What to drink on a hot August day!
The Hofberg is the site that made Adam's name and it's the one where his family has the most historical connections, but Andreas really perks up when discussing the Goldtröpfchen. This beauty is going to take years to come around before the fruit really begins to sing, but until then it's a savory, earthy, stony monster of a wine. By far the most expensive of Adam's wines, justified by its origin in very, very steep, old, ungrafted vines in the old Laychen terraces, west of the historical Goldtröpfchen. These vines are some of the oldest in the area, as they weren't pulled up and replanted when the vineyard was reshaped by the German government; this also makes them the most difficult to work. Like the Piesporter, only miniscule quantities are made and everything's long been sold-out. We're extremely fortunate to have some to sell, even if it's just a handful of bottles. -jfr
Finally, Zeppwingert. Gernot only has .5 hectares and it's directly next to Batterieberg. It's a terraced, ungrafted, old-vine section, and the vines used to belong to our friends at Weiser-Künstler until they sold to Kollmann. As is becoming a theme for this vintage, it's drier than in the past and has great depth, precision and superb length. -jfr This shows less citrus notes than the other bottlings from this vintage and is instead voluptuous and mouth-watering, with more ripe pear. Enticing, savory, and fragrant with wet stones and a dark, sultry attitude. 100 year-old vines from a small parcel of just 8 terraces. JK
Sourced from Florian's finest vines from the legendary Ayler Kupp vinyard, this GG never disappoints, but the 2014 vintage seems to be particularly promising. - David Salinas
Word is that must weights were kept low (around 88 oeschle) for the 2014 Schonfels, yet great concentration and length seem to be present as well. Hats off to Florian Lauer for a great, dry RIesling. - David Salinas
Lauer's warmest Grand Cru vineyard with predominately gravel soils, the Saarfeilser GG is dense and creamy (for a Lauer wine), herbal and floral, balanced by tart nectarine skin. A fascinating and elegant balance of rich texture and bright acidity, this wine is poised to develop beautifully with time. Cari Bernard
Fass 15, Stirn (forehead), comes from near the top of the Ayler Kupp where the hill curves around; the cooler climate and wind at this altitude makes for a site that is often harvested last.
Covered in eroded gray slate, Unterstenberg is the site on the Ayler Kupp that has some of the most water retention due to its location at the foot of the hillside. Notes of peach, orange zest, apple compote, and red grapefruit on the nose open up to a rich and fruit-forward palate boasting ripe apricot, yellow apple skin, and pineapple. Spicy and bold! Pair with grilled Thai curry squid, crab cakes over a citrus salad. Cari Bernard
Kern is a parcel on the west-facing side of the Ayler Kupp, extending from the top to the bottom of the slope, a cross-section of slate at multiple levels of erosion, warmed by the afternoon sun. A tropical nose of kiwi and passion fruit, the wine has a sharp, juicy attack of white grapefruit zest and kumquat, balanced by notes of green herbs, salinity, and wet stone minerality on the finish. Lauer's portion of Neuenberg is located on the flank of the Kupp closer to the base of the slope. Piquant, with vibrant red grapefruit, tangerine, and apricot notes that continue onto the palate followed by ripe mango, peach candy, yuzu and orange zest with ginger spice on the lengthy finish.
