open-top oak vats with 40 days of maceration on the skins before raising in an foudre and 225L and 500L barrels. 2021 was by all accounts a very special vintage in Ribeira Sacra, and this is one of the most open and immediately charming bottlings of Camino Real that we can remember, with pure red and purple fruit in the mid-palate, medium-body, spice and elegance in the finish.

Monte Dall' Ora 2022 Valpolicella Classico "Saseti"

Monte Dalle'Ora makes beautiful classically styled wines - biodynamically farmed, with native yeast fermentations - and this hits all the right notes for a light and elegant Valpolicella Classico. The blend is 50% Corvina, 20% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella, and 10% Molinara & Oseleta. A translucent ruby in the glass, with violets and wild raspberry on the nose, and a delicate fruity lift on the palate. Maceration is for about a week, in concrete and steel tanks, and aging is quite short, with the wine bottled usually in February or March. It's all about freshness here, with minerals and acidity playing a key factor in its versatility with foods, especially upcoming feasts.

Mocali 2018 Brunello di Montalcino

A recent visit to Montalcino proved illuminating: there are a number of exceptional wines to explore. As it happens, I didn't get to meet with Mocali, but I am much better attuned to appreciate Brunello, and the Mocali wines were so good that it was an easy decision to buy them after tasting last week. The wine is quite full bodied, but lifted with juicy black fruit and good acidity. Three years in large barrels (a mix of Slavonian and French oak) lends gravitas - this is a serious wine, but very drinkable now.

Quinta do Infantado 2011 Porto Colheita Tawny

(Arrives 4/6) Old-vine field blend of over twenty varieties, made in the best vintages rather than from a blend of vintages. The Infantado Colheita is always a superb wine, a bit more distinctive and rich than the regular 10-year.  It comes from exclusively Class A parcels (Vale de Moinhos and Castelos) totaling 3.5 hectares on poor schist soils. The fruit is hand-harvested, partly destemmed and fermented exclusively in lagar; fermentation is stopped with seventy-seven-degree wine brandy. The wine was aged for ten years in a combination of very old tonel or balseiro (tall wooden tanks from 3,000-60,000 liters with thick staves that slow down oxidation) and the classic Port pipa (550-liter horizontal casks with thinner staves that promote oxidation). The 2011 is a gorgeous wine with a lovely fairly dark tawny color . The aromas are pure and elegant with dried red currant and raisin, rose petal, blood orange peel, clove. The palate is silky and supple with very pure focused flavors of dried fruits, earth, citrus and brown spice that continue in the very long finish which is sustained by firm acidity. This is a simply outstanding Colheita that will pair with fruit deserts and full-flavored cheeses and is a delight to sip by itself. This happily avoids the excess sweetness and brandy notes of Colheitas from the more commercial houses. Highly recommended and a bargain at the price!  David Lillie

Descombes, Georges 2020 Morgon Vieilles Vignes 1.5 L

This is a classic version of the Descombes Morgon VV, showing ripe high-toned black raspberry and tart cherry aromas with plum, violet, citrus, earth and brown spice, really lovely. The elegant sappy black and red fruits continue on the palate with complex notes of blood orange,  mint and spice, quite saline and earthy as well, really showing the terroir. The wine is dense and structured but bright and balanced, finishing with refreshing acidity, citrus, cherry fruit, anise and mineral flavors. Delicious now, this should be superb in three to five years, and should drink well till 2030 and beyond.  David Lillie

Pierre Andre 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Magnum (Arrives 11/14)

We consider Domaine Pierre André to be one of the greatest estates in Châteuneuf-du-Pape. Organic since 1980 (one of the first in the AOC) and Biodynamic since 1992. The red is 90% Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Vaccarèse, Counoise, Muscadin and Picpoul. Some parcels are over 100 years old, with the average vine age around 65 years. Tasted with Jacqueline in January, the wine was quite remarkable, showing a relatively light red/garnet color with lovely aromas of tart cherry, red currant, rose and violet. The plate was supple, not heavy, with complex red fruits, earth and minerals with silky fresh tannins, finishing with terrific length of red currant and berries. "Un gourmandise" said Jacqueline and we couldn't agree more - but obviously built to age as well. David Lillie (CSW price $107.99)

Domaine des Costes 2016 Pécharmant Cuvée Domaine 1.5 L

(Arrives March 7th)  I’ve been told on great authority than one really can’t call yourself a “serious” wine shop if you don’t have a Bergerac (and by extension a Pécharmant, its age worthy sibling). That it should be bio, goes without saying. And with the arrival of  Domaine des Costes 16 Pécharmant we are down to serious business, friends!  The new release is a grand expression, indeed. The robe is a dark ruby hue. The nose is reserved on opening, but with air (a quick decant) beautiful notes of plum, African violet, black tea, cassis, and loamy soil emerge, beyond this is are wisps of baking spices and cigar box. The palate is ripe and structured with black currant and cherry stone vying with blackberry and gunpowder tea flavors for prominence; yet with time in the glass an elemental ripeness emerges to counter the firm—albeit ripe—tannins and tangy mineral core. And while this is young, there’s plenty of joy here and even more in store if you are patient and have a cool dark space to squirrel away a couple of bottles, or perhaps a case. And while this may not display the shiny gloss of our friends downstream in Bordeaux, there’s a lot to like here and a tremendous opportunity to sock away a true vin de garde at glou glou prices. Fabulous with hanger steak with black-eyed pea salad and braised greens, but this could just as agreeably pair with guineafowl or cèpes en papillote or truffled potato gratin. Highly recommended.  John McIlwain

Gripa 2015 Saint-Peray Les Pins 1.5 Liter

Domaine Bernard and Fabrice Gripa is one of the top estates in Saint-Joseph and Saint-Peray, with the whites being particularly stylish and well-made. The Saint-Peray Les Pins is from 35 year-old vines on both granite and limestone soils, approximately 75% Marsanne, 25% Roussanne. It's a treat to have an older vintage of this wine in magnum, drinking perfectly now and just in time for Thanksgiving! Here's the drinkrhone review: "shiny yellow robe. The nose gives a fat aroma of flan, apricot, has a ripe fruit presence, with some of the sun’s rays in its slightly baked nature. Oak rides alongside. It’s a big start, demanding of patience. The palate is also on a large scale, is properly structured, holds abundant richness and a real wheel of gras towards the finish. There are salty late notes in with apricot, ginger fabric. This is really well presented wine for la bonne table, with sunshine length. It ends with great purity. 14.5°. Drink through 2025.

Tissot, Stéphane NV Crémant du Jura Non Dosé 1.5 L

An abiding staff favorite from Stéphane Tissot's biodynamic estate in Arbois, this crémant is a blend of 50% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 5% each of Poulsard and Trousseau. The interplay between the dry, mineral complexity and rich generosity make this an incredible Champagne-alternative. Opulent aromas of raw honey and baked red apple lead to flavors of tangy yellow fruit, crisp apple, toasted almond, and quince on the persistent finish. Not long ago Stéphane elevated the quality of the wine with a portion aged in barrel and he tries to increase the barrel fermentation on the Cremant each year. At this point he may be close to 100% at the rate he was going!

Nuria Renom 2021 'La Maca Beu' Pet-Nat Magnum 1.5L

This is a delightful Ancestral style Pet-Nat of 95% Macabeu and 5% Muscat de Alexandria from two different parcels on limestone near Nuria's winery. Grapes are destemmed and see about one week of maceration with the skins, while the free-run juice was partially fermented without skins. The wine was bottled before fermentation was finished, to develop pressure, and was aged on the lees for 9 months before being disgorged. In the world of winemakers who give a damn about their Pet-Nats, we should welcome Nuria Renom! This is a fine example. A living wine, with a refreshing 10% alc, perfect bubbles, lively acidity, a touch of density on the mid-palate, and a long mineral finish. // If you plan to entertain this Thanksgiving, or you're headed to a friendsgiving or family gathering, this is the most energetic and REFRESHING, palate cleansing, gulpable wine that was meant for a party with friends and will keep you coming back for more. At 10% alc, it won't last long!!
