The former owner, a dedicated aficionado, was most active collecting in the ‘60s and ‘70s, purchasing these wines on release; they have been removed from a large, temperature-controlled cellar. He and his wife were generous hosts who enjoyed sharing their treasured bottles, but there are still many very rare and fine wines on this offer.
Here's another view of the neck-label on the Mouton 1961:
As you can see from the ad below (published in NY Magazine in 1972, and now verging on the comical) there was a Famous Taster. More to the point, there was a famous wine department at Macy's (a famous place, that is, with some famous wines, and some not so famous). I think it had closed by 1980 when I started shopping for wine in NYC, but in any case my inborn apprehension of department stores would have discouraged me from visiting (is there a designated phobia of department stores? Emporiaphobia?). That would have meant my loss, since former Macy's Fine Wine customers describe it as offering a big selection at very fair prices.
As you will see on the list of wines, in addtion to the Taster, Macy's apparently also had someone called "Marceau", who selected wine for a Macy's private label. 1964 Chablis Blanchot, anyone? Jamie Wolff
NB: these wines are in our warehouse and will be available for pick-up or delivery after Tuesday, July 20th.
