2019 is shaping up to be an extraordinary vintage in Germany, from both a quality and scarcity standpoint. The wines we've been fortunate enough to taste combine exquisite fruit, frank minerality and an airy, lifted character to the aromatics—what lovers of Riesling want. And Florian Lauer has delivered this in triumphant fashion. There's real grace and verve here, not to mention, tension and balance, even if quatities are tiny. For longtime fans of the estate, 2019 is a year to snap up what little wine that has reached our shelves for the table and the cellar. John McIlwain
Lauer, Peter 2019 Saar Ayler Kupp Riesling Fass 6 'Senior'
Lauer ‘Senior’ is Florian’s nod to making a style of wine his grandfather (Peter Lauer Sr.) would enjoy. His aim is to make a feinherb, weeknight wine from 70-year-old, ungrafted vines on the Kupp. In 2019 'Senior' is crackling with energy. The nose is redolent of white flowers, pear skin, stone fruit and cool crushed herbs. The palate is just off-dry, bursting with ripe stone fruit and savory herbal flavors and culminating in a surprisingly punchy, tangy, lingering finish. The tension between ripeness and bracing acidity is compelling and each sip begets the next. A fabulous 'Senior' that displays the vibrancy of the 2019 vintage. John McIlwain
Lauer, Peter 2019 Saar Ayler Kupp Riesling Trock Fass 2 'Extra Dry'
Acid freaks rejoice! Lauer's Fass 2 Trocken 'Extry Dry' bottling, sourced from the Ayler Kupp, is just the thing for lovers of stony, detailed, bone-dry, trocken Riesling. The nose is tightly wound and circumspect upon opening, a quick decant reveals aromas of underripe peach, bruised herbs, spice, and wet rock. The palate is savory and intensely mineral, offering far more stone than fruit on the attack giving way to zangy salted lime zest and green apple flavors on an intense and palate-coating finish. This was a fine companion for smoked salmon with cucumbers and a lemon dill vinaigrette, though I'd wager this would benefit with a couple more years in the bottle and then shine with grilled mackerel or sardines or lemon chicken with herbed couscous. Lauer, Peter 2019 Saar Ayler Kupp Riesling Unterstenberg Fass 12
Covered in eroded gray slate, the south-southwest facing Unterstenberg lieu dit is the site on the Ayler Kupp that has some of the most water retention due to its location at the foot of the hillside. Fermented to just off-dry in 2019.
Lauer, Peter 2019 Saar Ayler Kupp Riesling Stirn 3L
Southwest facing Fass 15, Stirn (forehead), comes from near the top of the Ayler Kupp where the hill curves around. The cooler, windier microclimate and meager soils allow for a later harvest, with the resulting wine offering more fruit and generosity.
Lauer, Peter 2019 Saar Riesling Kupp Fass 18 GG
The grapes for this GG come from the mid-slope of Ayler Kupp, exposure and soils make for a long-lived and complex grand cru Riesling.
