Shipments from some of our favorite domains have finally arrived after long delays. These estates produce superb wines for everyday drinking or short-term cellaring that are among the best values in this or any other store in the US!

Domaine Patrick Lambert, Chinon

Around the corner from Matthieu and Bernard Baudry in Cravant is the small organic estate of Patrick Lambert, whose wines have become perennial favorites at Chambers Street. The estate dates back to 1990, but was restructured in 2005, as Patrick "downsized" to 6 hectares of the best terroirs. The soils are plowed or left with grasses, according to the parcels and the estate is certified organic by Ecocert. Vinifications are traditional with wild yeasts and the wines age either in vat or in small old barrels in his cold cellar cut into the limestone hillside. The Lambert Chinons are sensational values and offer a range of styles, according to the different topsoils over the limestone bedrock. In this shipment we're happy to have a small quantitiy of the insanely delicious 2021 Chinon "Gourmandise."  Made from young vines on gravel and sandy soils, this supple, fruity and delicious Chinon should be served cool with just about anything this summer - don't delay!

And of course Patrick's Chinon Rosé is perfectly delicious, very much in the style of the Baudrys, from 25 year-old Cabernet Franc vines on gravel and sandy clay soils over limestone. The wine shows lovely aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry and rose; the palate is ripe and pretty with raspberry, citrus and stone flavors with nice density and texture, with juicy acids, berry flavors and minerals in the finish. and at $14.99 it's a sensational value.

2018 is a great vintage for Chinon reds - "magnifique" according to Matthieu Baudry, and anyone seeking traditional wines from old vines will enjoy the 2018 Lambert Cuvée Vieilles Vignes The wine shows a deep red/black color and ripe blackberry and strawberry aromas with pepper, earth and citrus. The palate is deep and ripe in 2018, showing earthy blackberry and strawberry compote with prune and bitter chocolate and firm structure, and the 2018 "L'Ame d'Antan" (deep black/garnet color with elegant aromas of ripe blackberry and strawberry with hints of violet, prune, citrus and crushed stone. The palate is dense but bright, with a silky texture, showing pure blackberry fruit with earth and licorice with firm mineral acidity. Good length with lingering berry and mineral flavors.)

Harvest at Domaine des Costes

Domaine des Costes, Pécharmant.

Known for the best wines of the Dordogne region, Pécharmant is north of Bergerac on south-facing slopes, on a unique terroir called "tran" of gravel over iron-rich clay and limestone. Winemaker/oenologist Jean-Marc Dournel began conversion to organic agriculture in 2003 and the estate is now certified organic and using biodynamic methods. The reds, from equal parts Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, are aromatically complex and have lovely, earthy fruit and firm tannins.

These are extraordinary wines, full of character, that transcend their price-point, as John McIlwain says about the 2016 Cuvée Domaine "The robe is a dark ruby hue. The nose is reserved on opening, but with air (a quick decant) beautiful notes of plum, African violet, black tea, cassis, and loamy soil emerge, beyond this is are wisps of baking spices and cigar box. The palate is ripe and structured with black currant and cherry stone vying with blackberry and gunpowder tea flavors for prominence; yet with time in the glass an elemental ripeness emerges to counter the firm—albeit ripe—tannins and tangy mineral core. And while this is young, there’s plenty of joy here and even more in store if you are patient and have a cool dark space to squirrel away a couple of bottles, or perhaps a case.

A special treat in this shipment is 18 magnums of the 2010 Pécharmant "Grande Reserve." Made only in the finest vintages, this wine is just reaching maturity and will be a fabulous pairing for a grilled steak or leg of lamb. And for lovers of Sauternes, the 2011 Chateau La Rouquette Monbazillac, made by Domaine des Costes, is a complex and beautifully balanced sweet wine at an unbeatable price...

Domaine Laguerre, Roussillon

This is one of the finest domains in the Roussillon, with high-altitude mountain vineyards producing superb wines of terroir. A visit to Eric in Saint-Martin de Fenouillet requires steep climbs through a mountain pass up to the vineyards at 500 - 600+ meters. Here the granit and gneiss soils, cooler climate, very low yields and Eric's superb organic farming produce distinctive, balanced wines with bright fruit and firm acidities.

The top wines here are named after a flowering bush called Ciste that grows throughout the vineyards, contributing to biodiversity and wind protection. Le Ciste Blanc, is a unique blend of Marsanne, Roussanne, Vermentino, Grenache Blanc and Maccabeu, and is one of the most interesting whites of southern France. Le Ciste Rouge is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape of the mountains, made with Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah and Carignan - fabulously complex with the ripeness balanced by the bright earthy acidity present in all the Laguerre wines.

Eric Laguerre at Millesime Bio, 2020

2021 Eos Rosé - We've always loved Eric's rather full-bodied rosé, made from Grenache, Carignan and Syrah, but in recent vintages he has made a lighter, fresher wine from Grenache Gris and Carignan and it's really delicious! it shows a pretty, pale pink color with subtle aromas of rose and raspberry. The palate is fresh, light and round with lovely red and yellow fruit flavors, quite crisp and long. (We have 20 cases) The Eos Blanc and Eos Rouge are superb in 2021 as well - anyone looking for an everyday wine that is soulful and distinctive should buy them by the case...

Eric has once again sent us a small quantity of "Oxy" - his extraordinary Grenache Blanc that spends five years sous-voile. The current vintage is 2014 - for any lover of Vin Jaune, or anyone making chicken with Vin Jaune and morels, this is a must buy! The wine shows lovely herbal, stone, citrus peel and strong oxidative aromas. The oxidation is less apparent on the palate which is extremely elegant and of course shows an intense minerality, with flavors of lemon zest, stone and dried pear, finishing with terrific length. We have 36 bottles...

Rouquette 2011 Monbazillac Chateau La Rouquette 500ml

(Arrival Wed 11/9) The Dournel family produces this lovely Monbazillac under the Chateau La Rouquette label. Consider it a good Sauternes in everything except price, perhaps slightly less sweet. The 2011 is very elegant, fine and complex, with aromas of ripe white fruits, peach and lime flower. Supple, round and with medium sweetness on the palate with perfect acidity, the fruit is fresh and pretty, not at all heavy, really a delightful wine to sip by itself or with fruit desserts, patés and vegetable terrines.

Hand harvested from 20-year-old Cabernet Franc vines on gravel and sandy clay soils over limestone. Domaine des Costes 2016 Pécharmant Cuvée Domaine

(Arrives 9/21) Purchased by the Dournel family in 1992, the Domaine desé Costes in Pécharmant has been certified organic since 2007. Pécharmant is a small high-quality AOC within Bergerac, seldom seen in the US,  benefiting from hillside vineyards of gravel over iron-rich clay. The wines are made from Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon -  well-structured with dense fruit, the older vine cuvées age beautifully, such as the  2016 Costes "Domaine" which ages one year in barrique and foudre with additional aging in vat before bottling. I’ve been told on great authority than one really can’t call yourself a “serious” wine shop if you don’t have a Bergerac (and by extension a Pécharmant, its age worthy sibling). That it should be bio, goes without saying. And with the arrival of  Domaine des Costes 16 Pécharmant we are back down to serious business, friends! The new release is a grand expression, indeed. The robe is a dark ruby hue. And while this may not display the shiny gloss of our friends downstream in Bordeaux, there’s a lot to like here and a tremendous opportunity to sock away a true vin de garde at glou glou prices. Fabulous with hanger steak with black-eyed pea salad and braised greens, but this could just as agreeably pair with guineafowl or cèpes en papillote or truffled potato gratin. Highly recommended.  John McIlwain

Grill a steak and enjoy!

Laguerre 2021 Côtes du Roussillon Eos Rouge

Eric Laguerre's "Eos Rouge" is an elegant blend of 80% Grenache from 40-year-old gobelet-trained vines, with some Carignan and Syrah from soils of decomposed granite, gneiss, and some veins of quartz. Like "Le Passage," the grapes are fermented in fiber tanks with native yeasts for about two weeks, then aged in concrete. The beautiful 2021 shows bright aromas of cherry, strawberry and black raspberry with hints of blueberry and musk from the Syrah, quite pretty and pure. The palate shows a potpourri of ripe red and black fruits, with earth, cocoa and spice in a refreshing frame of cool acidity and mineral flavors.  The high altitude and the primarily granite soils give Eric's wines a bright and vibrant character that makes them great pairings with a wide variety of foods - we loved it with a grilled burger from grass-fed beef, but grilled pork and chicken would be great as well.  This is one of the best values in the store - thanks to Eric and Corinne Laguerre for their great organic farming and delicious, affordable wines! Laguerre 2019 Côtes du Roussillon Le Ciste Blanc

(Arrives 9/21) Eric Laguerre's "Le Ciste," (named after a flowering bush in and around his vineyards) is certainly one of the most distinctive whites of the Roussillon. Grown in Eric's high-elevation vineyards on acidic soils of decomposed granite, the wine is made from Marsanne, Roussanne, Rolle (Vermentino), Grenache Blanc and Maccabeu. Yields are about 20 Hl/Ha, harvesting is by hand in small baskets, fermentation (wild yeasts) and aging is in small barrels. Complex aromas of lemon oil, thyme, hay and white fruits—a lovely melange with contributions from each variety and especially showing the Marsanne and Roussanne. The palate is dense, stony and saline with herbal, citrus, almond and white fruit flavors. The finish is long with mineral acids and white fruits that linger on the palate. Complex and distinctive as a young wine, this will accompany grilled fish as well as fish and chicken in sauce and goat cheeses, and should develop nicely with a few years of cellaring. Really a Grand Cru of the Roussillon and a great value! DL

This is a beautiful wine - a Chateauneuf-du-Pape of the mountains - and a great value. Serve slightly cool with grilled meats, stews and full-flavored cheeses or cellar five to ten years.
